Hey everybody, this is Eric Clark’s travel videos and I’m here in I don’t even know the town in this little place. I was driving by and there’s a chateau here to see and this is the name of the chateau Montle and I’m sure that’s wrong but it’s a chateau castle fortress church everything above. So let’s take a look at this and it’s amazing. So, here’s the name. But look at the at this castle and church. And the old guy I just talked to said that the cathedral is incredible. Look at this. That is just stellarly crazy. Wow. Wow. I mean, look at look at this right there. I mean, that that’s like picture perfect perfection. And so I don’t know. Let’s go in here and see. Parking was free today, which is good. And it’s a windy nasty. You can see the leaves just blowing all over the place. But oh my gosh, look at that. That is stellar, everybody. This is like this is like fairy tale type uh stuff, you know? This is where uh fairy tales get created. Oh my gosh. Wow. Amazing. Wow. And it’s 12:30. I’ve already passed my time budget, but you know, I’ve visited quite a few little chateau on the way. You know, you see one and you just got to pull over. This isn’t on my list, but uh I would put this in the top of the list. Oh my gosh. Wow. So, I don’t know if the chateau is open today and the church is open. I I I don’t know. I think the chateau is to the left and the church is here. And I’m kind of hoping the church is open. Oh, Collegial Notraam. Montreal Ble. Is that the name of the town? Montreal Ble. Wow. Okay. Well, I don’t think I’m going to have any luck with anything. I think it’s all going to be closed. I think it’s all going to be closed. Son of a crapper. Is there a door around here? No. Oh, it’s not open. Wow. Wow. And it is amazing. Good crap. If you can’t get in it, what’s the point? I’m going to cry. Not open. Oh, it’s open here. Oh, I love you. Thank you. May I see? May I see? Perfect. It’s perfect. Wow. Okay, close the door here. Okay, let’s close that door. No, this. Wow. Wow. Wow. And here’s the church. Amazing. So, here’s the church. Wow. So, this is really cute inside the chateau. Uh, wow. The chateau is not open. I don’t know. Oh, okay. Oh, you guys are here too, guest. Yes. Okay. I’m tourist. Me, too. America, thanks for letting us in. I thought it was closed. Wow. It’s beautiful, huh? Wow. Wow. Okay, I’m going to go look around. I’ll be back. All right. Well, the church was open, so you could see inside the church, but I was more interested too in the chatau itself. And the church is amazing. But the chateau really does look like a a castly type uh thing. just amazingly crazy. And when you pull up, it is just exquisite. Oh, perfect timing. So, that’s the chateau. Wow. Oh, it looks amazing, huh? All right. Well, it doesn’t hurt to go try the door, does it? You might as well. And it’s probably closed today. Um, there’s the chateau over here. Enter the chateau this way. Go to the college this way. or the notam. And what’s it say about Saturdays? I don’t know, but no pushing. Well, darn it. Let’s go around this way. The best I can do is show it to you from the outside. Wow. Wow. Really spectacular place. enough to get me to pull over. I guess that’s a good sign, huh? If you if you’re willing to to pull over off your journey, then you’re you found a good spot. And I like both towers. I wish I could see that other tower over there. But let me go a little further and see what’s down this way. Can you not see around any of this? Uh maybe there’s a fence with holes. Yeah, it’s not going to give me any kind of sight, I don’t think. Nope. You can see it from behind the trees or behind the trees, but you can’t see through the trees. And there’s a tower back there. Well, darn it. Call the caretaker up. We want to see this place. Oh, well. Oh, let me go here and see if I can see the other tower, the top of the tower from here. Oh, you can. Wow. Is that amazing? Wow. Wow. Amazing. I wish I could get inside, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. All right, everybody. It’s closed. Closed. Are we? Yeah. Thanks for coming, everybody. Bye.
The Château de Montreuil-Bellay is a historical building in the town of Montreuil-Bellay, département of Maine-et-Loire, France, first built on the site of a Gallo-Roman village high on a hill on the banks of the Thouet River. It is listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.[1]
During the medieval period the property, consisting of more than 4 km2 (990 acres), was part of a group of 32 villages near-by that created the then known as “L’Anjou”. The Mountreil-Bellay fief, first belonged to Gelduin le Danois afterward by regal heredity passed to Berlay le Vieux who became the first Sir of Bellay, in 1025 the castle was seized by Foulques Nerra a Plantagenet making Giraud Berlay his vassal during the second half of the 12th century. After the defeat of the English by Philip II, the fief returned to a descendant of the Berlay le Vieux family Sir of Bellay, Guillaume de Melun, during this period the fief went under a big renovation by the creation of high massive walls construction including 13 interlocking towers, with entry only via a fortified gateway and the name was anglicized from Barley to Balley.
During the French Wars of Religion (1562–1598) the town of Montreuil-Bellay was ransacked and burned but the sturdy fortress suffered little damage. Ownership of the castle changed several times including, through marriage, to the Cossé-Brissac family. During the French Revolution the castle was seized by the revolutionary government and used as a prison for women suspected of being royalists.
In 1822 the property was acquired by Saumur businessman Adrien Niveleau, who divided the huge property into rental units. In 1860 Niveleau’s daughter undertook occupancy and a major restoration campaign, redoing some of the rooms in the Troubadour style. Descendants of her husband’s nephew are the current owners of the property.
Nowadays, Château de Montreuil-Bellay is also the name of a premium wine made on the property.
