The death toll from Typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam has increased to 59 people, with hundreds injured. 44 of them died as a result of landslides, the Ministry of Agriculture and Development said.

Yagi, the strongest Category 5 hurricane to hit Southeast Asia this year, has weakened to a tropical depression on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. However, authorities warn that the risk of floods and landslides remains.

Over the weekend, a typhoon with wind speeds of up to 223 km/h hit the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, and is now moving westward. In Hanoi, it ripped roofs off houses and uprooted trees, causing power outages across the region.

Car drivers deliberately slowed down to protect people on scooters from the wind.

On Monday morning, a bridge collapsed in Phu Tho province, causing ten cars and two scooters to fall into the Hong Ha River, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister said.

In Cao Bang province, a bus carrying 20 passengers was swept into a river.

At least 87 fishing boats sank off the coast of Vietnam as a result of the storm. Rescuers found 41 people in the open sea.

In the port city of Haiphong, where many international factories are located, the water level in the streets of some areas reached one and a half meters. Power lines and utility poles were damaged. Metal roof sheets and billboards were scattered throughout the city.

Four airports in northern Vietnam suspended operations over the weekend.

Almost 50 thousand people were evacuated from coastal cities. Authorities urged remaining residents not to leave their homes.
