Valletta Walking Tour 🇲🇹☀️ A Summer Day in Malta’s Iconic & Historic Capital! 4K HDR

Welcome to this walking tour of Valletta, The beautiful capital city of Malta, the jewel of the mediterranean sea. Today, I arrived on the stunning Resilient Lady cruise ship from Virgin Voyages you see here, and I’m thrilled to explore Valletta’s old town up close. This is my first time really getting to walk these historic streets, and I have to say, I didn’t expect it to be this beautiful! Every building here feels steeped in history. You can sense the stories of the past in each detail—it’s so inspiring to see in person. This is my second time in Malta, both times on a cruise stop. Our tour kicks off at the Upper Barrakka Gardens. If you’re arriving by cruise, you can reach this area quickly by taking the nearby elevator. It’s just 2 euros for a round trip and brings you right up from the cruise terminal. Definitely convenient and a beautiful way to start the day! The Saluting Battery, which we saw earlier, is a real highlight here. It fires daily salutes at noon and again at 4:00 PM. This historic battery played roles in past military events, including during World War II and the siege of 1798–1800. Fun fact—cruise ships can request a farewell cannon salute as they depart. I missed it today, but hopefully next time! Stay tuned because I’ll also capture the incredible sunset as we sail away from port. It’s a view you won’t want to miss! As we explore, you’ll notice Valletta’s unique blend of Baroque, Mannerist, and Neo-Classical architecture, which defines its historic look. This style emerged after the Great Siege of 1565, as the Knights of St. John rebuilt and expanded the city with stunning details. Valletta’s warm, golden tones come from globigerina limestone, a local stone that’s both beautiful and practical for intricate carvings. The stone’s softness allows for detailed facades and sculptures, adding to the distinct character of Valletta’s architecture. It’s mid-August, so the streets are bustling with tourists, and locals are also enjoying the holiday vibe—such an exciting time to be here. The streets are decked out with colorful decorations for the Feast of the Assumption, a major celebration known as “Santa Marija.” These bright banners, or “pavaljuni,” feature saints and religious symbols, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere throughout the city. The vibrant reds, blues, and greens of these decorations make Valletta feel like a festival town—such a great time to explore! This is a statue of Queen Victoria, a reminder of Malta’s years under British rule, which lasted over 150 years. Malta joined the British Empire in 1814, becoming a critical naval hub until its independence in 1964. The British influence is still noticeable. The mix of British and Maltese culture gives Valletta its unique character. It’s fascinating to see how they coexist in the city’s daily life. Now we’re at the Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a beautifully iconic church that holds deep meaning for the people of Malta. The church’s devotion to the Virgin Mary makes it a central site for worship, and its grand dome is a striking part of Valletta’s skyline. Its dome is visible from many points in the city, making it a landmark that visitors and locals alike recognize instantly. We’re now passing through Valletta’s City Gate, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano in 2014. It merges old and new seamlessly. This gate is both minimalistic and historic, symbolizing a modern gateway that honors Valletta’s ancient roots and history. And here is the Triton Fountain, symbolizing Malta’s strong connection to the sea with three mythical Tritons representing strength and resilience. As a beloved meeting spot, the fountain is a must-see. Located right at the entrance, it’s one of the city’s iconic sights that greets every visitor. As we return to the ship, I’ll show you one last treat—the sunset over Valletta’s port. It’s a breathtaking end to a perfect day. I hope you enjoyed our Valletta tour as much as I did.
