Ep 36: Farewell and A New Beginning

hello it’s early May and I’m in kma Turkey in this video I’m saying goodbye to my sailing yard jumbo she sank last year in October in the South Atlantic after a fantastic cruise from New York to the azors from the azors to Fernando de norona in Brazil actually I was on my last leg from Brazil to Cape Town in South Africa one morning there was a big bang and water came into the boat she sank very fast obviously I made it via the life raft spent 20 hours there was then picked up by a freight ship and they cruised towards South Africa so actually I ended up in in Cape Town but obviously not the way I wanted it in this video I’m not showing any pictures of a sinking sailing yard yes a few out of the live raft it’s more about doing a review because we sailed more than 40,000 natic miles with jumbo and had fantastic times but actually I’m on the new boat and I’m a mango which we bought here in Turkey a few weeks ago and obviously I’m showing some pictures of the new boat as well but before we do that we are jumping back in time to Fernando deonia where Heath the anchor and started sailing towards Cape Town now I’m getting started heing the anchor and starting to sail towards Cape Town bye-bye Fernando the sailes are set and selling into the first night I’m on my way to Cape Town I’ve left Fernando Deon about uh 3 days ago and I’ve done roughly 330 natic miles so far I’m selling South here at the moment in the trade wind coming from Southeast but it has turned already to to East which is very interesting that sailing cruise from Cana to Cape Town is about 4 and 12,000 maybe 4,800 nautic miles or if it is really going very bad then it might even be 5,000 natic miles so it depends a little bit obviously I can’t sail directly because there’s trade wind in between so it is slightly turning at the moment as I said very interesting because there’s a low in the South and that is influencing the trade wind zone so the wind is already on on East giving me a good CA at the moment so I’m telling South House East yeah it will be a very interesting cruise and yeah we will see [Music] so what a jumbo is sinking so it was a very strong noise and then I realized that water is coming out of the floor and then I switched on obviously the buge pump but then secondly the electrical pump which I had but it was not enough just want to install the second one but uh it’s too much water so I’m now here in the life raft and uh yeah hope that somebody gets me so from one moment to another I changed from a fantastic sailing Cruise great experience yes challenging but great fun I really enjoyed that I changed from that to the life raft where my life was really under danger I spent 20 hours in the life raft it could have ended differently obviously yeah I’m sitting here and I made it after 20 hours during the night was bitterly cold the body temperature dropped significantly so we are not covering that situation here in this video for those who want to get more information I would suggest you watch the live stream we did early in December and we answered most questions and uh we were a little bit closer to the event so I think was well explained there so yeah click click on that uh link which is in the video description and you’ll find that information there actually as as I say Jambu and I S more than 40,000 a miles together I bought her in 2013 she was in ch at that time 4 years old well maintained nice boat in the beginning we sailed a lot in the Netherlands on the Isel mayare but after a few years we want to see more and uh sail to the Baltic Sea that year the weather was not that good and then I figured out where can I get with my limited vacation days and the next year we crossed bisc Bay and I sailed to north of Spain fantastic time there and then back and afterwards I did my first refit I installed a b& navigation system which was really great good system afterwards I sailed to the Canary Islands predominantly single-handed but not all times we saw fins many times around the boat then very special we saw a whale jumping out of the water during the cruise from Lisbon to Madera Claus was with me on board he could film that and then around the Canary Islands so we had great fun really enjoyed that then I started my first Atlantic Crossing towards the Caribbean Sea it was good great experience and then we had a good time in the Caribbean until Co caught up Corona times there so we’re in a lockdown and afterwards I had to sail non-stop from Martinique back to Germany to heland because marinas were close countries close the borders but that was a great Cruise my my longest one at that time more than 5,000 atic miles in 6 weeks was good after afterwards I did another refit and we crossed the Atlantic again had again a good time in the Caribbean SE then I had the first setback the mass broke on the sailing cruise from Martinique to the azors I could make it on engine to Su and got the M fixed on martinque afterwards we had some nice months again in the Caribbean really enjoyed that and last year we had the great experience cruising the east coast of the United States from Florida to New York with the absolute highlight sailing up the Hudson River towards Manhattan and passing the Statue of Liberty we had so many nice years I sailed a lot we saw so many islands new countries fantastic times when you have an accident like that your ship is sinking in the middle of the ocean far away from the the coast you just make it by the life raft as I say the end could have been different you think about your own future what do I want to do do I really want to sail again do I want to be on the water again or maybe even Crossing oceans and very soon I decided yes I want that I’m addicted to Sea I’m addicted to sailing so yes I need that despite of the risk however not with a light boat which I had before I want a more robust ship I mean this is a male mango we talk about the the details a little bit later so when I was looking for a boat I wanted a skang Rudder first because that was the main reason that jumbo sunk the Collision under water in the rudder area uh maybe ripped it off and the water came out of that area so skung Rudder more robust larger because it uh was one of the downsides with jumbo she was rather small and when we had visitors on board it was a little bit too tight so we wanted more spacious and so those are where the criterias yes the material the H material I kept it open could have been aluminium steel or fiberglass at the end we ended up here with a fiberglass b as well but built at the end of the 80s so far more stable they put more material on it is very robust 17 tons here on board so those were the criterias and uh we started looking for a boat um on the other hand I didn’t want to decide on myself because I wanted that anle loves the boat or feels well on the boat as well as I do and during that process we found the amels very nice and then we saw the was mango in huier in in France in south of France and really I I like this type of ship and there was focusing on on ML mangoes and Ana likes this type of ship as well so we both think that is a type of boat we want to sail with and now I think we have a little look I show you the first pictures here of our new boat AEL mango we named her comeback course I think it’s a it’s a good name first of all it will be my comeback at Sea with her and on the other hand it has a double meaning comeb back so we wish that our comeback always comes back let’s have a look this is a Helm nice seat here good area yeah it’s a view towards the bow here shot plotter from Raymarine Ren new it’s also Raymarine but the system is mixed with an older BNG this is a the control panel for the sails electrically operated so the generator Fs in and out electrically and the main sail goes in and out electrically as well this is the electrical anchor Wich this one is a bow thrust here’s a control panel for the engine this is engine as well yeah very spacious cockpit you can lay yourself here on on that bench and here as well 2 m long what I really love here on this boat is a hot Tob here the roof which gives protection obviously against the Sun and we are cruising predominantly in Sunny areas but it also protects against rain and whilst we are here we’re having a look in the engine compartment I had to remove the table the cockpit table for that here it is access to the engine compartment here from inside it’s really spacious and very clean obviously I can here with a with a white shirt this one is our engine a Perkins 80 horsepowers and this here at the back red unit is a generator with saiki uh really likes this place let’s close this one and Ana is coming there oops Yeah I’m so happy with our new boat and this is my favorite place here our sunbed and I’m very excited for the future with our new boat and I’m obviously excited as well and now we have a look downstairs it’s going downstairs and here on the left side we have the first gauges this one is fuel diesel port side tank starboard tank this is a bill pump alarm generator the Wester baky 616 hours at the moment this is a SE fresh water maker which is not working at the moment I don’t think I will put it back in operation I need to think about what I’m doing but we have a large water tank here so we can see here the maximum is 1,500 l or 400 gallons so at the moment we at 1,400 l so the water maker is not the highest priority at the moment here I can switch on the inverter 4,000 w 220 volt and here that is a uh victron energy monitor for the 600 a hours lithium batteries so at the moment they’re loaded 55.7% so this is automatic bu pump so we have a Dr water tank here and yeah let’s move further down this this is a salon we’ve just renewed the upholstery here I think it’s looking very nice yeah television screen I never wanted one but it’s coming with the boat and I’m using it because it’s quite helpful when I’m cutting the videos and checking the sound here’s a gy so normal fridge here need to pull that down and open this way yeah that’s quite nice and here are some instruments so we see the voltage here 220 volts on board yeah not much power consumption at the moment here can change between generator Shore power and inverter obviously we are on three here we are on the inverter so AC that’s the air conditioning unit that is sitting here uh as I say it’s a water make it doesn’t run and the oven is here that’s oven and microwave and this one here is for the cooking field sanfield here from Bosch for Fields this one is the air fryer coffee machine yeah quite quite spacious here and here is a storage it goes quite deep down there so we are very happy with our gy so that’s the shot table here uh a little bit nostalgic here a VHF but we have other one in the cockpit and here is some space where I might put some devices in I will see yeah let’s uh move to the bow so here yeah maybe this one is interesting as well so this door can be a a water proof shot so we are some bars which were screwed in here and there and we see the ceiling at this side here this is the ceiling and then this area here the front area can be completely separated from the rest of the ship so in case there’s a leakage here you can continue your journey so two people can sleep here this one is a b Thruster yeah picture we know what we want to put in there but it’s not in yet and this one here can be extended with this upward three and the sleeping area is extended this is one of the leeboards so when we are sailing in the Yaki ceiling people can sleep safe here obviously there’s a middle piece which is missing here and the other board is coming in here so let’s move to the to the head or let’s have a look here behind that door it’s another cupboard yeah good space so if someone is visiting us the bag can be stored here jackets over over here a lot of space here on board so here’s a head which we slightly improved so we put the electrical toilet in a sunny Marine 31 so the thing was missing and uh also here this one here for the cosmetics and we put that in there’s not a huge refit need here on board it’s uh well equipped but a few things need to be done so maybe we do the walls in Fall so we might paint set we need to see but it’s no it’s nice and functional [Music] let’s move our Stern now here the bread baking machine already parked is a washing machine 9 kg which is a nice tool and here we go to the Cabinet St through here we are getting to the owner’s cabin but here’s a bunk as well I really like it it’s a little bit low here but when I saw the mango in here first time I really like it it gives This Bat a certain character I really like it to go through here and here someone can sleep during sailing so we put that here up and uh then you are protected this a Lebo here the starboard fuel tank is beneath here this is the ex is to the engine compartment yeah here the owner’s cabin double bed lot of space to put the closes in here’s a makeup table for the ladies and here’s same as it’s a bow here’s our hat we put the new electrical toilet in as well Sunny Marine 31 and I install this little cupboard so we can remove this one and then there’s space down there as well back in the cockpit here’s the electr hydraulic gangway so I put it up yeah you can see [Music] it so here’s the suned area Uncle really likes it here has the strong davits and this is our dingy High field Hy palon 2.6 M Tohatsu Outboard 9.8 horsepowers uh zero hours actually or half an hour now we tried it yesterday and lots of solar here 1190 watt Peaks tling dishes installed as well so someone puts this post up here are the other solar panels the m m sail is filled in it’s the main Mast you can see the electrical motors for the furing system here and also here moving this one here out and in where is this roll we have a self teing fog which is here that is operated manually so and here it can take from one side to the other and the genu and that is filled in and out electrically I think we are well equipped here on board with the sails also I like the catch so two mass and also the self-taking fog I think we get a good angle to the apparent wind when we have to beat the wind because the line is running much closer to the Mast yeah I feel very comfortable here on board of our comeback I like the model the ml mango the ships type and the previous owners ingred and Ellen equipped her very well and so we have only little things to do H absolutely only a small refit I mean when you taking over a boat or a yach you always have to do something so but it’s really not much they did a great job and we are really thankful for that we are now closing the chapter of sailing y jumbo and open up a new chapter with our comeback the name of the YouTube channel remains M jumbo we both are really looking forward to everything which is ahead of us and you can join us in the videos see you bye [Music] [Music]

In this video it’s time to say goodbye to Jambo. I sailed with her more than 40,000 nm and we experienced a lot. But we are already looking ahead again and have a new boat, an Amel Mango. Her name is Comeback and of course we show the first pictures from on board.

Enjoy the video!

  1. Sorry for your loss, my friend. Just glad to hear that your safe. Congrads on the new boat. I look forward to see your new adventures. Or as Martin would say "We will see". Cheers.

  2. You opted for a livaboard, that could have anything your home is required to have ! "Come Back" seemed to be an high-end boat at her date of construction, built by a sailor for sailors. Full-skeg. three watertight compartments and even a spare sail (😂) after all of your experiences feels, as if you did the right decission.A more modern version of an Amel, and thus far more expensive, would be a Kraken yacht.

  3. Congratulations Mate! Well done. I’m happy for you given the scary situation you went through in the south Atlantic.Fair winds to your new venture.👍

  4. So glad they picked you up. My gosh that must have been a very stressful day for you. Welcome back and congrats on new boat and new adventures to come.

  5. We had great fun watching your videos with Jambo, I started watching before the pandemic starts, and I loved each video, now I'm curious to see the new adventures… safe winds!!

  6. Hey, had been hoping you would post. I’m glad you were ok. Congratulations on the new boat. Hope you keep posting and sharing your sails.

  7. Congrats on the new boat Martin, she looks very well maintained. I was only thinking about how daring you were to take a production cruiser with a fin rudder on such long ocean passages, well I can see that a lesson was learned.
I wonder if you had been in a twin rudder boat would the impact have lessened and less catastrophic.
    Looking forward to more videos.

  8. Nice video Martin… I'm glad you're safe, and that you're both happy with the new boat. It's a good choice, to go for a solid blue-water boat.
I'm lookking forward to following your adventures.
