[Music] [Music] Levo is an extraordinary city that encompasses centuries of history, culture, and maritime spirit. Born as a small fishing village, this Tuscan pearl overlooking the terrinian sea experienced its period of greatest splendor under the Medici dynasty in the 16th century. Kosimo the first and subsequently Ferinando the first de Medici transformed Levoro into a free port attracting merchants from all over Europe and the Mediterranean. The enlightened vision of the Medici gave life to the Leonine laws of 1591 which guaranteed religious and commercial freedom to anyone who settled in the city. This climate of tolerance attracted communities of Jews, Armenians, Greeks, English, and Dutch, giving Levoro a cosmopolitan and multicultural character that persists to this day. During the 19th century, Levono became an important center of the ship building industry and a strategic point for maritime trade. The city suffered heavy bombing during World War II. but was able to be reborn while maintaining its indomitable spirit and maritime soul. Our journey begins with convenient parking at the Porter Amore Shopping Center, a strategic position that will allow us to explore the historic center of Levono entirely on foot. From here, we will set off to discover the wonders of this port city, immersing ourselves in its history, culture, and traditions. A few steps from the shopping center is the Levono Aquarium, a modern structure that houses over 2,000 specimens of 300 different species, mainly from the Mediterranean Sea. This scientific and educational center offers a fascinating journey to discover marine biodiversity with particular attention to local [Music] ecosystems. Continuing our journey, we reach one of Levono’s most iconic places, the Terratza Mascani. This extraordinary sea view, Belvadier, characterized by black and white checkered flooring with over 34,000 tiles, offers a spectacular view of the terrinian sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. [Music] Inaugurated in 1925 and dedicated to the famous Levorno composer Petro Mascani, the terrace extends for over 35,000 square meters and represents the favorite meeting place for Levono residents for romantic walks and moments of relaxation. The nearby roundabout with its art nouvo gazebo host summer concerts and cultural events. At sunset, this place transforms into a panoramic point of extraordinary beauty, where the sun seems to dive directly into the sea. An integral part of Levono’s identity is the relationship with the sea witnessed by the numerous historic bathing establishments. Among these, the Bagny Pankaldi stand out. Founded in 1846, the first modern bathing establishment in the city and among the oldest in Italy. Frequented in the past by illustrious figures such as Gabriel Danunio and members of the Italian royal family, the establishment represents a piece of history of seaside tourism and Levono social life. Our itinerary continues with a visit to Villa Mimbelli, an elegant 19th century residence immersed in the lush park that today houses the Giovanni Fati Civic Museum. The villa built in neocclassical style for the Mimi merchant family preserves the original furnishings and decorations intact offering a glimpse into the life of the Levorno upper bourgeoisi of the 19th century. The museum houses a precious collection of works by the Makayoli an artistic movement born in Tuscani with particular attention to the paintings of Giovanni Fattorii an illustrious Levorno painter. The canvases on display with their marine landscapes, scenes of daily life and portraits tell the story of 19th century Levono and its relationship with the sea and surrounding countryside. The 19th century villa surrounded by an English-style park of about 10 hectares was the residence of illustrious figures including the Powina Bonaparte family during her exile. The park with its treelined avenues, rare essences and small ornamental constructions represents a significant example of a romantic garden. The villa itself with its elegant neocclassical architecture today houses the city’s historical archives and represents an important cultural center. Continuing our itinerary, we head towards the birthplace of ADO Modiglani, one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. Although the original building was damaged during World War II bombing and subsequently rebuilt, a plaque commemorates the place where the great painter and sculptor was [Music] born. It was later dedicated to the great Venetian playwright Carlo Guldoni. The neocclassical facade introduces a richly decorated interior with a horseshoe shaped auditorium, four tiers of boxes and a gallery. The gilded staco decorations, the fresco ceiling, and the historic curtain painted by Annieati tell the story of the Levo people’s passion for the performing arts. The theater, still today the fulcrum of the city’s cultural life, hosts a prestigious opera and theater season. [Music] A testimony to the presence of the British community in Levono is the evocative English cemetery, Old English Cemetery. One of the oldest Protestant cemeteries in Italy, founded in 1644, this space designed as an English garden houses tombs and funeral monuments of considerable artistic value testimony to the passage through Levono of illustrious foreign travelers, merchants and intellectuals. Our itinerary continues toward the central market. A masterpiece of art noo architecture designed by Angolo Baloney and inaugurated in 1894. This imposing iron and glass structure inspired by the Parisian hull represents the beating heart of Levoro daily life. Crossing its aisles, you will be enveloped by a kaleidoscope of colors, scents, and voices. Leaving the market, we head towards Patza de la Republica, a large urban space that represents the heart of Leavono social life. This monumental square designed in the second half of the 19th century during the city’s expansion works is crossed by the evocative fosso rial, a canal that connects the Lenessia district with the port. The central bridge made of stone is one of the symbols of Levoro and offers a splendid view of the historic buildings that overlook the square. One of the most impressive works of Levono neocclassical architecture is the testeron an imposing hydraulic structure designed by architect Pasquali Pochanti and completed in 1842. This extraordinary building which served as a water reserve for the cities is striking for its monumental semic-ircular facade crowned by a tempenum reminiscent of a classical temple. The systemon was part of a complex water supply system that included the aqueduct and other systems located throughout the territory. The grandio internal hall with its vaults supported by mighty pillars creates an almost mystical atmosphere amplified by the play of light and shadow and reflections on the water. A visit to this masterpiece of hydraulic engineering offers a fascinating glimpse into 19th century Levono and its [Music] modernity. Continuing our journey, we encounter the imposing Foresa Nova, an extraordinary example of Medici military architecture. Built between 1590 and 1629 to a design by Bernardo Bontalenti, it represents an important testimony to the defensive system desired by Ferdinando first de Medici to protect the city and its port. With its characteristic pentagonal shape, the fortress stands like an artificial island surrounded by the Fosy Mediche. The mighty red brick walls, angular bastions and patrol walkways tell the story of the evolution of military art between the 16th and 17th centuries. Today, the Forza Nova has been converted into a lush public park where Levoro residents love to stroll in the shade of centuries old maritime pines. In the heart of the historic center stands the church of Santa Catarina, one of the most significant examples of Baroque architecture in Tuscanany. Built between 1720 and 1753 to a design by Giovanni del Fantasia, this church is striking for its imposing convex facade and majestic octagonal dome visible from many points in the city. [Music] The interior with an octagonal plan is dominated by the main altar made with precious polychrome marbles while the dome frescoed by the Florentine painter Josephe Maria Terranei represents the glory of St. Katherine. Particularly valuable are the canvases by Georgio Vasari and Mateo Roseli that adorned the side chapels. The building perfectly represents the architectural style of the noble Levono residences of the time with its portico underground floor and elegant windows surmounted by tempenums. Although today it houses offices and is not completely visitable inside, it is worth admiring the exterior and imagining the commercial fervor that animated this area in the golden centuries of the free port.
