Overlooking the Golden Horn (Halic) and set in the beautiful Istanbul neighbourhood of Balat, the world’s only iron-built Bulgarian Orthodox Church of Sveti Stefan welcomes visitors on a mystical journey thanks to its architectural marvels, and stands as a testament to Türkiye’s rich history of religious coexistence. The Sveti Stefan Church (Iron Church), which holds historical importance for Bulgarian Orthodox Christians, has been reopened for worship by 2018. The church in Istanbul is entirely made of iron, except for the gilded wooden parts on top. All the parts were cast in Vienna and assembled in the Golden Horn, Istanbul, Türkiye. When its counterparts in Argentina and Austria were destroyed over time, it remained as the only iron church in the world.

An international competition was held to produce the prefabricated cast iron parts of the church, which was won by an Austrian company, R. Ph. Waagner. The prefabricated elements weighing 500 tons were manufactured in Vienna between 1893 and 1896 and transported by ship via the Danube and the Black Sea to Istanbul. A year and a half later, the church was completed in 1898 and inaugurated by Exarch Joseph on September 8 of that year. The main skeleton of the church is made of steel and covered with metal sheets. All parts are connected with nuts, bolts, rivets or welds.

If you’re planning a visit, keep in mind it’s an active church, so respectful clothing and quiet behavior are essential. Afterwards, explore the charming Balat neighborhood, known for its colorful houses and antique shops – a perfect way to experience the rich cultural tapestry of Istanbul.
