Classic BSA motorcycles

Three classic BSA bikes at the Two Wheel Museum, including a 1947 B31 350cc bike and a 1954 650cc model.

The Two Wheels Museum (or Museu 2 Rodas) – is located in Sangalhos, which is about 50 minutes south from Porto. The museum is inside the Sangalhos Velodrome and has an interesting display of both bicycles and motorcycles.

In between the bicycles and motorcycles are the ‘cycle motors’. The earliest forms of motorcycles consisted of bicycle frames with engines attached. They were often referred to as ‘cycle motors’ and clearly demonstrated a link in the progression from bicycles to purpose-built motorcycles.

The display includes motorcycles from France, England and Germany, but the majority of the motorcycle display is dedicated to Portuguese brands and models. Whilst I was already familiar with some of these bikes, I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the country’s motorcycle industry. It seems that the industry initially imported bikes, but was soon producing its own vehicles, often using imported engines and components.
