Exploring Saumur, a French town and it’s beautiful Chateau overlooking the Loire River

hi everyone Welcome to GRX Travels Hi We’re in Simur at the moment It’s a uh a town in the Lwir Valley and we’re off to look around and have a look at it So come and see what we find out Yes Sumur is a town in western France overlooking the Lir River It’s about a 3 and 1/2 hour drive from Paris [Laughter] I’ve had to turn around and come up here We had a bit of a discussion on whether this was a road or not It looks like someone’s driveway But we should have known by now when you’re in Europe and UK and things there are plenty of little alleyways and laneways aren’t there yes Goodness First we’re going to see if we can get something to eat It’s 11:00 We had a bit of a sleep in and a bit of a Zoom uh session with family back home and all we’ve had is a cup of coffee for breakfast so far So I’m getting hungry Yeah So definitely brunch coming up Yes Looks like a pretty cool church up ahead of us here Don’t know if we have time to really look at that at this moment Hunger is getting the better of us Here we can hear singing from inside the church Looks like there’s a service on It’s nice isn’t it and lots of cars parked here Must be a big congregation Yes Wow [Applause] Okay How far to the cafe Lyn uh 700 m it says Okay good Hey these look nice Christmas is coming They’re cute aren’t they they are Little titty down here Yeah that’s quite cute Look like the recycling bins here How far now um 350 m Okay Quickly then I’m getting so hungry Me too [Music] It looks like I can see shops in the far distance there Yes Pharmacy or something That looks What have we found here Lynn look all the shells are nice Nice old paintings Oh yeah They are quite good aren’t they yeah Some really nice ones here Yes Yeah They’re lovely aren’t they look at this one of the sea and the cliffs Mhm That’s really nice Yeah 520 and this one there’s €2,600 Yeah Beautiful Oh there’s 6,200 Yeah that’s particularly nice isn’t it nice shells along here too And sea urchent The big spines Yeah Looks like a nice shop Interesting shop All right on to find the cafe Oh yes That distracted us didn’t it yeah sure did But they were beautiful paintings Actually lost my appetite for a couple of minutes Was back again Look at this house here Looks medieval Very cool place In fact the street there looks pretty medieval Wow This place was a bit of a surprise after those streets we were walking down Very cool And whereabouts is this one then uh no We go around here Around over there do we yes Our app is taking us on a bit of a ticky tour around the place We will finally get to this one I am following the GPS Apparently it’s got good reviews That’s why we’re persisting Hold on No I think it’s down Not exactly sure Oh no Right we’ve finally found it Interesting name It has Oh it looks nice Enjoy it Okay What do you think have a look at the menu Um haven’t had a look yet but I’m keen Yes We aren’t all that sure what we ordered but both were very nice Time to head on Wow We’re just coming over to have a look at the L River after having nice uh brunch It’s quite a um big river isn’t it Lynn it is Yeah Look at that We’re off to uh try and get a virtual It’s um across the river So we’re going across the bridge and then it’s not too far I don’t think after the bridge Okay And apparently it’s a great view of this of town It is Okay Yeah Let’s head off then In 200 m walk over the bridge on the right Neat looking boat down there Looks like they’ve been got a party on board [Music] Yeah It’s pretty wide isn’t it it is Yes Yeah Oh there we are down onto the water’s edge Look at the view out over to the That’s amazing town here No wonder the uh virtual was put out in this area Okay It’s about 100 100 mters 100 meters to take the photo for the virtual Yes Okay It’s good that locals know where the best places are to take photos of their town isn’t it yeah It’s great Yeah Oh looks like there’s a telescope here H So you can look across at the town Okay now we’re at the place of the virtual And number one it says take a picture of you or personal object with the view in the background Okay that’s nice and easy And number two at the coordinates you’ll find something that will improve your view Yes Oh I wonder what that might be Yeah Golly could be this That’s right Okay Send me the last four digits of the phone number Okay So we can do that too That’s That’s nice and easy That’s a good one isn’t it good one Yeah Yeah Photo for the log Okay we got that virtual lovely view of the town across the water Now we’re heading back over the bridge and we’re going to have a good look at that chateau because there’s an adventure lab to do there So that’ll be five points if we get it all So that’s good Anyway come and have a look at the chateau close up But the first location for the adventure they have is just across the road That’s nice and close At a theater Yes Right So across we go Are we at the location yes Okay Okay What do we have to do uh oh it’s in it’s in French Okay Um can we translate it uh can we Okay it says there are five personalities and we have to say which one’s in the center You can see the first couple there So we have to find the one in the center going back the way we came this morning to get our brunch Very lovely through here Lots of great cafes by the looks Now it’s quarter to two Place is filled up since this morning Looks like there’s a plaque on the wall of the church here That might give us the answer we’re looking for The question is uh what is the depth of the piles that we use to straighten the church okay Well the plaque’s not in English so we need to translate it Good old Google Translate Let’s have a look and see Okay we think we’ve got the answer Let’s see Submit It’s going round Yay Yay We got it Right 157 m to the next one Do a bit of a Uturn Come back through the square and up this way Looks like it might be taking us up to the chatau There’s a sign here saying chatau Got some stairs to go up here Which way do we go we have to not exactly sure Um okay We’re going left folks Yeah This is looking good Looking good It’s looking good Oh I like this gate here Look at this bit just here with the hand Person sitting on it That’s quite cool Okay continue on up Okay we’ve given it a good look around here where the uh compass is saying it should be We can’t see it Maybe we know the name of the house now from the plaque um down the hill here We know the name of the house don’t we so maybe we can Google it and find out the answer It’s a good idea Yep Okay we’re going to have to head back Although it’s telling us that it’s 17 m up there we’re down past that hand again And we saw people reading something on the wall So although the compass is saying we’re 25 m away this is um the place where there might be an answer It’s the only place we can see Okay we found the plaque thanks to the photo on the description and we’re going to see if we have the right answer from it Submit Is it going around yep Yay We got it There we are That was a bit tough wasn’t it for us yeah So we know how much it uh it cost Yes Yeah All right Continue All right Onward we go We got to go in and see if we can have a little bit of a look around Anyway looks pretty awesome uh from a distance that’s for sure Sure does Yeah No I didn’t either Wow Pretty big battlements here It was originally constructed in the 10th century as a fortified stronghold against Norman attacks We are entering the castle through the gate house Following its destruction in 1067 the castle was rebuilt by Henry II of England in the late 12th century Wow Goodness Pretty impressive place Apparently the chatau has had a turbulent past Narrowly avoiding demolition Nice flower garden over in front of the building Okay up we go into the castle The holes up there are so things can be dropped or fired on any attackers In the first part of the 20th century the city acquired the castle and began a restoration program to house a museum of the decorative arts All right [Music] Oh looks like a big well here Can you see anything down there Lynn no Oh there’s people walking along underneath Gosh is this a well i’m not sure Bit unusual Wasn’t research and I’ll go put it down underneath later Oh look There’s the whole room here And look up there in the ceiling You can see where we look down Legend says that a tunnel runs from the castle under the river to the right bank This artwork on the wall conjures up the legendary entrance of the tunnel Right Coming out of here what they call the tunnel We’re heading up and to the right Looks like we’re getting up to the courtyard when we came in Are you back out again yep That’s right Hey should we go in over to there okay The the little door or the big one i don’t really know The real door Okay Looks like it’s got to be more stairs It does [Applause] Okay Looks like they’ve decorated this path Oh this is nice There’s obviously a porcelain collection here Yes there’s a lot of [Music] it The shadow holds a significant collection of ceramic art It houses more than 1500 pieces illustrating the main French and European production centers of ceramics It’s worth looking up as well [Music] It’s a big chest Wow Super deep isn’t it not sure what I think about this piece [Music] [Music] Okay we’re heading up again in case there’s a view out over the city the top of the chatau Now it doesn’t look like I’m getting right up to the top Another exhibition here This fella looks a bit of a laugh sitting on a cell saddle without a hook How do you do sir all right we’re heading down cuz we still have a couple more of the adventure labs to collect Is going super fast down here Can’t keep up with her without falling over Okay on to finish the adventure lab Great view of the shadow as we walk past here just um following the compass and generally wandering around hopefully in the right direction here Beautiful view down to the river in the distance Do we know how far away it is then it’s only 90 m Oh wow Looks like we’re going in the right direction If we jump over that fence it’s not going to take very long Jump over this fence Yeah Right Get there in a couple of seconds I reckon I reckon Cool view down there though Yeah Certainly getting a good view of the cast of the chateau Hey just down here We got to go across the [Applause] crossing Looks like some nice artwork on the tunnel here Yeah it does Those horses look good don’t they okay cross we go [Applause] Okay it just beeped So we can’t be too far off it No 34 m How many 30 About 30 Okay Let’s hope it’s down here cuz sometimes with uh Geocaches Adventure Labs it’s the level you’re on And we sure hope it isn’t back here up at the castle I don’t think we’ll be going back up We won’t be No definitely not So keep our fingers crossed that it is down here where we thought it was Oh Uh-oh Uh-oh Hold on Oh no But we can get the um if we can get the answer Yep But we’ve got to trans translate one Never mind Bit of fitness for us today Yeah Been sitting in the car all yesterday driving back into France from Italy So could get stretch our legs a bit Well we’ve climbed back up the hill If you’re doing this one you’re probably best to do this one first and then go down and do the one we’ve just done But man it’s taking us up to an awesome view over the river Sure is Look at that Wow [Applause] Well worth it this adventure lab isn’t it oh yes it is It’s been a great little tour of the town Hasn’t really mattered has it no we haven’t had that many zigzags Except to hope it’s not that uh plaque down over there on the left Could be Oh it looks like we can get down to it For a minute there I thought “Oh no Could easily be down there couldn’t it?” Beauty taking us up here We would have missed it if we had just carried on back Who would have yeah there’s an information plaque and we’re hoping the information is going to be on that Okay the information boards in French and as everyone knows we can’t speak French but saying hello and thank you So we’re just doing a Google translate on the part we think has the answer Uh yes it has the answer Yes Okay Yes Let’s put it in And what a neat view here So what we got to do is go and have dinner Woohoo Which is a little way off It’s 4:00 and we booked in for 6:00 Okay here’s our restaurant which overlooks the castle or the chateau [Applause] It’s from a local brewery It’s made using local barley The name refers to the rudder of the flat bottom L boat Cheers Cheers Nice on a hot summer’s evening Surprisingly we weren’t that hungry We had a few sharing things off the [Music] menu Lovely view from our table The area around the shadow looked a little different in medieval times only missed seeing it by some 500 years
