Top 6 Day Trips from Valencia, Spain: Hidden Gems You Can’t Miss!
[Music] [Music] today we’re going to take you on a journey through some of the best day trips you can take from Valencia hola chos I’m Paul and I’m baa and this is everything is Bao if you’re living here or just visi these nearby spots will let you experience something different while still being close to home base we are sharing our honest take on some of the most popular and some lesser known destinations around Valencia from paa by the lake to ancient castles and Charming coastal towns we’ve explored them all and we’re excited to tell you about our adventures but before we get started don’t forget to subscribe to our Channel if you love slow travel budget adventures and this covering the life here in Spain we’re here to show you the real side of Spain without any fluff hit that Bell so you never miss a video ah albuera this place holds a special spot in our hearts because we’ve been here multiple times with different friends and each time was a little different our first trip was with two of our friends and we went to this cozy little restaurant called re it’s right by the lake so we had a fantastic View and we ordered the paa valenciana and aroson Mariscos [Music] ba AA rating three out of five stars to us both the dishes were [Music] salty they also offer boat trips around the albuera for Just5 each and lasts 40 [Music] minutes the second time we visited another spot in elal Mar called eler Theon this time we tried the roret which comes with PE seafood and my favorite Aros negro made with Squid Ink incredible flavors from the Aros negro and the restaurant is stucked away from the main touristic areas which made the experience feel even more authentic baa rating for Aros negro for out of five stars very good fishy taste P rating for sorette one out of five stars it was very salty our third visit that one was special we went with a bigger group including some friends of friends and they took us to a rice field literally in the middle of nowhere the cab driver even asked us if we were lost there in what looked like the storage for water pumps they cook paa valenciana for us while we sipped on wine and beer we started with a platter of Hammon and cheese and then we had some valencian tomato salad and steamed [Music] shrimp and then tried Ali which was surprisingly good despite being new to us [Applause] wow paa rating for this one five out of five stars aside from the unlimited drinks and excellent steam shrimp the paa tasted delicious and we even asked for seconds [Music] w after lunch we cruised around the lake and had dessert by the dock it was a wonderful afternoon and we got to see the sunset over the lake the downsides well we were in an authentic Rice Field meaning the toilet situation was also authentic but we expected that because we knew we would be in a farm but the really hairy situation was that we were out in the middle of nowhere and it was getting dark good thing our friend took the cab driver’s number and told him we will call him for our trip back when we finally saw him drive up with the dust flying around the taxi we burst into cheers and Applause fun fact did you know that albuera is the actual birthplace of the famous paa and the traditional paa valenciana is made with rabbit chicken and sometimes snails no Seafood in sight albuera is where it all began and it’s surrounded by vast rice fields making it the perfect spot to try the most authentic version of this iconic dish albuera is just 60 minutes from Valencia you can hop on the local bus EMT l25 from the city center or take a Scenic 20-minute drive if you’ve rented a car or hailed a taxi easy peasy my rating for this entire albuera experience 4.5 stars out of five if you do the boat ride during sunet and eat greata and my rating is a perfect five stars because whatever you do in there is going to be a super authentic [Music] experience next up is sagunto a great little historical town just a short train ride away from Valencia we hopped on the train at estad Del Nord and when we arrived we pretty much just followed the crowd we really didn’t know how to get to the castle but we saw everybody Walking In One Direction so we just did that [Music] [Music] all [Music] [Music] [Music] the walk to the main sites is flat and easy so it’s a great option even if you’re not a fan of hiking the Highlight here is definitely going through the Roman Theater and of course the sagunto castle the castle itself is mostly ruins but it still offers incredible views of the surrounding area and there’s something magical about walking through ancient plots in rubble you’ll also pass through the Jewish quor which adds another layer of History to the experience we didn’t get a chance to visit the sagunto museum which is something we’ll add to our itinerary next time it’s supposed to have some pretty cool artifacts from the Roman era [Music] [Music] ooh [Music] [Music] overall sagunto is a great alternative if you want a mix of history and light hiking but without the crowds you’d find at the bigger tour spots the sagunto castle sits a top of hill that has seen over 2,000 years of History built long before the Roman Empire it was a key stronghold in the wars against Hannibal during the Punic Wars so yeah you’re literally walking through history when you explore the ruins saguto is super accessible from Valencia take a 30-minute train ride from EST Del Norte and once you’re there it’s a nice flat walk through the town to reach the historic sites just follow the signs or the crowd [Music] my rating for sagunto three stars out of five because it’s a cute Village and the hike is very easy and my rating is three out of five stars because it’s a nice long walk and the view from the top is great chtivo was another great day trip for us we visited in early 2022 and masks were still required indoors but it didn’t take away from the experience as we were mostly [Music] outside we started our day at shiva’s Famous restaurant kasal La abuella and ordered their men DEA always a great deal for two coffees half a caraffe of wine and lunch we paid €38 and5 [Music] wow [Music] after lunch we headed towards the tourist center and got a nice booklet of what to see in the city typically there is a shuttle to the castle but it was suspended because it was off seon no worries though we ended up walking through the town visiting the archaeological Museum and the art museum where you’ll find the famous upside down painting of Felipe V 5 that painting alone is worth the visit from there we took a cab up to the shaiva castle €1 well spent and it was incredible and in my opinion larger than the sagunto castle this will sound like an oxy Maron but it’s one of the best preserved castle ruins we’ve seen and it is a hike so be ready to walk a lot I was surprised at how high up we were we could literally see the top of the next Mountain over and the city looked so tiny and so far below us we explored both ends of the castle and found some cool hidden spots like the old toilets overlooking the city and the prison that was super dark and creepy we even got a souvenir photo and souvenir book we missed the al- mudin which is an old Grain Exchange building and Museum but that’s on our list for the next visit overall shaiva is an awesome mix of history art and a bit of exercise shiva’s claim to fame is more than just its stunning Castle this town is the birthplace of Pope Alexander I 6 AKA Rodrigo boria one of the most controversial and Powerful popes in history if you’re into juy history shaiva has plenty of tales to tell especially if you’re familiar with the boura family Le Infamous reputation shaiva is about 50 minutes from Valencia by train once you’ve arrived at the station you can either walk according to the local it’s only about 30 minutes uphill but we don’t think so because the walk downhill took us 30 minutes a shuttle if it’s operational or a cab straight up to the castle the views alone are worth the trip my rating for shatava Five out of five star s because not only do you get to see the castle and museums but there’s also a nice town with some nightlife and stores and restaurants and my rating is s estas for such a perfect [Music] experience alante was a bit of a whirlwind trip for us since we were just passing through on our way back from andalia it is a Charming Beach city with a lot to offer with the Heart of the City being on the beach itself we stayed the night in a hotel with a rooftop bar that had an amazing view of the Castillo de Santa Barbara [Music] oh my God [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] there was plenty of parking near the beach where we left our car so even though it’s busy during the summer we spent no time looking for a spot after settling in we asked the hotel for restaurant recommendations and they sent us to Monero a spot known for its Tapas we started out with a free appetizer and then we asked them about what drinks we should try and they suggested this good wine and then we tried their crocketts canalone and of course the beef cheeks stew all absolutely delicious after dinner we stopped by Lanette a local ice cream shop where I got blueberry cheesecake and rum and raisin ice cream oh my gosh it was so good it was a perfect end to the night in the morning we walked around the beach area where it was already packed with sun worshippers the coastline is not as wi as Valencia’s beaches so it’s very busy in the summer we didn’t get to explore alikante much but we plan to come back and visit more of the city’s attractions like the castle itself and the famous biget Beach there’s definitely more to see here so a return trip is in the books fun fact perched on a Hilltop overlooking alante Castillo de Santa Barbara is one of the largest medieval fortresses in in Europe it’s seen battles pirate raids and even served as a prison if those walls could talk they have some wild stories I can’t wait to visit that alikante is around 2 hours by car or 3 hours by train from Valencia from the alant train station the castle is just a 10-minute cab ride away or if you want to get your steps in just a 30 minute walk my rating four out of five stars because there’s so much to do between the beach and the city center and we didn’t even have enough time to see the castle so I think you will have a full day in alante and my rating is four stars because we still haven’t explored the city as much as we wanted to but from our first impression even the restaurants seem to have good quality [Music] we headed to kalpan Ala with Bea’s cousin and his friends who liveed nearby galpe was our first stop and it’s a chill little coastal town the boardwalk was filled with restaurants and bars where you can listen to the waves and enjoy the seab breeze [Music] we grab drinks up at the rooftop suitopia Sky Bar which has breathtaking views of the area including the iconic Pon the eat rock formation which was used by ancient Sailors as a landmark for navigation if you’re looking for a relaxed Beach Vibe with great scenery calpe is the place the next day we went to Ala which was equally stunning it’s one of those towns where you feel like you’ve stepped into another world all white walls and cute boutiques owned by local Artisans line the stone pathway leading up to the church and the vistas of the sea [Music] we had lunch at El negro Baria Restaurante and ordered their menu Dela [Music] wine grilled sausages like mortha and Chito andot for the main course and TARTA deeso for dessert [Music] everything was delicious and we were so full and we had a fantastic view of the super Blue [Music] Water it was so breathtaking and inviting that we decided to drive down to the beach the beach in ALA is filled with white Pebbles so bring your aqua socks if you want to go for a swim we loved it there and definitely want to turn over and over and over again did you know that Ernest Hemingway spent time in ALA finding inspiration in its peaceful whitewashed streets and stunning views of the Mediterranean to visit both kalpe and altaa it’s a Scenic 1 and 1 half hour drive from Valencia and between kalpe and altaa is just a short 15 to 20 minute drive so you can easily visit both in one day my rating 5 out of 5 stars because both of them were very interesting to see and felt very different from Valencia and my rating is five stars as well because not only do you Marvel at cpe’s rock formation but ala streets are what they say is similar to Santorini in Greece we haven’t been but just going there I feel like we already have been so I’d highly suggest visiting this place finally let’s talk about pisola if you’re a Game of Thrones fan this place is a mustsee we stopped here on our way back to Valencia from Barcelona and it was a unique experience we parked by the beach and walked up to the peniscula castle but didn’t actually go inside [Music] instead we spent time wandering through the Old Town checking out the little shops and grabbing a drink at a bar overlooking the ocean [Music] the town has a magical feel to it and it’s easy to see why it was chosen as a filming location for such a famous show we bought a fridge magnet as a souvenir and made a mental note to come back for a more in-depth exploration of the castle and maybe stay overnight the restaurants overlooking the water looked so romantic at Sunset fun fact this one’s for the Game of Throne fans parts of pisa’s Old Town and Castle were used as filming locations for the city of mirin in season 6 so if you’ve ever wanted to walk where Daenerys plotted her next move this is the place to be even without the dragons the views are breathtaking [Music] pisula is about an hour and a half from Valencia by car my rating for peniscula 3.5 out of five stars it is beautiful but I feel like it’s a little small and my rating is four stars because Game of Thrones [Music] so there you have it our top recommendations for day trips from Valencia whether you’re into history nature or just want to relax by the coast there’s something for everyone within a short distance from the city we’ve You are failing to mention that the Albufera has been environmentally impacted by the DANA on October 29.
Hello Bea and Paul,
I’ve been following your channel for a while and using it to guide my thoughts on relocating to Valencia. More recently, it also helped me reluctantly decide to not move there—or to Spain.
This week, I happen to find myself visiting your city and can see many of its attractive aspects that you have mentioned in your videos. Thanks for all the information you have been providing over the past year or so. I may also use this latest video to plan a day trip during this visit.
¡Feliz Año!

I loved your list of day trips! The only places from here that I haven't visited yet are Calpe and Altea, but they're now on my bucket list! I absolutely recommend Tarragona and Jijona for your next day trips! Tarragona has a Roman colosseum that contains ruins of a church, Arab baths, and a prison, while Jijona has a turrón museum just north of Alicante. Tarragona is my favorite day trip in Spain to date!
The Albufera explorations reminded me that I know a fantastic local nature guide who can really show you the birds of that area. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
Enjoyable video and very timely for us as we'll be spending 2 weeks in Valencia followed by 2 weeks in Alicante next month. Looking forward to checking out a couple of these places for ourselves and sharing our thoughts on our channel.
Nice video. Wish you would keep the music volume lower. Its too loud relative to your voice.
Hola, great video as always. In June this year I will be in Valencia for two weeks, I would love to go to Albufera with you guys. Seems like so much fun.
The restaurant Brizza on the wall at Peniscola is really good, you passed it filming. Also the Hollywood blockbuster El Cid was filmed there. Nice tips definitely fancy Xativa.
Thank you for featuring these places!
Do you do tours?😄
