How I Travel To New Countries. Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Expat Retired Minimalist

When it starts getting close to go to the next country, there’s a routine that I go through. There’s a step-by-step process that I make sure I’m ready to enter that country. I’ve had many of you ask me about this. I think it’s time that I explain to you what my procedure is to make sure that I have everything done and ready to go to go to the next country. Well, good morning. We are going to do a little bit different video today. We are here in Bali. I’m absolutely loving my time here in Bali, but we’re getting ready to move on to another country. A lot of the questions that I get in the comment section involve around how I get hotel rooms, how I pack, how I prepare to enter a country as far as visas, everything. And that’s what I’m going to go over in this video. This is sort of a transitional video between two countries. Everything that’s involved, how I buy tickets, um how I prepare for a hotel, um how I look for flights, all of it. I’m going to show all of that to you today. And then we’re going to get ready to leave this beautiful country of Bali. And so that’s what we’re going over. And I hope that it’s going to be useful to you if you’re thinking about this lifestyle, if you’re thinking about traveling full-time the way that I do. Of course, we’re going to get ourselves a good bite to eat. We’re also going to enjoy ourselves here in Bali the last few days before I get on a plane and head out. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m glad you’ve been here with me for it as well. Okay, we’ve got a lot to cover in this video. Let’s go. Traveling the world as a minimalist with one backpack. That is what we do here. Subscribe and come along with Retire and Go. Before I even leave the country, I make sure that I go on the State Department about seven days early and I check to make sure what I need before I enter the next country. I look to see what type of visas I’m going to need, if changes have been made. It doesn’t matter if I’ve even been to that country earlier that year. It doesn’t matter. I go about a week early and I check to see what changes have been made. the State Department website. It’s available on your cell phone and I will go on there to see what exactly as a US citizen I need to get into that country. What changes probably have been made. The next thing that I do is I go on each of those sites. I’ll fill out the arrival cards and I will get a QR code. That QR code I save on my phone and I make sure that I have it. Any payments that I can do, especially like coming in here to Bali, any type of payments that I can do early, I do it so that I have a seamless entry when I get into the new country. I want it to be as easy as possible. There’s a few more things I make sure I do. Another thing that I’ve made sure to do from now on is that I have a follow on flight. And I’m going to show you step by step how I work on flights and how I work on a hotel. I go to Expedia and I will click not just the airport that I want to go to, but I’ll click on exactly the city that I want to go to. It will get me to the nearest airport. But I want to know a hotel that’s actually in my final destination, not just a hotel that’s around the airport. A good example of this is getting into Bangkok or somewhere like that. I want to know where I’m going to end up. When I am going to be flying into a new country, I will search for a flight. I search for the flight on Expedia. Usually, I just like it. It’s a very easy to use platform. And you get like some money back that goes towards your next trip. I I’ve enjoyed it. I haven’t had any problems with Expedia. After I get done booking a flight to the country that I’m going to, it will ask you if you would like to add a hotel. When you do that, what I’ve noticed is that extra hotel that you add in is so cheap, it’s ridiculous. I mean, if I searched for a package deal, the the cost is okay. But when they ask you that question, would you like to add a hotel? That’s when I find my best deals, incredible deals, almost as if the final cost is barely over the cost of the flight. And I’m staying maybe for 2 weeks, 3 weeks, four weeks. It’s crazy. That is how I pay for and book my travel. And once I have that booked, the next thing I make sure is that I have that follow on flight booked as well. And I don’t enter countries anymore without that. And this process has worked really well for me. I’m gonna book something to eat because I’m hungry. This is one of the nicest little spots in Ubud to wander into. I love coming here every time each year. It’s called the Legend and it’s attached to a hotel and it’s the restaurant that faces the street. I really enjoy it. I ordered the Vietnamese rolls which are fresh and delicious. This is a vegetarian dish. Comes with a nice peanut sauce. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. The green detox. This is a mint, ginger, cucumber, and lime smoothie. Basically, it’s absolutely delicious. I love getting this. Each of these, the Vietnamese rolls and the green detox, they’re both 35,000 rupia. I have found staying here in Bali to be very affordable. And I tell you, the logistics of getting here, getting into the country is a little more complicated than other countries, but you just take care of it 72 hours before you get here. And that’s what this whole video is about. Another thing that I’ll do before I leave is I make sure I get laundry done. Now, you know that usually I do my own laundry because I don’t have that much stuff. So, I just wash it in the sink and I’ll use a little packet of soap and hot water from the shower. But every once in a while, I like to do what I call a deep clean. And a deep clean means that I basically take all my clothing except maybe my swim shorts and I’ll take it to the laundry mat and I’ll get it all done. And it’s very professional. Right here, I’ll show you how much it costs and where I went and it works out good. Just one door down from where I’m staying at the Warsaw Bungalows is May May Laundry. This is where they suggested I go. It’s a nice little laundry spot. Not expensive. That’s great. A good feeling to have a full clean laundry. You know, in this little plastic wrap is about everything that I own as far as clothing other than what I have on. That’s the nomad life. Another thing that I’ll work on is at the end of 30 days somewhere, I’ll get a good haircut. My hair grows fast. I mean, it grows. It’s crazy. And I like to get a good haircut done. I’ll show you where I went for that afterwards. It’s been 30 days. I have to make sure that I am well hydrated. That’s why I go grab a Coke Zero so that I’m well hydrated. Before I leave, I like to move a little bit closer to the airport. I’m right now in Ubud. And before I go, I’m going to make sure that I move closer to a hotel that’s by the airport here in Bali. There’s been talk about building a second airport. That’s kind of interesting. I’ll keep an eye on that one. But this is the step-by-step process that I take to book everything to check the state department to make sure that I have up to date what I need before I enter that country. Sometimes you need it before you even go to the airport. And I make sure all that is done. I take care of the things that I need to with myself. Getting myself groomed and cleaned and all my gear washed and ready to go to the next country. That’s step by step how it’s done. I don’t spend a lot of money on this lifestyle. I don’t stay in luxury places. I don’t take expensive flights. I try to take flights that are short and I try to add them together so that in one purchase I’m trying to hit $100 or lower per leg while I’m here in Southeast Asia. And that’s how I prepare to travel between countries. When I’m not filming, I will go to the supermarket to grab food. This is the way that I live. Basically, when I finish my videos for the month, and I’m spending a few days just relaxing. Today, I’m going to pick up some fried chicken. It cost me 65,000 rupia to get four pieces of fried chicken. That’s pretty good. That’s probably like $4 for four pieces of fried chicken. And I love it. I think they do a really good job here. They also have a variety of other food. They’ve got a fruit that you can pick up. They’ve got pre-made sandwiches. They’ve got it all. [Music] This is one way that I keep my cost of living rather low during the month. I usually go out to a meal when I am filming. Otherwise, I’m picking up fruit. I’m picking up cheese. I’m picking up yogurt, bananas. That’s how I’m eating. I will stop at places like the supermarket in any country that I’m at and I will put myself together a meal. Sometimes it’s a meal that I take back to the room. But this is my normal lifestyle. I also finished my book and you know when I travel, another thing I like to have is I like to have a book for lines at the airport. I finished Treasure Island. What a great book that was. A 1954 copy. I just left it at a coffee shop and I will pick up another one at the airport or at a used bookstore. I’ll keep you updated. By the way, I was being observed here by the security in the coffee shop. I think he had his eye on me. I am going to miss these great morning breakfast here at the Warsa Bungalows, but it’s time to pack up and head to the next country. one backpack with just about everything that I own in the world in it. To give you a little gear update, three main shirts, one outfit for airports, and a couple pairs of shorts, and also one exercise shirt. Also, you’ll see that I have the backpack, my laptop, an umbrella, toiletries, some vitamins, and electronics. That’s my life. That’s pretty much everything that I have. I really appreciate the time that you’ve spent with me here in Bali and as we’ve traveled through so much of Southeast Asia together. I want to thank you for spending some time with me today. Today we got a chance to talk about everything that is involved with getting ready to travel to another country. Everything that I do and everything that I’m carrying and how I plan and how I prepare for it. Are you interested in this lifestyle? Traveling the world as a minimalist with one backpack. I was just minding my own business, relaxing on the trail and coming down from the mountain and he saw me, the mad dog of Ubude. Hey there, buddy. How you doing? Huh? What are you up to today? Mad dog right here. Look at this mad dog right here. Yep. He’s a good mad dog, this one. [Laughter] Baldi. I’m still stuck in Bali. TBR Street gang, this is Almighty. Over. TPR Street Gang, this is Almighty standing by. Over. TBR street gang, this is Almighty standing by. [Music] Everybody wanted me to do it. Him most of all. I felt like he was up there waiting for me to take the pain away. He just wanted to go out like a soldier, standing up, not like some poor wasted ragged renegade. Even the jungle wanted him dead. And that’s who he really took his orders from anyway. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat.

    1. You are my idol. I travelled in a similar way in my 20s, it was a fantastic experience. It is amazing how much you don’t miss all the β€œstuff” And when you try and sell it how worthless it is. Cheers

    2. Nice video Chris! I've been to Bali thrice and fallen in love more and more. Ubud looks great as ever. You just ignited my desire to go back there. Hopefully by this year. Cant wait for your next adventure. Be safe!

    3. Hello from CA. Another awful post office experience. Memories of Bali kept me calm. Thanks 4 all the videos of Southeast Asia. Love the people & culture. Selamat Jalan. Sampai bertemu lagi.

    4. Your prior videos when showing the prices of food etc, it would show the local price and on the screen would show in USD, it no longer shows, can you get that back on the screen again??

    5. i'm glad you clarified that on filming days you eat more expensively. i've thought for a while that the numbers didn't add up with the monthly estimates you've given but that explains it.

    6. Hi Chris, I saw from earlier videos, when you go to a new country, you will book 3 nights stay and then negotiate for longer stays (probably with better discounts) if you like the accommodation. So now you will book 30 full days accommodation with flights directly with Expedia, all settled before you fly to the new country? Thanks for making and sharing the videos! Very informative and inspiring!

    7. Aloha my friend, hahahah love the Apocalypse Now movie clips. Enjoyed how you prepare for your next country. I must visit Bali since very near to Kuching. Thank you for the hotel overview of Warsaw in Ubud and Kuta. I am planing to to some scuba diving in Tulamben, Bali next April. Mahalo Chris pleasant travels and looking forward to your next country.

    8. You’re hilarious, Chris πŸ˜‚ thanks to you I’m finally chilling out on hotel choices and finding decent bare bones rooms in Mexico for under $50!

    9. great video with some very useful tips. I don't know if you have talked about this before, but I am curious how decide which actual countries/cities to go to in the first place. I know you went to Thailand for some dental work, but when you dont have a certain agenda like that. I am very curious how you decide.

    10. I've been thinking of making this move and doing what you're doing. I currently have a 720K portfolio in growth, mostly in tech/AI stocks that has grown from an initial investment of 88K about 6 years ago. I was waiting/hoping to hit seven figures and then convert it to income/dividend stocks and ETFs. I'm also a 100% disabled vet and get income from that along with a pension. I'm thinking my income not including social security should be about 7-8K a month. I know people do this on supposedly 1.5-2K a month. I guess it's the trepidation of walking away from a great job and income and taking the leap into the unknown. On paper, I should be set. Did you have initial fear and if so, how did you overcome it and finally take the leap?

    11. Another great and educational video.. Thanks.. You got your seat cushion back from Perama you lost on the way up I see.. Good deal.. I'm headed to Pattaya next week.. Staying in Jomtien Beach for 3 weeks.. Safe travels! It would be great to buy you lunch someday and pick your brain..

    12. A new place which I’ve become actually obsessed with is Pizza Cult in Ubud. Amazing food, great service, such a cute venue and really affordable. Also a great place to bring your laptop and work from!
