What I spend in a day living in Chiang Mai, Thailand
so in today’s video I’m going to share what I spend in a day living in Chiang Mai So I’m just getting my day started Um if you’ve watched some of my other videos you know I’ve been obsessed with these peanut butter pancakes Um it comes with banana peanut butter Um and I ordered two and so this was grab delivery So with delivery and both pancakes it costs 200 bot which is around $6 Um after this I’m going to go work at a cafe and then I’ll just take you around with me for the day and show you what things cost and at the end of the day I’ll do a final roundup of what I spent in total So I had some downtime at home Um I’m actually heading to a cafe to get some work done now Um it’s a small little local shop I’ll show you what that’s like and how much things cost there [Music] oatmeal [Music] Uh so I’m taking a little brain break It’s actually raining now Um I had a matcha earlier and it was 80 bot which is around $2 Um but this is a small little local um cafe that one of my old friends um showed me and it’s super quiet It’s always like not many people are here Um and yeah it’s just a nice place I’ll show you the rain So yeah it’s raining And yes you can see these This is how the wires look here which is something everyone always talks about when they come to town It’s like the first thing that they notice So I finished up what I was trying to finish this afternoon with work some project stuff Um I’m going to take a break now and go to the gym Um the gym I think it’s usually only 50 bot for entry Um but you can I think for the month you can do like 1,500 bot or something Super cheap compared to some of the other gyms Um but 50 bot is like I don’t know $2 to use the gym Okay so I’m back home from the cafe I’m taking a little break before I go to the gym Um I actually stopped by at Tesco which is a small chain grocery store here I got toilet paper because priorities I have eight jumbo rolls I paid 120 bot which is around 4S4 US Um and then I also got these two snacks which are currently my favorite snacks This is like corn chips And then these are just Sun Chips like the Thai version of Sun Chips These were each 20 bot each which is less than a dollar So like 60.70 So around $2 for both of these So total $6 for toilet paper and for snacks Um I’m going to finish up some work and some other things I want to get done Um but I’m waiting for traffic to die down because driving back from the cafe was a nightmare Like everyone’s getting off work Um and yeah just a lot of people on the road Um I was thinking of going to the gym near me which was the 50 bot gym the $2 gym that I had mentioned but I’m actually thinking of going to one of the newer ones which is a 15 20 minute drive Um but we’ll see where I end up I just want to wait for traffic to die down Um and I do need to get gas on the way Um and gas is usually I spend around 1,000 um bot every 2 weeks so 2,000 bot per month usually Um and that I want to say that’s around 30 USD Um so I’m going to do that on the way to the gym But yeah first I’m going to eat some food finish up some more work stuff Um and then we’ll go to the gym Just ordered food Um I got it from a place called uh Panai It’s a coffee shop that I usually go to and they have good food and they’re open pretty late But I got it in Thai It’s called Pad Kapow and it’s basically um stir- fried basil You can add chicken which is guy in Thai or um pork which is moo So basically it’s padkapow guy is what I got Um it can be really spicy and I added actually um I’m trying to convert convert I’m trying to translate the word So I got a omelette So in Thai it’s called kai Um but you can also get kaida which is just like over easy Um and they put it on top of the meat which is really common So it looks let me get it from the bag And one thing about Thailand is they really overdo it with plastic Like everything is in plastic Even you know the when I order drinks they put the drinks in plastic um like bags sometimes with and then you pop a hole in the plastic bag to drink from the with the straw Um yeah they just overdo it but that’s unrelated Um so it came like this So you can see the omelette and then the meat So again the meat is wrapped in plastic which is really common here Um and I paid hundred bot for this actually so around $4 US Um and it’s really good I don’t know if it’s exactly the healthiest but podka is just a really common um easy Thai dish here Um and it’s one of my favorites Um another one that’s really popular in northern Thailand so Mai specifically is koy So it’s basically like um egg noodle curry and that has chicken usually Um and it can also be really spicy And it’s funny because the Thai level of spicy is like if you say just a little bit of spice that still means a lot for Thai people or what they usually put in So sometimes you have to be really specific and you can say like you don’t want spicy would be my pet My means no pet is spicy Um or if you just want a little bit of spicy you can say pet noi Noi means just a little bit Um so yeah Thai food 101 I’m going to eat my food Um finish up some work like I said and then go to the gym [Music] The nice thing about um Thailand is that they pump the gas for you here so you don’t have to get out of the car They also clean the windshield for you which is really nice Let’s see how much I have to pay for gas Okay so to fill up today I had a little still left in the tank It’s 978 or around Oh just kidding He put it so 1,000 bot Same as before The lighting is completely terrible cuz it’s so dark out I forgot to mention whenever you spend 1,000 bot at the gas station they give you like a free water bottle So fun fact Um but I actually am at a different gym the one I mentioned Um that’s like 20 minutes away Um and it’s a 100 bot to get in so that’s around three or four USD Um and that’s pretty much going to be my day I’m going to go to dinner or maybe order a delivery I don’t know Let’s see um how hungry I am after the gym I’m back home from the gym and I am exhausted So I’m going to end the video here I still need to get dinner so I’m just going to add another 200 bot for that Um but the total came out to $1,840 BOT which is around $56 But again obviously I’m not buying toilet paper every single day I’m not paying a thousand bot for gas every also the 1,000 bot for gas usually lasts me around two weeks Um so yeah total today I spent $56 US Um that can be a lot for some people and it can be very little for others It depends on you know what kind of lifestyle you’re looking for It’s a on the higher end for me just because I don’t usually I mean I spend a lot on food but other things I don’t spend so much on So um yeah and I also don’t really I’m not one of those people that tracks every single dinner or every single drink that I buy but I have a general idea of how much I spend per month And I’m usually spending around $400 to $500 a month on like food snacks cafes that I’m working at So um yeah aside from the gas and like some of the other things like the What did I spend i mean even the toilet paper wasn’t it’s not like it’s breaking the bank but um for Thailand I feel like spending 1,840 bot in one day is a lot just considering the cost of living here and what the average you know Thai person is paying Um and even some of my friends who are foreigners that are living here um are that are living on a tighter tighter budget Oh my god I’m so tired I need to end this video Um but yeah so that’s pretty much it I just wanted to give an idea of you know how much I spend in a day on average Again this is an outlier so to speak because of the gas and other things but um I just think it helps give perspective because we see this monthly cost of living videos and I even did one a few weeks ago I think Um and a lot of that is fixed expenses So just basic things like rent bills but it it doesn’t account for um things like savings investments it doesn’t count for you know you want to go out with some friends and have some drinks Um the cost of living videos that I have made are all based on just fixed um expenses So yeah traveling if you want to go do that um or if you just want some extra fun money for other things um or maybe you want to you know redesign your home and buy furniture Like those are things to take into consideration But I think it’s just helpful to see what the possibilities are like in terms of um spending money here in Thailand So that’s all I have for this video Um I also wanted to share that I wanted to start doing um some interviews on the channel So not home tours or anything like that but just kind of um sharing you know my friends or people that I know from around the world not just Americans but just sharing their story of how they got to Thailand or maybe they’re in other places in Southeast Asia And um yeah just kind of sharing their story and um what got them here and the cost of living where wherever they are Um and I’m curious if you guys would be interested in um hearing those stories because I feel like for me it’s one thing to share my experiences um as an American and I know a lot of the um community that I have are also Americans as well but I think it’s really helpful to see other perspectives from other cultures from people from different parts of the world I have friends from almost every single country Spain Brazil China um Russia Ukraine uh Israel um just so many countries Um Venezuela um yeah there’s just Yeah and I feel like there’s so much to share about their lives and their stories and yeah just curious if you guys would be interested in hearing more of that Um that’s pretty much it So I will see you guys in the next video Um if you haven’t already please like and subscribe to the channel um it really helps get the channel out there for those who um might need it or maybe some of these videos will help them kind of prepare for their move to Mai So I appreciate all of you who are here and I’ll see you next

What u paid for 2 p & j and a banana is way more than what id have to spend for same in Egypt, what do you say we learn Thai and bargain,
Very informative, thank you as a slow traveler business man, Thom
I want to be the story after visiting Thailand and figuring in the citizenship process,a DuBai Citizenship seems the way to go as it relates to taxes. You’re video again, very informative and entertaining. Thanks
love that idea to interview others about how they got to thailand/ chiang mai or other expats and what they do for work or visa etc… look forward to it… im soaking up as much info as i can. 🙂
This was a really interesting vlog! Looking forward to more!
I like these videos, thanks for sharing. I too had pad grapou (sp?)today, but I paid almost $20 USD. It was still worth it. I would like to see the interviews with your friends especially with the newer arrivals. The rapidly changing laws concerning visas and now even establishing a bank account (Bangkok Bank) have me a little concerned. Just curious how they fared. Nice to see you walking without a brace, have a great week!

Thanks for detailed cost for a day. If 1,000 baht is higher end…what would be a "regular" day spend?
Yes to interviews! Very interested in the Whys of what caused them to move and also underneath the surface adjustments (the good stuff and challenges also) especially those first years.
Hey Kat. I'm planning on moving to Chiang Mai within about a year and a half. I am finishing up school before I leave but I love your videos as it helps so much with context and planning my finances. Thank you for putting out content regularly. Also, thanks for getting off your couch and showing content out in town. I love seeing more of Chiang Mai through the eyes of residents. Interviews would be cool I guess. Thanks again!
