Ultimate One-Day Bamberg Itinerary 🇩🇪 Best Sights & Food in Bamberg, Germany | Bamberg Travel Guide

Welcome to Bombg and we’re going to go explore this beautiful medieval city. Um, a world heritage site that luckily received very little damage during World War II. So, a lot of it is actually intact and original. So, let’s go explore it. Okay, so we just made our stop to the uh the Bombberg uh tourist information office, the visitor information office, and we got our our handy map with the uh key points of interest on there. So, we’ll do a tour from there. And, you know, a lot of good information in there, a lot of nice stuff. They’re selling a lot of articles, souvenirs from Bombberg. Uh so, definitely worth going in there. something that they’re offering, which we are not going to do on this day trip. Uh, but I definitely think it would be something worthwhile, especially if you’re a fan of beer. So, Bombberg has like 14 breweries or 12 breweries. Bamberg has a lot of breweries anyway for for a city this size. And so, you could take a beer tour and you get a little card and for 29.50 50 you get to go to four different breweries and get a free and try beer there and you get a smoked truffle and you also get a really nice beer krug or uh we might call it in the United States a beerstein but a beer mug basically but a real nice mug and it also comes with a wooden cover for that. So really nice and I think for 2950 that’s quite a it’s quite a deal. Like I said we’re not going to do it if we’re going to be here for more than one day we probably would actually though. So, I think it’d definitely be nice for the for beer lovers out there. But, uh, beautiful day here in Bombberg. And, uh, now we’ve got our map. We’re going to go visit some, uh, some of the key points of interest. Right behind me is the image of the city. This beautiful the beautiful Rat House, the town hall building. Um, and quite a story. So, some legend behind this building is I’m not sure how much of this is true, but in the uh the late 1300s, the late 14th century or yeah, the late 14th century, um, the town’s people wanted to build a town hall, but the bishop who who controlled the region wouldn’t give them land to build it. So they took it upon themselves to drive timbers into the river just like the ones used in Venice to build that city and they dug they they put the timbers into the into the river and then they built their town hall on top of that. Now it’s had some additions to it through the years. It has some nice baroque uh facades on on the side as you walk through the bridge area, but the outside is the original timbered frame building. It’s uh just a beautiful building and it really where you got got to start your adventures at here in Bombberg. Standing proudly on one of Bombberg’s seven hills, the Bombberg Cathedral or Bombberger Dome is one of the most striking landmarks in Franconia. This magnificent Roman-esque cathedral was first consecrated in 1237 and has witnessed nearly 800 years of history. Inside you’ll find one of Germany’s most famous sculptures, the mysterious Bombberg Horseman whose true identity remains a mystery. Some believe he represents a king. Others see him as the ideal Christian ruler. Bombay Cathedral is the only church north of the Alps that holds the tomb of a pope. Pope Clement II who died in 1047. His body was transferred to Bombberg from Italy according to his dying wish to be brought to the city that he loved. From the outside, the cathedral’s four soaring towers dominate the skyline, blending romanesque solidity with early Gothic grace. Whether you come for its history, its art, or simply to take in the views over Bombberg’s old town, this cathedral captures the soul of medieval Germany. the beautiful rose garden up behind the cathedral and residence complex here in Bombberg and it gives a great view over the city. But uh pretty spectacular. There’s like 4,500 roses, like thousands of roses and some really nice statues, a nice fountain. It was built in the early 1700s and it’s really a nice place to walk through when you come up and visit the cathedral and then go visit the residence and come out here and stroll through the uh rose garden. It’s a really warm day today. It’s nice and shaded. There’s a nice cafe over to the side. Grab yourself a little refreshment, but just really nice place. Lots of benches and stuff to sit and relax. Really quite beautiful and you really can’t miss it. We just toured the um new residence here in Bombay and it cost €6 per person that included a tour of the residence and then there’s an additional royal hall you can go into in addition to that and then there’s also a nice um art collection there that you can go and look at some very nice paintings. So um was it worth €6? I would say yes. And the tour was nice. Um, uh, the lady spoke German. She also spoke English, so she could help you out if you, if you struggle. There’s also information in English available in each room. So, it was nice. It was impressive. I have to say, though, just a couple weeks ago, we were in Kemp and we we toured the royal residence there. And if I had to compare the two, I would have to say the one in Kemp uh was uh far superior to this one. This one was really nice, but after going to Kemp, we were kind of a little bit let down. We kept waiting for the big um I guess grand finale and it never really came. Um but it is nice and it’s definitely worth €6. So when you’re in Bombberg, come up here and it’s right across from the cathedral and right next to the rose garden. So it’s a nice addition to your tour here when you’re up here looking checking out these things. The alta hul halong or the old court feels like stepping straight onto a movie set and it really is. Filmmakers have long been drawn here. The three musketeers in 2011 and the historical drama Luther in 2003 both used the old court for key scenes. Its authentic medieval architecture also makes it a favorite for German historical dramas and television series, providing the perfect backdrop without needing much attention. The old court was commissioned by Emperor Henry II in 1007 when he founded the Bishop Operric of Bombberg. For centuries, it served as the residence and administrative center of Bombberg’s Prince Bishops until the 17th century when they moved across the street to the grand new residence. The courtyard, framed by half-timbered buildings and stone arcades, feels like a portal back to the Middle Ages, a place where Bambberg’s history still lingers in every corner. St. Michael’s Abbey on top top of Michael’sburg, one of the seven hills of Bamber. Bamberg, like Rome, is built on seven hills. Um, so much of the abbey, the monastery, the beautiful church behind me, is covered in scaffolding and it’s been under construction for the past 14 years. Um, supposed to open in April of 2026. So that’s next April in about nine months, I guess. Um, so anyway, when you come to Mamberg, hopefully it’s open, a little bit of a walk up here, some good exercise. Um, and we’re going to walk around. Supposedly, there’s some beautiful views of the city of Mamberg and some nice gardens. Hopefully, we can see those um while we’re up here, but we’re here for cake and coffee time. They have a really nice cafe inside. Um, so we have some u milk cafe, cafe lattes, and I have a piece of cheesecake, and Betty has a beautiful cake. um chocolate layered with some uh roasted nuts on the side. And are those um blueberries and blackberries on top, I think. So, anyway, it looks really good. So, a nice little stop. They also have wine and beer and they have a nice gift shop in there as well. So, beautiful place and I think next April it’s going to be even nicer. Hopefully, the scaffolding’s down and it would be a really nice place. Definitely worth coming up here. I think it’s worth coming up here anyway, but when the scaffolding comes down, it’s going to be really nice. All right. So, behind me, these beautiful roll of houses right here on the on the river, but um that’s the uh they call it Little Venice area. And I guess these used to be in former times these were fisherman’s houses. Um, it’s it’s really pretty. Nice place to walk along. Doesn’t really remind me too much of Venice. I mean, other than the fact that it’s pretty and it’s on the water, but you can take a gondola ride. There’s actually a gondelier down there giving people a gondola ride. So, I guess it has that in common with Venice. But, uh, really beautiful part here in Bombberg. And of course, you have to you can’t miss it if you’re here. Just walk along this this way here. It’s, uh, not too far from the, uh, the rat house. and uh beautiful and especially on a beautiful sunny day like today, it’s nice and we’re going to go check out they have boat rides. We’re going to go see how much they are and maybe take a boat ride up and down this Okay, so an option you have to do when you’re here in Bombberg is take a river cruise along the Regnit River. Um, so they have this little they have this boat and they start at 10:30 in the morning. The last one is at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. At least today the last one’s at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. They’re €12 per person. And we were going to do it, but we got here and it’s just a few minutes before it leaves and the boat is completely packed and it’s really hot today. I tell you, it’s like I think today’s the last day of summer and we’ve had a lot of cool weather. It’s been rainy and cool, but the last couple days, summer came back with a vengeance. So, it’s really warm. So, I think we’re going to skip it. But, uh, if it weren’t so hot and uh, shade and and there’s no shade on top either. That’s that’s the other thing. I think you’re just going to be with the sun beating down on you on a day like today. So, uh, we were going to do it, but um, if it weren’t quite so sunny or if they had some shade up on top, we would probably do it, but we’re going to skip it today. But just so you know, that’s an option when you you have to do when you’re hand bombing. All right. So, we are at Schlankera and Bombberg and we’re going to have a meal. We’re going to have some more chila. We’re going to have a special treat of Bombber. stuffed onion with I think it’s ground beef some ground ground pork inside. Looks great. We haven’t had that. Can’t wait to try it. But this is a specialty of Bomb smoked beer. R beer and so it’s a little bit like drinking bacon. There’s a flavor to it. And so now this is a real tradition in Bomb. Smoked beer, route beer. And um honestly, it’s not something I would want to drink every day, but uh when you’re here in Bomb, you got to try it. And you know, it’s it’s it’s tasty. I I I I will drink one or two for sure and have our delicious meal. And what a beautiful place. Nice courtyard here. Beautiful outside. One of the top recommended restaurants here in Bombard. And we’re ready for our food. It’s going to be a great meal. And Jumbo. All right. So, our food is here. And look, this looks it looks great. I tell you that cha. And I’ve got sauerkraut. I didn’t get sauerkraut last night. Look how crispy that is. And Betty’s onion thing. She’s got some nice mashed potatoes there. That looks quite tasty. So, I’m going to cut this. All right. Oh, man. Let me cut into this. That is good. I can’t tell you which one’s better, the one I had last night or this one. They’re both really good. Um, the meat is really nice. Very flavorful. I’m going to try a little bit of the sauerkraut here. That’s good stuff. Joyful is I don’t know why they don’t serve it all over Germany, but it’s delicious. I really like it. So, I have my um special bamberg onion dish. So, it has a whole onion that’s been uh emptied out, I think, and filled with um I think pork, bacon, and some spices. It’s delicious. Let me take a bite. There’s a whole strip of bacon right here. It’s almost like meatloaf stepped into an onion and with this really tasty gravy. Let me have this um mashed potatoes with it. M. That’s really creamy mashed potatoes. I think my kids would really love this meal. I um highly recommend it. All right. That’s good. So, Schlinkler, where we were just eating in their where we’re just eating in their courtyard. Um, if you look behind me, there’s like a ton of people on the street. Look how pretty it is from the outside. If you can see that. But so something that’s kind of cool about there is that, um, if the restaurant is full, you can go inside. They have like a little selfservice beer window. You can get a beer and just come right out of here on the street and drink it and then return your glass and you can just drink beer until you get a seat or I guess just drink beer and then till you’re ready to go. But anyway, that’s pretty cool. They have a self-service beer window in there to get your round beer here in Bombber. And it’s a very happening day. There’s like a ton of people out here on the street. I’m not really sure if this is normal Saturday. It wasn’t this busy last time I was here 2 years ago, but it is really hopping today. Here in the heart of Bombberg’s Oldtown stands St. Martins, the city’s only Baroque church built by the Jesuits in the late 1600s. Its graceful facade and ornate interior bring a touch of elegance to medieval Bombberg. A place where light, art, and faith intertwine. Amid the narrow streets and centuries of history, St. Martins feels like a quiet moment of beauty, a reminder of how Bombberg has evolved through the ages, yet still holds on to its timeless soul. So, a great place for ice cream right next to the Rat House is Cafe Bazanzi. It’s right here. Always busy. It’s in a very hightraic area, but the ice cream is really good. And u if you can grab a seat, snag it because it’s always busy. Hard to get a seat. You can get uh ice cream in a cone. Uh but you can’t se sit. You have to take that away with you. They have, you know, the full gamut. They have ice cafe, spaghetti ice, and all kinds of different ice cream dishes. They also have um drinks like ao spritz and things like that. So on a hot day like today, you know, it’s a great time to just to walk by over there and get yourself a nice ice cream at Cafe Basinoni. do it for our day trip here in the beautiful city of Bombberg in uh Franconia in northern Germany. So we came here on a day trip from Nuremberg and we took the train. We used our 58-year-old Deutsland ticket and it took us only about what 40 minutes to get here. Yeah. So it’s a real quick day trip from Nuremberg and uh but I tell you we’ve been here before so we’ve seen most most of this stuff before. I tell you, if you haven’t been here, it deserves at least a a night over, wouldn’t you say? I think so. Yeah. So, get a, you know, get a hotel. There’s some nice hotels here and spend the night. And, uh, I think you’ll be happy you did. There’s plenty of stuff to see and do. And then just to stroll around here in the early morning or in the evening when the light gets low. It’s really nice. It’s really pretty special. So, uh, I think you’d have really have a great time, uh, doing that in in Bombberg. So, uh, any other suggest suggestions, Betty? No. All right. So, just to get here, it’s a beautiful city. Um, and you’ll have a great time. Thanks for joining us. Hope you like this video. You know, if you did, please be sure to hit that thumbs up button. 1. Love Bamberg. Rauch beer "not something I would want to have every day" man… I laughed out loud after you said that! Also great to see and hear Betty. Once a mom always a mom. Any place we go I often think, "oh, the kids would like this (or that)".❤

    2. The wait for your latest video is over, hooray! Thanks for taking me along your trip to Bamberg. You certainly know Germany better than I do. Bamberg has been on my day-/weekend trip bucket list forever but I guess come next May I might be able to finally cross it of. Thanks for another great video!

    3. Another excellent video. You got the essentials down alright. The BAmberger Reiter. The food and the Rauchbier! A kuemmelschnapps would go fine with that beer. I agree that you may not want too many of the smoked beers. But the wines from the region- Franken – are also very good, especially the white, fresh and kind of fizzy. They come in flat round bottles typically for Franconia and are in the shape of the roman water bottle/canteen. They are called Bocksbeutelflasche.

    4. It’s so so so nice seeing Betty in the videos too. Both of you bring so much value with these content. I am so looking forward soon to all your holiday videos 🤗

    5. Hi. Bamberg is a beautiful place. Franconia is the region with the highest density of breweries in all of Germany. So there are alternatives to smoked beer. I am not a big fan of smoked beer… In summer, people stand in front of the Schlenkerla until midnight to enjoy their beer.
I would recomend to look for the St. Gangolf church next time you two visit Bamberg. It is not the most glamorous church there but it is the oldest church in Bamberg. Built in the 11. century. Next time, try booking a guided tour for the evening tour. The night watchmen have a lot of information to share and lots of funny stories. I just don't know if there are english speaking night watchmen available.
By the way, a beautiful video about a beautiful city. I won't mention the franconian cuisine. It's excellent.

    6. 🚶‍♀️Planning a day trip to Bamberg, Germany? In this video, we’ll show you the top things to do in Bamberg, from its stunning old town and famous cathedral to the Little Venice district and Bamberg’s iconic beer culture. 🇩🇪 Have you visited Bamberg? Share your favorite spot in the comments!

    7. Very beautiful! You know I want that stein 😂. We have a kit for smoking drinks. We haven’t used it much. Maybe we should try it on beer sometime.

That food looked delicious. I’ve never thought of stuffed onion. I think I would make it more like a stuffed pepper.

      Great video!

    8. Hello you two! Dark Franconian beer and Franconian Schäufele – heaven! But I think regional should stay regional! I wouldn't want to eat Schäufele in Berlin.

    9. What gorgeous buildings with very cool history. Loved the dish stuffed onion dish Betty had. May try to create a similar adish at home. Bamberg seems like a spectacular place. Thank you for sharing your visit.

    10. Amazing guide! 🇩🇪 Bamberg looks like a truly stunning medieval town. The architecture, streets, and local culture are so charming — definitely adding it to my travel bucket list!

    11. What a wonderful video of one of my favorite cities in Germany. Betty, you look marvelous. It is good seeing you both in the video :).I was stationed in Schweinfurt, just right down the road from Bamberg, and I would visit often, and I still do to this day. I didn't realize that they used the Old Court in the filming of Luther (2003). I have watched that movie a ton of times, and now it is clicking. I will watch Luther (2003) again and intentionally look for the scene. The shanklear looked yummy. I never tried that, but I will next time. :). I know Cafe Bassanese very well, lol. 🙂 Thank you for another great episode of the Travling Expats. :).
