It’s time for a new adventure from ride on with friends. Sometimes all you need is two wheels, a good friend, and a road that winds like a ribbon through the landscape. Join us on a six-day motorcycle trip that’s more than just motorcycling—it’s a micro-adventure for the heart and soul through the low mountain ranges of eastern France and southwestern Germany. Our tour started three days ago on the German Wine Route in the Palatinate and took us to the central Vosges Mountains, near Munster. From there, we explored the highlights of the southern Vosges on our motorcycles in a day trip. We’ve now documented almost 40 exciting hotspots on our scouting tour. Thank you all so much! 🙌 Now we finally continue on our tour from the Vosges Mountains through the Rhine plain to the Black Forest to extraordinary sights that not every motorcyclist knows about, but should. Mystical and dreamy at the same time, with lots of curves and fantastic viewpoints await us. Have fun riding along. On the fourth day of riding, it’s time again: put on your helmet, start the engine and get out there to scout the roughly planned 260-kilometer tour into the Black Forest! From Munster, we head over the Col du Firstplan on small, almost secret forest paths down to the Alsace Wine Route – past picturesque wine-growing villages like Gueberschwihr, where the scent of vines and the charm of Alsace fill the air. Then, we follow relaxing country roads to the Canal d’Alsace, where we cross the Rhine on a small bridge – and cruise back to Germany. Beyond Staufen im Breisgau, we finally enter the Black Forest – winding our way towards the Untermünstertal valley. A rustic alpine inn with a view awaits us for lunch, and then we continue over the Feldberg, past famous Black Forest lakes, and finally onto the legendary Black Forest High Road to our destination for the day: Schönwald. The rooster crows in the neighbor’s garden – and wakes us up to the perfect weather above the Münstertal valley. This is how our fourth day of riding on the scouting tour begins – and, to be honest, saying goodbye to the Vosges isn’t all that easy. After a leisurely breakfast, we head back down into the Munster Valley on our packed bikes and on towards Alsace. The sun is shining, the roads are empty – a perfect start to the day! Didi is relaxed – perhaps too relaxed – on the bike 😄. His line in the first few corners could certainly be improved… but hey, it’s still just us, so it’s okay to roll in! We roll through Munster one last time, past the market square, and take a farewell look at the storks. Then we continue towards Soultzbach-les-Bains. From there, the D40 takes us for around 7 kilometers, climbing from 300 m to the Col du Firstplan at 722 m. The Col du Firstplan is a popular Category 2 climb, as road cyclists would say. The Tour de France climbed here as early as 1969 – most recently in 2014. I particularly like this route because it’s away from the busy main route between Munster and Colmar. The D40 has it all: long curves and hairpin bends through dense forest with an average gradient of over 6%. We enjoyed the 20 km drive to the Alsace Wine Route. And if you want to enjoy a special view from Alsace all the way to the Black Forest, Then you should definitely turn off the D40 onto the D1V towards Gueberschwihr. We’re lucky with the weather – bright sunshine and a fantastic view. In the vineyards, the winegrowers are already busy preparing everything for the new season. This is one of the best locations for Alsatian wine, especially for Gewürztraminer, which thrives particularly well in this region. We stop, let the motorcycles rest for a moment, and enjoy the view over the vines and the Rhine Valley in the warm sunshine – simply magnificent. Today there’s no time for a leisurely café au lait here on the pretty market square – we want to arrive at a mountain inn right on time around midday. So we continue east towards the Rhine. I show Didi some really beautiful, small roads through Alsace today – and to finish off, there’s something special: we cross the border into Germany over the small Rhine bridge near Fessenheim. Before we continue, we take a short break at the Fessenheim run-of-river power plant – directly on the Rhine Lateral Canal, the Grand Canal d’Alsace. Just one kilometer from the German border. A controversial nuclear power plant used to stand here, which was finally shut down and demolished in 2020. Today, a road crosses the canal and the Rhine at this very spot, connecting Fessenheim with Hartheim am Rhein. The drive from the Vosges to the Black Forest may not be the most spectacular, but it has its own charm – especially if you stop off at a few charming wine towns like Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, or Colmar along the way and treat yourself to a glass of wine. However, if you prefer a quick pace and don’t want to sit in traffic jams on the highway or at the major border crossings, this route is perfect. We’ve barely crossed the Rhine when the first rolling hills of the Black Forest appear on the horizon. We leave the Rhine Valley, about 25 kilometers south of Freiburg near Staufen, and roll into the beautiful Münstertal valley in the southern Black Forest. After just a few kilometers, the valley opens up – rolling hills, dense forests, and small Black Forest farms characterize the landscape. The Münstertal valley stretches from the Rhine Valley in the west up to the mighty Belchen, at 1,414 meters, one of the most striking peaks in the Black Forest. From up there, you have a breathtaking view down into the valley and far beyond the green heights of the Black Forest – a true highlight of any tour. After a few magnificent bends, we turn right – our destination: the Kälbelescheuer alpine inn. A household name among locals, but a real insider tip for many motorcyclists who aren’t yet so familiar with the Black Forest. A picture-perfect alpine hut: a rustic, family-run pub with a tiled stove, a cozy beer garden, and hearty home-cooked food. And then there’s this view – far down to the Rhine plain. Simply fantastic! The Kälbelescheuer is a special place in the Black Forest High Forest. Hikers, mountain bikers, and, of course, motorcyclists meet here to take a break, catch their breath, and enjoy the view. The road up is paved, easy to ride, and worth it for the panorama alone. The view of the Rhine Valley is magnificent, the blueberry pie legendary, and the snacks – down-to-earth, honest, and truly good. And for those who love schnitzel: The Kälbelescheuer is said to have the best schnitzel west of Moscow – or so they say. On sunny weekends, it can get really lively up here. Sometimes you need a bit of patience to snag a seat on the popular terrace. After a hearty lunch and an ice-cold, non-alcoholic drink, we lean back on the terrace and enjoy the magnificent view over the Rhine plain. Today we’re in luck – there are hardly any hikers around, and we’re the only motorcyclists up here. The peace, the sun, the view – simply perfect. But sitting for long isn’t for us – the next stop is calling! I have a very special tip for our dessert. But, as the saying goes: First business, then pleasure. So let’s start the engines again and roll Further into the depths of the Southern Black Forest – via Zell im Wiesental into the romantic Wehra Valley to Todtmoos, and further via St. Blasien down to Todtnau. A route full of curves, viewpoints, and pure riding pleasure – exactly what a biker loves. Curves, sun, freedom – sometimes everything just comes together. The road winds through lush greenery, the wind plays with your jacket, and the sun warms the asphalt. No traffic, no rush, just pure riding pleasure. We could be there in eleven kilometers – but why should we? The day is too beautiful to shorten. So we take the long route, drifting, enjoying every curve, every moment. Because that’s exactly what motorcycling is all about – not the arrival, but the journey there. The area here has so much more to offer – every curve, every view tells its own story. As an alternative to our accommodation, you could also stay overnight in Sankt Blasien. This traditional holiday resort is a true gem: a climatic health resort that has attracted visitors for generations. The St. Blasien Cathedral also rises majestically – with its enormous dome, the third largest in Europe. A building that inspires awe. And just a few kilometers further, the rushing waters of the Menzenschwand Waterfalls – a romantic natural spectacle that won’t soon be forgotten. But today our priorities are different. This tour is intended for scouting – for discovery, for testing, for dreaming. Our destination: one of the best ice cream parlors in the region, known for its legendary spaghetti ice cream in all its variations. A sweet reward awaits in Todtnau before we climb the legendary Feldberg – the crown of the Black Forest. A day full of enjoyment, adventure, and passion on two wheels. Simply – Ride on with Friends. Thus, our last stop of the day. The parking space right in front of the ice cream parlor has been reserved for us. Ciao, Due Spaghetti Eis, per favore, grazie. I’d love to be on a lounger in the sun right now, but we’re continuing up to the Feldberg and, via a few detours, to the hotel in Schönwald. At 1,493 meters, the Feldberg is the highest peak in the Black Forest and, in clear weather, offers breathtaking panoramic views – with a bit of luck, even as far as Mont Blanc! We ‘re taking on the Feldberg Pass, which, at 1,233 meters and with a gradient of up to 22%, is the second-highest road pass in Germany. The route over the pass is captivating with its sweeping road layout and magnificent curves – perfect for enjoying the ride. Open fields alternate with dense forests on both sides of the mountain – typical of the Black Forest! Although the pass road is an important connection and has been well-developed, it has retained its own unique character. The views, the curves, and the landscape make it a real highlight for motorcyclists. The Feldberg and its surroundings are always worth a tour – especially for connoisseurs who love nature, views, and good curves. And if you fancy a break after the ride, you’ll find numerous cozy restaurants offering the perfect culinary roundoff to your day. After the Feldberg, we take a lovely loop, rolling past the idyllic Windgfallweiher pond before reaching Schluchsee – the largest lake in the Black Forest. It lies at an altitude of 930 meters in the heart of the High Black Forest, measures approximately 7.5 kilometers in length and up to 1.5 kilometers in width. Currently, the water level is somewhat lower than usual – the reason for this is necessary maintenance work on the Rhine Valley tunnel. The unusually dry last few months have also meant that less water is flowing in than usual. Nevertheless, Schluchsee remains a real eye-catcher – perfect for a short break or a nice photo. This time, however, we’ll leave it to the right and move on to the next familiar body of water: Lake Titisee. While Schluchsee is a reservoir, Lake Titisee is considered the largest natural lake in the Black Forest – formed during the last Ice Age as a classic glacial lake with a striking terminal moraine. It is located at an altitude of about 850 meters, It measures approximately 2 kilometers in length, just under 1 kilometer in width, and is about 40 meters deep at its deepest point. Today, Lake Titisee is a real visitor magnet: in summer, it’s bustling with boats and lots of swimmers. We now head directly north – via Furtwangen up onto the legendary Black Forest High Road B500. Destination for the day: our motorcycle hotel in Kaltenbach near Schönwald. The day was long and packed with impressions – countless curves, stunning views, and that typical Black Forest flow. You can slowly feel it in your arms – time to take off your helmet and enjoy. We’re staying at the Hotel Kaltenbach for two nights. Half board is booked, and the best part: everything here is designed for motorcyclists. After a day on the bike, the pool and wellness area await – perfect for unwinding. The hotel is also pleasantly quiet, away from the traffic of the Black Forest High Road. We end the day comfortably with a beer called Stiefel, a really good dinner, and a cream puff for dessert. The tour briefing for tomorrow is still pending – and of course, we’re hoping for sunshine, clear views, and empty roads again. On the fifth day of riding, it’s time again: hop on the bike and head off into the winding adventure! We’re not here for fun, after all. From the Hotel Kaltenbach, we set off on a dream tour of around 200 kilometers through the central Black Forest. Everything that makes a biker’s heart beat faster awaits us here: narrow forest roads, endless curves, the rushing of mountain streams, and the scent of fir trees. An absolute highlight is the Brandenkopf, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Black Forest – perfect for a quick stop with a wow factor. And of course, the legendary Hexenlochmühle mill is not to be missed – a place that looks like it stepped straight out of a Black Forest fairytale. In between all this: pure riding pleasure, secluded valleys, small villages, and plenty of moments you just have to savor. Let’s go. Today the weather is perfect – blue skies, pure sunshine! I’m already drawn out at seven o’clock: a short walk around the hotel, morning sun, fresh air, pure peace and quiet. Didi is already awake, of course – coffee is calling, and immediately it’s time again: put on your helmet, start the engine, and off to the Black Forest! Our first stop: one of the world’s largest cuckoo clocks near Triberg! Triberg, by the way, is not only home to Germany’s highest waterfalls , but also to that authentic Black Forest feeling – craftsmanship, history, and nature all combined in one place. A perfect stop on our tour! But today, unfortunately, the world’s largest cuckoo clock in Schonach near Triberg is closed for maintenance – no big deal! Tomorrow, the next superlative clock awaits us. The fact that there are several “world’s largest cuckoo clocks” here is due to the competition between the clockmakers: After the clockmaker Dold had the idea, everyone wanted to build the largest and most beautiful clock, as big as a Black Forest house. We continue on the L109 – into the beautiful Elz Valley. We follow the road north, past green meadows, old Black Forest farms, and magnificent curves—just the way we like it! Near Oberprechtal, we turn onto the L107 panoramic road—a true highlight for connoisseurs. Didi radios in: “We’re about to stop for photos—amazing views all the way to the Kinzig Valley!” So, flash the indicators, stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and let your gaze wander—moments that make every tour unforgettable.
