To be clear, I don’t mean it’s something where you go camping and say “yeah I brought my leatherman and that’s literally it”

I mean more is like a backup of well. I’m gonna go for a little quick weekend road trip and I’ll just bring a couple things in my Leatherman signal just in case I need it. Would it be good? It’s like a back up kind of survival tool?

    1. I still dont really understand what you mean.

What scenarios would any of the tools on a leatherman be required in a “survival” situation.

To survive you need shelter, water and assuming you’re in a “survival” situation long enough food.

Sure. It’s common to carry a multitool. For me, it’s a SAK (Victorinox Huntsman), for others it’s a Leatherman.

Barely a trip goes by where I don’t use it for one reason or another. I also carry a full tang knife and a Silky saw.

Add one to your equipment, you won’t regret it.

    3. Mine was a neat gromsman gift. I don’t actually use it or carry it though when camping. I take my skeletool with me in an EDC way, and have my p4 as a backup in a bag. But.. Silky saws, good fire starter and a shelter setup are way more useful.

All this to say… If I’m using this thing’s flint or its saw… I’m having a really bad time already.

Get it because you want it, don’t trick yourself into thinking you need it. And – that’s okay –

    4. I mean you obviously can do some parts of the “survival” that include using a knife or other accessories it has. Not sure what is the question exactly.

    5. As a survival tool, can’t really vouch for it. However, I’ll say that I bought my first Signal 5 years ago. I lost that one last year on a run and ended up buying another signal. I love it. I’ve started fires with it, shaved wood to make kindling, and used the hammer extensively. Are there other knives that are better suited for some sort of survival? Sure. But at that point, I don’t think a multi-tool is what you’re looking for. I bought a signal because I wanted 1 multi -tool that could do everything I needed to do when I went camping/backpacking. The added bits like a Philips/flathead driver has helped me with some pots and stoves in the backcountry. Everything else on it has gotten regular use for me. Every morning before I walk out the door I check for keys, wallet, phone, and my Signal.

This question is better suited in r/Survival or r/Bushcraft I do keep on in the ute though, and it’s handy.
