French Markets, Saint-Rémy & Château d’Estoublon: A Slow Day in Provence | Simply Slow Traveler

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the beautiful
Provence, a region that I so much love and where I have been spending a few days during
the week of my birthday for the past few years. This year, I rented a small apartment right in the
heart of the beautiful city of Aix-en-Provence, overlooking the iconic Place Richelme, that
bursts into life every early morning with its market filled with all sorts of fruits,
vegetables, and typical Provençal produce. While the market was right at my doorstep, I went just for a quick browse. The best day
to visit the markets in Aix is on Saturday, when they have the most vendors. On
Sundays, the best market in the region is in the unique town of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue,
and that was our main plan for the morning. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is this picturesque village
surrounded by two branches of the river Sorgue, with crystal clear waters where vibrant water
plants dance to the slow rhythm of the currents. In the heart of the town, however, the Sunday
mornings rhythm is much more energetic, with stalls laid out across the
squares and streets surrounding the Church and by the river canals,
selling everything you can imagine. One of the highlights of the Sunday
market at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and one of my favourite sections,
is the vast Brocante market, located in the south quays of the town.
Here, you will find such beautiful vintage furniture pieces, decoration items,
and unique utensils and artifacts. The market starts at 6am every Sunday, and
the stalls are open all the way until 2pm. As lunch time rolls around, people start filling
up the restaurant terraces that are stuck between the market stalls and the river canal, and that
was precisely what we did as well, admiring the beautiful landscape and the buzz of the last
couple of hours of yet another market day. For the afternoon, we went spending a few slow hours in one of my favourite towns
in the area: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Saint-Rémy is just 30 minutes
away from L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and it is a picturesque flat town with
cobbled streets, cream-toned façades with colourful pastel shutters, and a lot of
beautiful boutiques selling local products, some of them very traditional of Provence.
I always love spending a couple of hours browsing the stores and strolling through
its narrow streets and picturesque squares. To end this beautiful Provençal Sunday,
we went for dinner at Château d’Estoublon, an historical vast property
surrounded by vineyards and olive groves on the south side
of the Alpilles mountain range. The restaurant La Table d’Estoublon
is located right by the Château, in a courtyard area surrounded
by the greenery of ancient trees, bushes and ivies crawling
up the thick stone walls. Over a slow dinner with live music
and a beautifully cooked and presented sophisticated French cuisine, we spent a
few hours until well after the sun had set, making this a perfect way to finish
a dreamy Summer day in Provence. Thank you for coming with me on
a quintessential Summer Sunday in Provence. If you are not yet, make
