  1. The area around Checkpoint Charlie and where you walked to the Brandenburg Tor is the most changed. I recall being on the eastern side amongst buildings still with bullet scars. I went into a basement cafe and there was a refrigerated display with no food in it. Concerned that there was no food, when asked what I wanted I said whatever the local ate. I was brought a steak that literally filled the plate with two fried eggs and chips piled on top of the steak. I am sure that this was for the benefit of the decadent westerner. But it did prove the point that we should not jump to conclusions based on how things are in our own country.
One had to change DM to OM at a rate of 1 to 1. I think it was 5 or maybe 25 per day. But it was impossible to spend that much (although west Germans would buy duty free at those UBahn stations in the east but closed to passengers). Despite this on one of my last visits to the East a man with long hair looking like John Lennon (unheard of a few years earlier) wanted to change money with me in a park.
So I would buy very cheap books by Marx and Lenin. Outside the bookshop there was a long queue, but the shop empty. The system was that you were only allowed in with a basket and the number of baskets were restricted.
Coming back through Checkpoint Charlie my package was x-rayed and they became excited that it contained books. I explained what the books were and explained that they were free to open the package and inspect them. But for some reason this was above their pay grade, so we proceeded to debate for some 20 mins before I was allowed to pass.
Right in front of the Brandenburg Tor there was the wall, right by where Kennedy had made his Ich Bin Ein Berliner speech, there was a cryptic piece of political graffiti. It said STFC (Shrewsbury Town Football Club), of course it may have been Swansea (then a town) or Swindon, but it was in blue so one assumes it was Shrewsbury.

  2. I remember getting my pic taken at checkpoint Charlie seven years ago. felt a little odd with Mcdonald's right there in the background. Are the Yanks Making some sort of point? lol Great vid guys brought back memories Thanks.

  3. Interesting vlog. A lot of history. I remember watching the wall come down on tv. I recall a concert being held I think around the same time.
