Temperature: 18°C / 63°F Mont Saint-Michel has been one of France’s most iconic landmarks for over 1,000 years. This tidal island sits off the coast of Normandy, surrounded by dramatic shifting sands and sea. In medieval times, pilgrims risked quicksand and tides to reach the abbey. Today, a modern bridge connects the mainland. The narrow cobbled streets once welcomed pilgrims. Now, they’re filled with small shops and inns. Friendly reminder, it didn’t seem to be faster to purchase your tickets in advance online ha! There were unfortunately a very long queue for pre-booked tickets… and just when we were able to enter, it started raining! Definitely dress for all kinds of weather in September with umbrellas / ponchos The abbey’s origins date back to the year 708, when Bishop Aubert built the first church after a vision of Archangel Michael. Legends say the archangel demanded obedience three times—leaving Aubert with a mark on his skull. While we were here hiding from the rain, there was a moon which was part of the ‘Rêve de Lune’ installation. Every summer, visitors can discover Mont Saint Michelle differently (at night) And voila, here’s that famous metal horse from Paris 2024 Olympic Games Mont Saint-Michel has inspired artists, writers, and even Olympic events. In 2024, it was part of the equestrian route. The Gothic cloister was a place of meditation for Benedictine monks who lived here for centuries. These massive columns were built to support the abbey church, standing as early feats of medieval engineering. This giant wheel was used by prisoners to haul supplies up from the base using manpower alone. In this room, you are able to see miniature versions of Mont Saint Michel’s history I can’t believe it was once a small chapel up the hill. During the French Revolution, the abbey was closed and even used as a prison before restoration. Today, Mont Saint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing millions of visitors each year.
