Walking Around Gadong District in Brunei / The Empire Hotel [Fringes of Southeast Asia, Ep. 3]
Hello, guys! This is Jeff from “The Greatest Journey”. My agenda for today is strolling the area around the Centrepoint Hotel here in the Gadong commercial district in Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei. It’s going to take some walking and some shopping and some eating.
In the late afternoon, I’m going to join a tour option to visit the iconic Empire Hotel, the most luxurious hotel in Brunei. Join me. In the same building as the Centrepoint Hotel is a branch of Jollibee. Jollibee is the most popular
Fast food chain in Brunei with around 15 branches compared to only five branches for McDonald’s. And there there must be many Filipinos in Brunei because I found a Filipino restaurant nearby, and it features the halo- halo. Two highly recommended restaurants are opposite each other: Restoran Yishun which is famous for its kolo mee…
…and Tasty Flavour Restaurant (味真香), which is famous for its kuay chap. Also in the same building as our hotel is a branch of of Jaya Hypermarket. Just look at the selection of instant noodles, and these are flavors we hardly find in Taiwan or in the Philippines.
Our guide highly recommends that we buy this brand of shrimp crackers. On the second floor is a department store. The department store allows me to exit right into the Hotel Centrepoint. Of course the most recommended restaurant on TripAdvisor and the blogs is the Thien Thien Restaurant, which features the chicken rice.
I can still see the McDonald’s sign, so I know that our hotel is very near “The Mall”, … …one of the biggest if not the biggest shopping mall in Brunei, albeit stuck in the ’90s, according to the local guide.
I like the mall and I do not agree that it is stuck in the ’90s. I find a very cute shop that reminds me of Miniso and Daiso, and, according to the sales staff, it is a Brunei brand but with Japanese elements. The Mall is actually attached to the Rizqun Hotel.
The reason I am at Jollibee is because I want to try the Jolly Spaghetti, which is made with chicken meat instead of pork.
Hi! This is Jeff. Welcome to my channel, “The Greatest Journey”. My 101st journey takes me to Brunei Darussalam, one of the last Southeast Asian nations I am visiting. It is not a popular destination so I want to find out why. Brunei is the 66th country I am visiting.
This episode features my exploration of Gadong commercial district in Bandar Seri Begawan and a visit to The Empire Brunei, the most luxurious hotel in the country.
