Mauritius Surprising First Impressions 🇲🇺 vA 187
(Mahebourg, Mauritius) – Morning, my friends,
from Mahebourg in Mauritius! A new country for me. Let’s cross the road. So today is a market day.
So let’s go… Here in Mahebourg. So let’s go to discover
how Mauritius is on a market day, here in a small town like Mahebourg. That was actually the first place where the Europeans arrived
here in Mauritius. [In French] Hello! Hello. – Hello! – What’s this?
– This is Jamalac. – Jamalac? How much does it cost? Can I take a few?
– One sachet is 50. – One sachet is 50. – Yes. – I’ll take one sachet, please. Yes, one sachet. – This fruit
is excellent for hot weather. – Sorry? – It’s one of the best fruits
to eat. – Ah? – It refreshes the throat. – Oh, I see. This is a local fruit,
isn’t it? – No, it’s… – Is it good? Sorry, I don’t understand Creole. – Hello! – Hello. – Here.
Try this. – Oh, thank you. [In English] Let’s taste that. Oh, it’s good. Really good. It’s very fresh. There are some seeds inside. [In French] Can you eat
the seeds inside? – No, the seeds… – The seeds shouldn’t be eaten.
Understood. – Do you want salt with it? Do you want salt with it? – Yeah, okay. – Pineapple, how much?
– Pineapple? Half is 35. – Here you go. – Ah?
– Half is 35. – 35 rupees? – Hopla. Thank you!
– Thank you! – Have a good day. – A good day to you, too. – You see, a shop opening slowly.
Life doesn’t start very early here. It’s already 10 o’clock in the morning, and the shops are still opening,
starting to open. So I have a few challenges
actually for this video. I need to find shoes.
I don’t have shoes anymore. I need to find gloves,
cuz I rented a bicycle for this afternoon
and for the coming days but the handlebars are filthy. So I need gloves. And I need a pump
for the bicycle as well. There are some shoes here. Not the best for me. Oh, some street food. Some fake chili. Flip-flops. – Flip-flops? – Flip-flops.
No, no, no. I’m looking for shoes. – Shoes? – Yeah. – Yes.
Yes, we’ve got some. – Ah, you’ve got some shoes there.
– Yeah. We’ve got Stan Smith. – You’ve got what? – Stan Smith. – Stan? Ah? – Stan Smith.
– Stan Smith? Oh! – That’s Adidas. – Wow, that’s fancy. – That’s Adidas.
– Adidas? So how much is it? – 1,600. – 1,600? – Yeah. I can make it 1,500.
– You can make… – 1,500. – 1,500? – This is a good price. – This is
a good price. Yeah. – Yeah. Adidas. You know? – This is white.
It’s gonna get dirty very fast. – No! No! No, no, no. – No, no.
– It’s beautiful. – Well, it’s nice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. – Yeah. If it’s
beautiful, you must wash it.- Maybe I… That’s right. Yeah. – Okay, okay.
– You must clean it. – I must wash it. Okay. – You put on your jeans with that.
– So that’s how much? That’s $30. Something like that, no? 1,500.
– 1,500. 1,500 is… 500… – 500 is 10. So yeah, that’s $30. Yeah. – Yeah,
30, 30. $30. We’ve got Nike. – Nike. – Do you know Nike? – Yeah, yeah,
yeah. – Nike. – Yeah, yeah, yeah. – It’s 950. – It’s? – 950. – 950? – Yeah.
– Can I have a look? – Yeah, just go. – 950 — Nike. Oh, it’s lighter.
These ones are heavier. Yeah. – This is light. – This is light.
– This comes from… It’s not from China.
Do you speak English? – Yes. – Yes, that’s good. That’s better. That’s 45. Do you want to try it? – I don’t know. Cuz this is running,
or this is to wear? Oh, like this. – To wear. – Like this. Is this one
the same price? – Yeah, the same price. – 950, you said. – Yeah, that’s
the last price. – The last price? – Yeah. – So you’re starting
with the last price. – No, no, no. I didn’t tell you 1,100. I told you 950. – No, but these are not real ones I think,
no? – No, that’s come from Vietnam. – Come from Vietnam. Yeah,
yeah. – It’s not from China. – Yeah, from Vietnam. – China…
– Yeah. – Yeah, China is not good. It’s… – Vietnam is good.
– Yeah, it’s solid. Yeah. – Can you give me a better price? – No, 950. – 950? – Yeah,
that is too big. That’s 48. That’s 45. – Oh, 48. Yeah.
No, that’s too big. – 45, this… – I like this color.
I like these ones. – Yeah. The same color. – But… Yes. No, no.
This is slightly blue. And this is black. But do you have smaller,
and do you have…? Can you make it for 600? – No! I didn’t… I buy it
for 900. – You buy it for 900. – I get only a 50-rupee profit.
– Profit? – Yeah, that’s all. Do you want to try it? – Yeah,
can I try it? But this is too big. – Yes. – Can you make it still
like 800? – No, no, no. – No, no. There is no… – No. – That’s
already the last price. – Yes. Just sit down. – Yes, but I need 43
or 44 if you have. – Yeah. – So I need to sit down here.
[In French] Hello! – Hello. – How are you? – Are you
from France? – Yes, I’m French. – But you speak English.
– Yes, I do speak English. I make videos in English,
so it’s better if… – Ah? [In English] My videos are in English,
so it’s better if I speak English. – You like English. – Yes, it’s better
for the videos to be done in English cuz there are more people
who speak English, but… – Which part of France?
– Northern France. – North? – Yeah. – Very cold there? – Now
it’s quite cold, not very cold, but… – Quite cold. – Yeah, 5°C in winter.
Quite cold. For you, probably very cold. For me, it’s okay. – Here too hot? – Here too hot. Yeah. As soon
as I do anything, I just sweat. All the time. – First time
you’ve come to Mauritius? – First time in Mauritius. Yeah. Yeah.
– Do you like it? – Yeah, I like it. Yeah, I like it very much. People
are very relaxed and friendly. – What about the French Communist Party?
– French Communist Party? – Yeah. – Which one? The…? – Georges
Marchais. – Oh, Melenchon? Melenchon. I don’t like him very much. He’s… – Is Macron doing well? – Macron? Macron has made many mistakes
lately. – In France, you get the RMI. – RMI? – Yes. – Oh, the minimal salary. Yeah. – You do not work —
you get money. – Yes, yes. In Reunion, you also get it.
Yeah. – In Reunion. – Here, you don’t get it.
Here, you have to work. – The Reunionese
do not want independence. – Yeah, they don’t want
independence because if they have independence,
no more money. Then you have to work.
– They will die from hunger. – Exactly, yeah. – Cuz they
do not produce much. Exactly. Yeah, yeah. It’s very true. – Look at these two colors. – Okay.
If it’s not the same color, it’s okay. – Try this one. – Try this one?
What size is this? – No, try this one. The size is a bit dodgy. – 45. Okay.
Can I give you back this one? – Yeah. – Oh, the size is not
very reliable. – Yeah. – Okay. – First time in Mauritius, eh?
– First time in Mauritius. – You brought the sun to Mauritius. – I brought the sun?!
– Yeah. – I don’t know. No, I brought the clouds, maybe.
– Good when you put on your socks. – Yes, I think it’s good.
Yeah. – Yeah. – Wait, I just… – I’ll give you a Mauritian price.
– You’ll give me a Mauritian price? – Yeah, not tourist price. – Not…
Not tourist price. That’s good. – It’s good. – It’s
very good. Yeah. – Yeah. – I need the Mauritian price.
– I don’t strangle you. – You don’t strangle me. Yeah. – Yeah. – I just wanna walk a little bit with it
to see if it’s… – Yeah, it’s nice. – Cuz to see the size, you need
to walk a little bit. Yeah, just to… – When you return to your country,
you bring it to your country. – Yes, I’ll bring it
to my country. – Yeah. – But… Because I had some shoes,
but I put them in the washing machine. And they’re destroyed now. – You wash your shoes
in the washing machine. It’s bad. – Some… Yeah, yeah. I think it’s… Sometimes it works,
but this time it didn’t work. Yeah. – You destroyed the shoes. – Yeah,
I destroyed the shoes. – Yeah. The first time, it worked.
The second time, it was… – No, you just take a small brush
and brush it. – Yeah. Yeah. – But here, there’s sunshine.
Over there, there’s no sunshine. – Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Yeah,
here it dries fast. Yeah. – Yeah, dry quite quickly. – Dry
quickly. Yeah, that’s perfect for me. – Yeah. – Hopla. – Guten Tag.
– Guten Tag. Yes. – Yes. It’s good to speak English. – Yes,
it’s good to speak English indeed. – I don’t like French.
– You don’t like French. – No. – But people speak French
here better than English, no? – You know, I liked French before.
But now, I don’t like it. – Oh, really? Why? – Cuz I spent 22 years in England.
– Ah, you spent 22 years in England. – That’s why. – So you’re more used
to English now. – That’s why. Yeah. – I’ll get them.
Can I have them without the box, so I can put them in my bag:
it takes up less space. – You don’t want to bring rubbish
to your place. – Exactly. There you go. You can keep the change. It’s okay. Well, it’s 50… No need. – All right. – Okay, I get… Thank you very much! – Where
is it? You don’t want the bag? – I don’t want the bag. It’s okay. – That’s why. You keep all the rubbish
here. – Exactly, yeah. – All right. Have a nice day. – Thank you
very much! Have a nice… – Yeah. Thank you very much! Yeah, yes.
– You’re environment-friendly. – Environment-friendly? Oh, yes. – Yes,
yes. – I don’t take the bags and all this. Yes. – You are. – Yes, I am
environment-friendly. Yeah. – You’re clever. – Maybe. – We must protect the environment,
or else humanity will not exist. – Yeah, yeah. Otherwise, it’s gonna get
very hot. – Yeah. – Yeah, here… Yeah, yeah. – Enjoy your day.
– Thank you very much! – Do what you do: enjoy.
– Thank you very much! You too. Have a good day. – Swim.
– Good luck. Good luck with… I’ll go swimming this afternoon.
– How do you see the food in Mauritius? – Oh, fantastic. I love it. – Fantastic?
Do you like hot food? – I like spicy food. Yeah. – Yes? – Yes, yes.
– Many beautiful women in France? – In France? Yeah, we have
beautiful women. Yeah, yeah. – No Mauritians, yeah? – Mauritians
are beautiful as well. Yeah. – Yes? The Asian girl, eh? – Yeah,
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Very mixed here. – The color.
– Yeah. – It’s not too white. – Yeah, I like the color.
Yeah. – It’s brown. – Yeah, yeah. I like brown. Yeah. – In England, you must buy the cream,
the suntan to get that color. – Yes, exactly. Yeah, yeah. – Yeah?
– You, you have it naturally for… – Yeah. – I go in the sun
all day to try to get like you. – And you get the vitamin D. – Exactly, yeah. Yeah,
we get more vitamin D. Yeah. – Yes. Thank you!
– Thank you very much! Have a good day, man.
– Bye! You too. Yeah. – So here we got some shoes. It looks like it’s gonna be a friendly place
for vlogging around here. So I guess my next mission
should be to find gloves. Look at that! Dried fish rows. It looks like fish with sugar on it. Oh, this may… Oh, 15
for a slice of pineapple. I think I’ll get a slice. [In French]
Hello! I’d like a slice, please. – Okay. – It’s 15, right? – Yes, 15.
Would you like a sachet? – No. I’ll eat it now. – Okay.
– Hopla, here you go. Thank you! – Thank you, sir. – Thank you! So sweet. Insanely good. Wow! It’s funny because usually
it’s totally empty here, and today it’s very busy. So what’s very interesting in Mauritius is actually the local Creole,
so the local language, is based on French. So it’s a kind of broken French,
a bit different from French, further away from French
compared to the Reunion Creole. But still, it’s based on French, so… But it was also a British colony
at some point. Well, in the last… For 150 years after being
a French colony, so… People speak both French and English,
actually, which is quite convenient. Very easy… Communication
is super easy here, for me at least. Look at these tiny
pineapples. Hopla, sorry. Beautiful. A bit of… Taste of India with all the flower colors,
typical of Hinduism. Because the majority of the population
is of Indian origin here. What do we have here? I don’t know. Let’s try to find
some seafood as well, guys. Some seafood… Some street food. What do they have?
They have chapati here. – Yes. – Bonjour! Yes. – [In French]
Hello, how are you? – I’m fine. And you? – Fine. – [In English]
What is this? – This is peas. – Peas? – Peas. – Peas.
Can I have some? What…? I don’t know what… – Yes.
– Yes, I just… – Takeaway? – How much is it? Takeaway.
Yeah. – Five rupees each. – Five rupees each?
– Each, yes. – Ah, okay. Just give me two. – Yes, two.
– Oh, you sell like paratha with… – Yes. – …some stuff as well. Okay.
– My friend, you’ll get 25. Okay? – Perfect! All good.
– You want five more, no? – Ah? – Five more, five?
– That’s fine. – You’re good. Help me. Can you help me? – That’s
five rupees. That’s five rupees. – Only two. Two? – Give me three.
Three, three, three. – Three? – Yeah, but… No, because I’m gonna eat
many different types of food, so… – Yes. – If I eat too much.
– Thank you, my friend! – Thank you! – Have
a nice day! – You too. – How much do I owe you,
my friend? – 150 rupees. – So it’s peas. Let’s try some peas. I guess it looks like some Indian stuff, kind of Indian fried peas,
Indian-style fried peas. Oh, it’s good. Oh, really good. Yeah. It’s kind of… Yeah,
it’s kind of a falafel. But Indian style. Chili. All the smells
are fantastic in this market. As you see, they’ve got
the dragon fruit from Southeast Asia. [In French] 100 rupees.
– 100 rupees for the shorts. – 100 rupees for the shorts. [In English]
$2 for the shorts, short pants. Look at all the pastries. So the food here is amazing
because basically, it’s a mix of French… Well… No, the main is Indian, mixed
with Chinese and French basically. What’s that? Oh, some kind
of sweets. All sorts of sweets. There’s a big traffic jam. – Hello! – I’m done with the shopping. – Okay, so that’s probably the place
where I could find some gloves, to be able to hold my bicycle. Socks. Ah! Underwear. No. I didn’t find them. Oh, the herbs. Full of aromatic herbs
around here. It smells so good. So just behind there,
you have the bus station, actually. So all this is a temporary market. Usually, it’s not here. And you see,
all here is the bus station. I mean, given the temperature here, it’s probably not the best country
to find gloves. Maybe I should buy socks
and use them as gloves. There’s another section there. It’s funny because what the guy
said at the shoe shop… It’s quite famous that in the French
overseas territories… In France, you have a system
where if you don’t work, you can still apply
for a minimum salary, in order to survive, which is
usually like €400 or €500. I mean, with the prices in France,
it’s quite hard to survive with this. But still, it’s better than… I mean, this doesn’t exist
in most countries in the world. And it’s quite famous that the… In the French overseas territories
basically, many locals live thanks to it. It’s funny that the guy was like, “I know why Reunion doesn’t want
to be independent, because otherwise,
they’d have to work.” And it’s quite true actually.
That’s the main reason… That’s how France manages to keep some territories
all around the world. Basically, France
just pours a lot of money, and gives money to the people. So then the people
don’t wanna leave France. Oh, some necklaces. Oh, some vanilla. [In French] Hello. – Hello.
Would you like some vanilla? I’ll give you a mix. – All right.
– Great. Mom, come and see this. Come and see this. This is
for you. Okay. – Perfect. – The vanilla is 10 rupees per gram.
– 10 rupees per gram? – Yes. – So this one is 1,500. – Yes.
Do you want it for 500, for 1,000? How much do you want? I’ll give you that.
– I’ll take it for 500. – For 500. – Five big mandarins for 100! Five big mandarins for 100,
five big mandarins for 100! – Is it from here? Is it from Mauritius?
– Yes, yes. – Here you go. Thank you! Have a good day.
Where can I seal it? – Here there’s no electricity. – Ah,
there’s no electricity. – With a lighter. – With…? – With a lighter.
– Ah, with a lighter. All right. – Otherwise, at the hotel,
they can seal it at the reception. – All right. I’ll ask my hotel.
Thank you very much! Sorry. Yeah, sorry to granny.
I forgot to buy vanilla in Reunion. The one in Reunion is supposed
to be better. But I forgot. – [In French] Five big mandarins
for 100, five big mandarins for 100! Five for 100, five for 100!
– I’ll take some. – Thank you. – Thank you!
Have a good day. – Five big mandarins for 100! – Okay, so I need to buy socks
because the gloves I’m not gonna find. Oh, there are shoes here.
I don’t know. The seller was nice there. So basically, here,
because Creole is based on French, it seems to me that people speak
French better than English actually. And all the signs are often written
either in Creole or in French. And Creole, when you see it written, is quite easily understandable
as a French. That’s when it’s spoken
that it’s harder to understand. Oh, look at that. – [In French] Come
taste this. – I’ll try it. What’s it? – No, no. I offer natural products,
not candied ones. – Oh, I see. – It’s natural. Here, taste it.
– Natural. – No, no. Give me the stick. Take only the mango. – Oh,
I should take only the mango. Understood. – Give me
the stick. – All right. – Is it delicious? – Yes.
– Would you like a sachet? – How much is it? – It’s 100 rupees.
– 100 rupees. – It’s 100 rupees. Here you go. Our mango
is 100% natural. – Natural. – All right,
that’s it. That’s it. That’s it. – Thank you very much. – Thank you! Have a good day! So I need to have some mangoes
now. Let’s go sit somewhere. Hopla! Ah, some good mangoes. Oh, this is really good. Wow! Fantastic. Amazing! It’s a little bit green. Not fully ripe yet, but still fantastic. [In French] Oh, elastic. Yes. I’ll take this. – It’s 35.
– 35? – 35 rupees. – Here you go. – Thank you! – Thank you! Have a good day!
– A good day to you, too. – So I’m gonna use that with some rags, for the handlebars of my bicycle. – [In French] 50 rupees. – 50 for one? And how much are these ones? – [In English] Five — 100. – 500? – Five — 100. – Oh,
five — 100. Oh, five — 100. You don’t sell them per piece? For two? I just want two. I just want those two. It’s okay? [In French] So it’s 40, right?
– [In English] 40 rupees. – 40 rupees. [In French] 25, 35, and 40. [In English]
40. Thank you very much! – Thank you. – Okay, so I’ve got a solution
for my handlebars. Look at this beautiful tree. Big tissues. Big pieces of fabric. It’s almost like the Middle East
in some places here. Look at this tree, guys. Beautiful! Another beautiful tree.
I think it’s a banyan or… Well, something like that. And here, we finally see the sea
and the lagoon and some mountains there. Okay, that’s the exit of the market.
So maybe, let’s… Yeah, maybe let’s… To finish the market part of the video,
maybe let’s get a coconut. They have… I’ve seen they have coconut here. Oh, shoes again.
What do we have? We have the ice man. – [In French] Grated ice cube, sir.
– Hello! – Hello. – What are you making? – Grated ice cube. – Grated ice cube?
– Yes, a traditional ice cream. – Oh, I see. How much is it? – 50. – 50? – Rupees, rupees. – Rupees. Yes,
yes. If it were €50, that’d be a problem. – You’ll drink it and then…
– I’ll taste it. – Yeah. – So, I choose the flavor, right?
– No, I tell you what’s best. Otherwise… – Oh, all right.
You make the best one. – There you go.
You’ll say like the Europeans. But I’ll give you the authentic taste. There you go. – And you put
some taste on top. All right. So what’s the taste?
What’s the blue? – All have… All tastes. – All different? – Yeah. We can’t reveal it because… – [In French] Oh, what’s that? Honey? – [In English] Ice man.
– [In French] How much is it? – 50 rupees, rupees. – I’m here.
– Don’t you have 50 rupees on you? – I am here. – You don’t have 50 rupees? – No, sorry. I don’t have
any more change. I already have everything…
I only have a few coins left. That’s all. – Four, five. – Four. – Two,
three, four. – All right, thank you. Thank you! Have a good day!
– Have a good day, too! [In English] So let’s try our Mauritian ice cream. Where am I gonna eat that? That’s good. Here is the toilet.
It’s not for eating ice cream. Here is the toilet also.
So not for ice cream. What is this guy doing? Oh, wow! Roasting peanuts. Bonjour! Allez! Time for the ice cream now. So he put many things on it. I don’t know what all the things are.
That’s how it looks. I have no idea if the ice
is safe to eat. I’ll find out. Wow! That’s good.
Traditional Mauritian ice cream. It’s really good, actually. All the mix of flavors. Wow! What’s nice with the Indians is
they really don’t care about the camera. It’s not like in Africa,
where you might be a spy as soon as you have a camera. Here, you’re a friend
if you have a camera. It’s really good. Wow! – Hi! – Hi! – A big one again?
– Yes, but do you have it with…? Younger? – Which one do you want?
– With… [In French] With less cream. Younger. – Younger? – Yes. – Like this,
with the cream being lighter. – Sorry? – The cream, which is lighter.
– Yes, exactly. Less thick and lighter. Yeah, how much is it?
– It’s 200 rupees. – It’s 200. – Do you want the cream like this? – A bit thinner.
– Thinner? – Yes, thinner. Sorry. – We only have it this way.
– Sorry? – We only have it like this. – I’ll take it like this.
– No problem. Here you go. Thank you very much. Here you go.
There you have it! – Hopla. Thank you! Hopla. It’s been a very long time
since I had coconut. Well, I’ve been here for a few days. I come here every day, but…
I love it. I love it so much. This is the second best fruit
in the world for me, after the durian. – [In French] Hello!
– Hello! How are you? Thank you very much! – Thank you
so much. Have a good day! – Bye! – Usually, there is nobody here, but… Well, today is market day.
So it’s very busy. It’s funny. Here they call it… So the flesh, they call it “la crème”,
which means “the cream” in French. I didn’t know you called it
like that in French. And what surprised me
about the coconut as well is that… I don’t know.
For some reason, in East Africa… Well, maybe you have to go
to the coast or something. I don’t know, but, well,
for some reason, in Africa, you don’t have coconuts:
maybe because it’s highlands. But as far… A few years… The last time I was in coconut
places, coconut areas, the coconut price was €1
everywhere in the world basically, $1. It was the same price
almost anywhere in the world. And here, it’s… I mean, it’s good. I love it. I’m okay to pay
what you pay, but it’s $4, so… Wow! There has been a lot of inflation in the coconut prices
in the world recently. And look at this beauty, guys! The beautiful lagoon of Mahebourg. This is so good.
This fruit is so fantastic! You can drink and eat from it. Basically, you could survive
only on coconuts. (to be continued…)
A few days after arriving in Mahebourg, in Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, I go to explore the vibrant market of Mahebourg.
The locals are friendly and the first bits of street food I try start to reveal the culinary wonders Mauritius might have to offer.
