How to do a Berlin Christmas Market City Break | Guide to Europe Xmas Markets

When you think of Christmas markets in Europe, you’re probably thinking of Germany. Germany is famous for some of the most iconic and traditional Christmas markets, and the country’s capital, Berlin, is no exception. I’m Miranda from EasyJet Holidays, and I’m going to be taking you on a short Christmas market city break in Berlin, giving you a recommendation for a hotel you could stay at, and show you just a taste of the markets on offer. Join me, India, and Ram on a festive getaway to Germany’s historic capital. Berlin airport is approximately 45 minutes away from the city center by public transport. The ticket cost around €8 each, and the trains are pretty frequent. For our Berlin Christmas Market trip, we stayed at the Catalonia Berlin Mitter Hotel. This hotel is tucked away in its own courtyard and has a real industrial feel. The building has been through a few different personalities in its time, from a tie factory to a jewelry workshop and now a hotel. If you book bed and breakfast, you can enjoy it buffet style as well as eggs cooked to order. There’s also an open bar area where you can grab a drink or some food. The best part about this hotel is its location. It’s right next to the Heinrich Hine Metro Station and it’s just a 20inut walk from many of the sites and markets that you might be interested in seeing during your stay. Now we’re all settled in. Let’s head to the markets. The first market we headed to was the market at Rotten Ral House. This market is absolutely huge and it takes place outside the old city hall and it’s free to enter. This is a proper winter wonderland and it has everything you could want from a Christmas market. You could spend an entire day here if you wanted to and trust me, we nearly did. There are stools of plenty selling food and gifts. And I’ve never seen so many beautiful Christmas decorations for sale in my life. The huge ferris wheel is a great spot to get a view over the market. And there’s also some other rides here, including a carousel. The Neptune fountain at the center of the square has been turned into an ice skating rink. And three times a day, Santa Claus can be seen flying over the market in his sleigh. This is also a good spot to start your Glueine souvenir mug collection should you wish to. For the uninitiated, when you purchase a mold wine or similar at most of the markets in Berlin, you’ll pay a deposit for the mug, which usually has some kind of cute design on it. When you’re done with your drink, you can either return the mug to get your deposit back, or you can keep it as a souvenir from your trip. Next up, on Museum Island, just opposite the Berlin Cathedral, you’ll find the Christmas Market at Schllo Plats. This market is free to enter and it has two distinct areas. There are rides out front and then inside the square, it’s like a little fairy tale village. There’s a wide range of drinks available here, including various varieties of mold wine, and of course, another opportunity to grab a cute souvenir mug. There were also stalls selling gorgeous gifts and a few cute photo opportunities. I personally loved how hidden away this market felt. It was very cozy and Christmy. [Music] As the sun began to set, we headed to the Wat Sala Market at Babel Plats. This one requires a €2 entrance fee. A word to the wise, it’s worth having a bit of cash on you during your Christmas market adventures. As some markets, like this one, are still primarily cashbased. This beautifully designed market has lots of stalls and food stands packed in. You can get hot dogs, pretzels, crepes, and more. It’s particularly beautiful here in the evening. The Christmas lights were some of my favorites. It’s got a mix of outdoors and covered areas, so it’s pretty good in all weathers. Väa Market is particularly popular in the evening. Lots of people gathered here to have a drink or a light dinner, and we even saw some people playing cards over mugs of mold wine. There’s even live music to enjoy. It had a very social atmosphere and was the perfect end to our day in Berlin. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what you can get up to at Christmas in Berlin. There are approximately 70 markets across the city during the festive season, so there’s absolutely something for everyone.
