Exploring the Haunted Leper Colony on Trinidad’s Deserted Island

this here is going to be home for the next 6 months jackari is an uninhabited island can’t describe it any other way actually used to have a leprosy colony here wow titan is just putting up the Q flag now because we’re in Trinidad and we’re just starting the process of checking in here checking into Trinidad is more complicated than other places we’ve been hopefully we are done by the whole process by 4:00 and then the idea is we’re going to head to Chaka Chakari for the weekend down the islands and then come back here on Monday ready to haul out yep good girl [Music] [Applause] okay this here is going to be home for the next 6 months for Liga uh we have some other adventures planned as well but yeah a new experience for us okay let’s go find a bit we just had like a really great check-in experience again in Trinidad the first time we came here it took a really long time cuz we had no idea what we’re doing here in the the Chagaras area yeah they’re just so good so when we’re in we’re done we’re done yes uh obviously you can’t take a camera into meetings what I can tell you is there was so much potential for things to go wrong or be delayed or take time today and everything went so smoothly we could not be happier so now we’re about to lift the tender lift the anchor and we’re going to Chaka Chakari for the weekend you know Chagaramas is industrial it is not a a relaxing anchorage but Chaka Chakari is just about abandoned during the week and very few boats on the weekend it is perfect for what we want for our last couple days on the water think we’re leaving a good time i don’t know if that’s rain or not the current from the current adorable so far coming in I can see maybe one boat which is good it means you have to pick the anchorage before everybody comes down like tomorrow and Saturday [Applause] she wants to know what you’re looking for you’re happy oh yeah let’s go have a look at the old abandoned hospital sounds creepy as hell but honestly my biggest concern is I don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes hence I have enough bugs around me probably to kill a small animal for those of you who don’t know Trinies will know though Jackari is an uninhabited island actually used to have a leprosy colony here so it’s got lots of abandoned buildings in relation to that you’re a happy dog so someone may Oh I’m Don’t worry about it so let me show you that room because aside from the fact it does not have a floor people appear to have been using the uh entrance as a toilet upstairs probably not the right upstairs let’s pop a wall hey I don’t know what animal that is but I don’t like it [Music] all right I’m coming toilets are a nogo man this place would be horrifying at nighttime i’m glad we uh never came up i presume he’s gone this way bugs bugs bugs [Music] lost my balance wow creepy as what was that check this out i’m doing a forensic investigation uhhuh the whole room oh wow how much does she care not at all what’s in the spooky i’m so glad I came i didn’t know there was a creepy old church up here this old the copper ring what happened no violence though very disappointed creepy doorway i’m going to let you go up first cuz if you can be held I’m fine yeah there’s a beam through the middle oh creepy the creepiest i don’t know if I’ve been in an abandoned church too i don’t think so oh wow nice view not what I call safer oh no take your 20 ass kilos elsewhere just walk on um walk on the nails creepiest churches maximus onward to the next creepy building what’s the issue i’m short what i’m short and there’s two steps missing straight down now I can do it the vultures back the vultures are back literally the vulture sounds add like a good 50% extra creepiness like for sure i’m so glad we never came up here at night something we talked about a few times when we’ve been here is coming up here at night that would have scared the absolute pants off me why people hole in the wall i don’t understand either bug spray seems to be working all right all right let’s continue come on fearless leader and I’m talking to the dog and not you go on dog she’s manically happy oh yeah unhinged you find some old primary i don’t know go that way i mean there’s another path this way by the look of it oh that thing’s got spiky bits on it some stairs here and then a path that goes left it’s like a more defined path over here huh didn’t realize this one was so big end of the road let’s go have a look inside man you add all the different elements of this oh that’s a huge mosquito this place I will never come up interestingly there’s like um barely any rubbish or or mess up here which I think the dog’s on the second floor this uh looks like the old coast for Trinidad and Tobago um just just because of the three shifts on it but they uh I think they changed it last year or they started this year’s missing i am I don’t know what got into the dog but she manic oh wow all right there’s a a set of stairs over there and then there’s a set of stairs here you all right i think he’s okay these are the ones Trent went up so that’s what I’m going to do don’t know if you can tell with the camera but the whole stairs have got a huge slant to them you happy [Music] [Music] i had a guess these would be the rooms i have to say um back in Australia when I was a school teacher I worked at one point in a school that was a converted convent i don’t like the noises and the top floor of the the main building um used to be the bedrooms for the nuns that were living in the convent and the layout was pretty similar to this and then it had a couple of common rooms at the end and that’s what we were using it as our um senior student classrooms and then the other other rooms were like storage one was my office um there was an archive for the the water of nuns that it was so yeah it actually reminds me of that being super careful on where I step because if you look down in here there are sections of the floor that are just rotten he was running fast but I bet it hurt bit of a road running moment pieces and there’s the vultures the development of this species under adversity us to rise out and look at all of the fa have vultures they add to the creepy factor don’t they like it couldn’t be hummingbirds could it it had to be like vulture things don’t think I’m going to roll that dice i think I’m just going to go with the the stairs that I know i do wonder what these were like I know we’re making jokes but there’s these kind of holes all the way out are you going to go down those ones i shall follow you down then tip if you’re ever going to explore a building like this bring someone who is much heavier than you to go first [Music] pardon yeah but that’s just because I’m an incredibly unlucky and clumsy human being [Music] i really need a torch i didn’t me neither did I be so dehydrated h I have a bit of water in my backpack i’m not sure if the camera will pick it up but there’s actually a list of equipment on the back of the the little cupboard here the water tank’s got water unsafe painted on it the big water tank here has got water unsafe painted on the side of it 1977 Trinidad really yeah how’s that you just hit me in the boobs republic of Trinidad and Tobago 1977 supports for this building are a bit worse for work oh look it’s a stick [Laughter] i’m glad we decided to come out here this pretty cool all right let’s go nature too much nature that’s the end of the complex so time to make our way back down the hill grab the tender and uh go and wash all of the bug spray and whatever else we’ve managed to collect off check out that wall it’s cool and the current is taking me away but we’ve been out here to check a chakari um there is something special about this place i don’t know what it is it’s just it’s just somewhere that you can sit in a float and float away you don’t really care like it’s literally just a place for relaxing and doing nothing and it’s really nice to do that sometimes so I’m sure that we will come out here while we’re on the hard stand um especially with one of our good friends Bruce but yeah I mean it’s not like anywhere else I’ve been in the Caribbean it’s just so It’s peaceful

As we travel around the world we always love finding abandoned places to urban explore.

After sailing into Trinidad & Tobago, we cleared into the country then motored our live aboard catamaran to the uninhabited island of Chacachacare. One of Trinidad’s western islands, it’s a great anchorage for visiting yachts. It’s also a formed leper colony.

Despite being to Trinidad before we’d never explored the abandoned building including the convent and church, which were used by the nuns who cared for the lepers that lived here. This was the perfect time to go see a place some call haunted, the ruins of which are slowly being overtaken by the jungle.
