Rethymno was a fortress during the Venetian period in the late Middle Ages when it was called Retimo. The distance from Heraklion to Rethymno is 80 km, and from Chania to Rethymno – 56 km. Chania airport is much smaller and much less busy than Heraklion airport. Rethymno is connected to the larger cities of Chania and Heraklion by the “New Highway” that runs along the northern coast of Crete. We used the parking in the old town, it’s located north of the lighthouse for € 2 / hour.
