Turkish Girl Invites Me To Her City (Antalya) 🇹🇷

I visited the Turkish seaside town of Antalya, where my Turkish friend invited me to attend her cousin’s wedding.

I travelled there from Istanbul, and in an effort to avoid getting stuck in one of the traffic jams that the city is notorious for, I went to the airport via public transport.

There’s a good metro system in Istanbul, and one of the lines goes directly to the main airport. Each ride only costs around 20 lira ($0.60 USD) and I was able to get from Istanbul’s old town to airport using two rides.

I was travelling to Antalya by Turkish Airlines in business class and planned to get a nice breakfast in their airport lounge. What little they had on offer was extremely disappointing to me, and I ended up leaving and using a third party lounge instead.

The iGA lounge had a lot of good Turkish meat dishes, salads and desserts. It was a much better experience than the Turkish lounge. I accessed it with the Dragon Pass that I get free with my credit card, and they also accept Lounge Key and Priority Pass.

There was more disappointment when I boarded my flight and saw that the business class seats were actually just economy class seats, with the middle seat blocked out. This is the same trick that a lot of European airlines such as British Airways do. You can’t help but feel ripped off when you pay for a business class ticket and that’s the seat you get.

At least the in-flight meal was pretty decent. Turkish Airlines are known for having good food in business class.

At Antalya airport there’s no way to get to the city centre cheaply, other than the number 600 bus, which only departs every 2 hours. Since it was 90 minutes until the next departure I just took a taxi.

I tried to confirm if they’d be taking me by the meter, and they tried to say it was a fixed price of 700 lira, but they ended up taking me by meter when I insisted and it was much cheaper than that.

I checked in to my hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton, in Antalya city centre and was given an upgraded room. I’ve stayed at this hotel before and I really like the gym, as it’s much better equipped than most hotel gyms. The only downside is that they sell memberships for the gym to the general public, so there’s a lot of non hotel guests using up the equipment at any given time. In regular hotel gyms I tend to get the whole gym to myself most of the time.

After building up an appetite in the gym, I went out with my local friend Yağmur to a restaurant in Konyaaltı. Konyaalti is a tourist area next to the sea, and so there’s a lot of food options open late or even 24 hours.

The restaurant we visited, Ciğerci Bahattin, specialises in liver, but the first thing we tried was şırdan. Shirdan is a sheep’s stomach filled with rice and has a very funny shape.

I did try the liver kebabs, even though liver isn’t my most favourite food in the world. This one tasted meaty and combined with all the bread and salad dishes that was delivered to our table for free, was very tasty.

We headed off to a dessert shop to eat some tasty Turkish katmer, which is a sweet dish I’ve never tried before. It tastes like kunefe but much less sweet, and I definitely prefer it over the kunefe.
