Vauban’s Saar Fortress, Saarlouis-Germany||Highlight Walk Tour @SofiaEurasien #highlights #autumn

    Saarlouis Fortress

    The former fortress with its hexagonal floor plan still characterises the cityscape of Saarlouis today. It was built from 1680 onwards by order of Louis XIV according to the designs of Thomas de Choisy and the famous master builder Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban to secure the occupied Lorraine territories.

    Several facilities remain of the former imposing fortress, but they date back to the 19th century. It was built by the Prussians after the withdrawal of the French. From 1887 onwards, large parts of the structure were demolished, but there are still ramparts and ditches in the north of the inner city area that once belonged to the complex.

    The ramparts now serve gastronomic purposes under the name of casemates, while the water-filled ditches have been incorporated into the city’s green spaces. On Vauban Island, which belongs to Saarlouis, visitors can still find the monuments of the famous Marshal Ney and the soldier.
