3 Reasons Americans Are Moving Overseas for Retirement

If you live in the US and are retiring soon, here’s 3 reasons why you should consider retiring abroad:
    1. Lower cost of living: Depending on how much you’ve saved, studies show that the average retiree’s savings last them 3-5 years after retiring in the US. But if you retire abroad, depending on where you choose, your retirement savings can last you a 10 years or more because of a lower cost of living

    2. Affordable (or even free!) healthcare that rivals the U.S.: Most retirees spend an average of $165,000 on healthcare in the US during retirement. But when you move abroad, you have more options for affordable (or even free) healthcare with the same services and care you’d receive in the US.

    3. Exciting new cultures, social circles, and endless travel opportunities.: Retiring abroad gives you tons of options to meet new people, discover new cultures, and efficiently to travel to new destinations And my company, Traveling with Kristin, can actually help you build your entire living overseas plan in the next 3 to 12 months without having to figure it out on your own.

    1. We boomers grew up brainwashed that the 🇺🇸 was Eden…I don't know anyone who thought otherwise, let alone consider moving away for retirement or sooner. Trump has destroyed that dream profile….yep…I'll say it. We're to old to qualify for health insurance or too limited by physical issues. We're stuck…even 10 years ago would have made a difference…but 🇺🇸 was still human and respected. Fair warning to future gens…max your options…you never know what will happen.

    2. I have not seen one of your videos for some time. They've not come up in my feed even though I am subscribed. I am pleased to see this new video and that your business is doing well. I've always found your videos very balanced and you come across as sincerely wanting to help others. This video's title has the word "American" in it which is of course your major market although one of your examples is a Canadian. I would suggest, as a Canadian, that you create titles that would not stop people from viewing your video. I came to it as I am subscribed. However I can see other Canadians or folks in other countries avoiding it due to the title. Not because people are anti-American, which they could easily be in this Trump trade war, but because if it is aimed at Americans then people might think that you'll be addressing things, like Medicaid, that doesn't apply to them. However if it were titles something like " Three Reasons for Moving Overseas for Retirement" then you might lure non-Americans in. I will be honest that the idea of retiring elsewhere is exciting but I live in Nova Scotia so by the time I'm exhausted my interests here, moving elsewhere will not be in the cards. But I still love your videos.

    3. BTW I went to your link for your application as I was curious what it might look like and my virus checker gave me this warning "Malicious code was detected on this website, so we blocked it for your protection. Visiting this page may put your security at risk." You might want to double check that page to modify it as you might be losing many customers who go to the page but get this warning and then just close and never go back.

    4. I retired very comfortably last year at 62. I love living in Dallas with my kids and grandkids not too far away. Moving out of the country makes no sense for me.

    5. I would have considered retiring overseas, but my brother lives with me and he needs dialysis 3 times a week. He's covered here, but would not be overseas.

    6. I retired to Thailand in 2017 when I was 60 years old. There are legitimate reasons why many people can't or won't move abroad. My perspective as a retiree is that the US didn't really offer me anything special at this stage of my life. The US is a great place to get a good education, build a career, and make money. I've done all of that already. My life circumstances, travel experience, health status, savings, and pension income allowed me to pursue something new and exciting for my retirement life. Thailand was a good choice for me. I've lived here 8 years now. There is likely a good choice for you.

    7. One thing most of us have learned is that most empires go through and birth, growth, maturity, decline, and death. Anyone with any situational awareness knows that the USA pretty much served its purpose, i.e. to create about $20 trillion in military hardware. That being said, I just hope the exodus to places like Panama, Peru, Argentina, Philippines, Thailand, etc. doesn't force those nations to change their laws for citizenship. Frankly, I am worried that I might miss the window of opportnity.

    8. Hi Kristin..I've several years left before my retirement. I think..we'll both retire almost the same time 😅. I'll contact you then about my plan for sure. Now I just wanna explore countries and decide my suitable location with the help of Helena the Astronomer.! Thanks for this business video. And your look has very limited rivals on the internet.! So attractive.!

    9. Kristin what are good options if I don’t like humidity? I live in a dry climate in the U.S. it seems the cheaper countries are very humid. Plus, I have little grandkids, so I need to be able to come back regularly to see them.

    10. 45, I’m recently unemployed but have a $9,000 military pension and access to Tricare and VA healthcare. I’m planning to travel abroad using my savings, assets, and 401(k) after selling or renting my home. What are some of the best passive income options I could consider to support this lifestyle?

    11. Since Trump wants to gut one of my former employers, Voice of America, an early retirement overseas sounds like a good idea. Most people don't know the crap that I was exposed to during the Arab Spring in 2011 to 2013.

    12. All I can say is if you want to do so, do it soon after retirement and hopefully you are able to retire early. Waiting a few years means that you age will be catching up with you and you won’t be able to enjoy it plus health care is difficult or impossible to get in many countries especially once you are 65 and worse once you are 70.

    13. One word why I am retiring abroad in Jan 2026:. Trumpism. Many others too! a
And yet you don't want to touch the elephant in the room of explaining expat movements in the modern era. You are taking the way too pc soft way ($, health, culture). WAY SUBSERVIENT TO Trumpism by all accounts…. but you take the safe road. This is VERY UNLIKE the travel you encourage. What gives?

    14. Does your SsDi and Medicare come with you? Also, I’m on chronic pain for about 20 years. I’ve heard it’s difficult to get opiate pain relievers in some countries. Can you tell me how that works? since I’m on disability since I’m on disability, I know I can’t afford you, but is there a mini plan or a tiered system or just buying booklets instead of one on one help? I want to be there in about two years. I’m 57 and starting to panic.

    15. "Free Healthcare" so you move to a country where their citizens have been paying via tax's into the health system, then you come along and think you can get it for nothing at the detriment to others!!!!!!!

    16. You're very diplomatic, Kristin, but you have no choice in your business. I've followed many of your travel videos over the years and I'm pretty sure where your sentiments lie!

    17. I’ll believe it when I see it. Retiring abroad sounds dreamy, but without smart financial planning, it’s risky. Lucky I prioritized savings—many retirees struggle with pensions not stretching overseas. Policymakers should address this.

    18. I am a retired expat in Russia. I resettled there when there were nice relationships between two countries because I couldn’t survive within the US on my retirement paycheck. All of a sudden the notice appeared on the site of the Embassy that all Americans should leave Russia and then Social Security cut off my retirement benefits. I am too old to resettle again and I have no money for that. I can only go to the street begging in a foreign country. The government of a civilized country must not tell an elderly person, “We’ll cut off your retirement benefits unless you resettle to a different country”. I feel betrayed and defrauded. What kind of country is it, which doesn’t honor its obligations to the citizens abusing the most vulnerable class? I cannot even renew my expired passport because the Embassy in Moscow denies passport services. They sanction their own citizens who did nothing wrong. Evil country indeed. Trump promised to dismiss all Biden’s executive orders, but he still has done nothing about it. Indeed each following president has always been more evil than previous one. No wonder people in the world hate the US.
