Tokyo Travel Guide: Is Shinjuku Overrated? Travel Tokyo Japan
today we’re diving into the heart of Tokyo Shinjuku as someone who’s explored it briefly I’m here to answer the burning question is Shinjuku actually worth it as your base in Tokyo join me as I share my personal experiences and insights to help you decide whether Shinjuku should be your go-to base when holidaying in Tokyo let’s uncover the hidden gems and practicalities of staying in Shinjuku and whether it truly lives up to its reputation as the must goto place in Tokyo so as part of my research into coming to Japan everywhere seemed to recommend staying in Shinjuku and there’s a lot of reasons why you should and the big one that came out on YouTube was convenience Shinjuku really is a well-located hub the station is probably the busiest and biggest and certainly most confusing one I’ve ever been in and it’s well connected and you’ve also got access to buses trains taxis everything there but you don’t actually catch the shin caner from there just so you’re aware there’s a variety of accommodation options yes there are loads of hotels in Shinjuku when we were planning we thought they seemed quite expensive for what they were and we had the added um the added issue of trying to find a twin room which isn’t that common in Japan or certainly not in Tokyo and you got to be really careful cuz a lot of rooms they describe as twins are actually just a big double so yep the hotels are definitely plentiful and some of the best hotels in Tokyo are actually in Shinjuku it’s a Shoppers Paradise there’s no getting away from it it’s got everything but so of most City centers and bear in mind Tokyo has lots of City centers you know because it’s such a big place you know a population of 39 million it’s n on the size of England all in a very small area so there’s you know you go to London that’s broken up into lots of villages and towns in a way ask yourself would you want to stay on Oxford Street and the other thing that’s often quoted is the night life and divers dining options yep no getting away from it there’s some cracking restaurants there we weren’t able to get a seat in any of them but that’s another story not to mention some of the attractions there there’s the Shinjuku Goen National Garden it’s beautiful we didn’t managed to get there but I’ve seen the footage and it looks yeah it looks amazing Japanese and English Japanese English and French style Gardens beautiful place to go um but do you go to Tokyo to go to basically a glorified Park some of you might but maybe it’s cuz I live on angle SE I’ve got a natural park I’ve got snowdonia National Park which funny enough is about the same size as Tokyo so I’m probably not as wowed by Gardens and Greenery as a lot of people I do admire the structured amazingly sculpted Gardens that they managed to achieve in Japan of course there’s the golden guy the street with all the bars and his zayas and they are tiny there’s no getting away from it they’re beautiful but lawful lot of them have um a minimum price especially For Tourists so you’ve got to sort of either spend a certain amount or just pay a service charge or whatever else but yeah I definitely recommend taking in one of them and just having a drink it’s not like going into a British pub where people will talk to you it’s sort of everyone sits there they drink they leave it has a function it’s not a tourist attraction it’s something that tourists want to do but I wouldn’t describe it as an attraction in fact the only place we went in specifically for a drink wasn’t in shinuk it was bar looping in Ginza purely because of books bungo stray dogs fetish of course right in the middle of Shinjuku is kabucho which is it’s supposed to be a red light district and yes there’s lots of hostess bars but it’s not a red light district as you would expect in Japan or dare I mention it Bangkok but it is associated with that trade they say it’s the probably the most likely place in Tokyo to get ripped off Street crime isn’t a big thing and muggings aren’t huge but getting attracted to coming to a bar and losing all your money when you’re there is most likely to happen there but that’s the same the worldwide and there’s a samurai Museum there as well which is supposed to be great Again by the time I finish this series of videos people are going to ask did you actually go to Tokyo cuz there’s a lot of things we didn’t do or was I lining up a reason to go back you’ve also got Aidy a mid yokoo otherwise known as piss s more bars and isaki again it’s worth walking down the Robot Restaurant now a lot of a lot of people have divided on this because some say it’s a tacky tourist trap some say wow it’s amazing and again not something we did because it was something that’s so popular you’ve got to book it now I resolved before going that yes we did pre-book some attractions however I wasn’t going to have every day booked up I nearly did and then book Tau me out of it need you do need some downtime when you’re in Tokyo there’s a Korean town just down the road which is certainly worth a look and there’s a massive VR Zone in Shinjuku for me I was I was blown away by going into the T game station purely because it had games from my era you know Space Invaders that sort of thing um I’m not a gamer anymore and Tokyo Opera city which is a cultural Hub so let’s have a quick brief through what we a brief walk through what we actually did while we were there so we got to Shinjuku after our day in Kamakura where Booker got a bit tired at least they were able to recharge a bit on the train as you can see it’s really busy there’s all the side streets and kabucho and we just wandered around and just got a feel for the place I’ll be honest it’s really really crowded however if that floats your boat that floats your boat I’m quite glad we didn’t stay there but I’m quite glad we went and there was just so much to see book had her Teddy with her and then we w walked up to the hotel gracery to see Godzilla Japan is obsessed with Godzilla Godzilla we we weren’t able to go up that day because you have to book for that as well I saw the T game station which was a trip down memory lane for me and my early gaming days and then it was getting dark and we went looking for the um 3D cap billboard unbeknown to us we walked under it a couple of times while we were looking but as you can see it really comes bright neon it it typifies neon Japan of course book found a Capal G chapons see what we get I think I got I think I got this one you got this one is it’ll take a second to open say yay I got the little strawberry guy good girl I don’t know are you happy yes very cute I don’t get what all the fuss is about them but the kids love them so we went off looking for the 3D cap billboard I’ll be honest I was actually slightly disappointed because I expected it to run nonstop but of course it’s there to run adverts instead and it was time to find something to eat we couldn’t get a table anywhere so we ended up sorry we we’re done to drau R sushi tonight in Shinjuku but we got there and the wait time was 90 minutes note to self book ahead so we said we weren’t going to do Burgers while we were here but we tried found something called Moss burger and what’s this drink called oong oong I tea which is okay and we’re having shrimp burgers with fries so we’ll see how that goes at least it’s not McDonald’s this is what a mosburger looks like fries and a shrimp cut really forward to this for or has it just gotten really hungry so what did we think of Shinjuku well we’re glad we went and we did go through it a couple more times we went there uh we went through it on a go-kart which you’ll show you in a later episode um and we also went there to catch a a coach to Mount Fuji um on reflection I wish we’d given it a bit more of a whirl but there’s just so much to see in Tokyo it’s un un believable and I’m I’m glad we didn’t stay there I think it was too chaotic um where did we stay well we stayed in roag Goku which is really close to a zaa where you’ve got Seno G you’re close to the river and the hotel we stayed in the dichi has got a train station next door and we didn’t find getting around any trickier than you would have done from Shinjuku however we were able to walk to AAA in the evening um there’s some great restaurants in rag Goku and we were the right side of Tokyo for going to Disney sea and to ad daa um we were still walking distance from akih Habra just and walking distance from Central Tokyo not that we did a lot of walking cuz the Network’s brilliant so for my liking I personally would not stay in Shinjuku I’d consider Ginza cuz it’s close enough to everything and it’s a a little bit it’s a little bit quieter but there’s still plenty going on but if you’re looking for night life every single night Shinjuku is probably your place however there’s night life in every part of Tokyo um and if you do want to go to Shinjuku for a few nights of karaoke you can get transport back to whatever area staying in I think next time we go we probably still wouldn’t stay in Shinjuku we’d head out towards the aak away or depending if we’re going to other places in Japan we might stay the same side of Tokyo as where we’re planning on going next for example stay to the West if you want to go to oaka stay to the north if you want to head up north stay to the South if you want to go sou not rocket science um so yeah why don’t you make a comment below as to say why you think we’re wrong or let us know how we’re doing this is my first time making a Travel Channel and my first time I’ve been to Tokyo I’m not an expert I’m just giving you honest Reflections on what I saw while I was there we enjoyed it definitely going to go back but there’s so much more of the world to see happy with that [Music] [Music]

Tokyo Travel Guide: Is Shinjuku Overrated? Travel Tokyo Japan
We recently visited Tokyo and decided to stay near Shinjuku instead of in the bustling district itself.
And let me tell you, we loved it!
While Shinjuku is great for shopping, dining, and nightlife, staying nearby allowed us to experience a quieter side of Tokyo.
We were still just a short train ride away from all the action, but we also got to explore charming neighborhoods and local markets that most tourists miss.
Plus, our accommodation was more affordable and spacious compared to what we would have found in Shinjuku.
So, if you’re looking for a balance of convenience and tranquility, consider staying near Shinjuku on your next trip to Tokyo.

Have you been to Tokyo ? Where did you stay ?
Interesting video. I have to point out though that the legendary game developer, creator of Space Invaders and Arkanoid among others is pronounced "Tie-Toh" not this way… https://youtu.be/ihMMw0rnKz4?si=frhkMq1IU96JVAR- π
Keep it up though. Liking the blogs.
This was helpful. I am travelling in June and staying in Minato first for 5 days, then Shinjuku when I return to Tokyo for 3 days. I hope I decided ok!
For a first trip, and you're not using the Shinkansen too much, sure, Shinjuku is a good choice.
If you're doing many Shinkansen trips out of Tokyo, closer to Shinagawa or Tokyo stations are a better choice. Narita Express also stops at these stations.
MOS BURGER!!!!!! I'm sooooo jealous. Next time try the fried chicken. I often think about it. I miss it.
I am staying in Ueno myself for my trip during late may to mid June. I can walk to a lot of nearby attractions I plan to go to and the station is right there for me to get to places like Shibuya or Ikenukuro, and return to Narita airport for departure with ease. Very much looking forward to my trip but the reservations part definitely will throw me for a loop, for the most part I plan to just explore and try places and see if I can get a seat.
