Once the kitchen garden of Westminster Abbey, Covent Garden was redesigned in the 1630s by Inigo Jones as London’s first elegant piazza. By the 18th century, it had grown into a bustling market filled with traders, flowers, and lively theatre crowds. When the market moved in 1974, the area was restored and reopened in 1980 as a stylish mix of shops, cafés and performers. Covent Garden’s street artists must audition for a license, keeping its performance tradition world-class. The Lyceum Theatre was first built in 1834 on Wellington Street, becoming one of London’s grandest venues for plays, concerts, and operas. In the late 19th century, it gained fame under actor-manager Henry Irving and his leading lady Ellen Terry, who transformed it into a symbol of Victorian theatre. After several closures and rebuilds, the Lyceum was fully restored in the 1990s, regaining its historic façade and grandeur. Since 1999, it has been home to Disney’s The Lion King, one of the West End’s longest-running and most beloved shows. St Paul’s Cathedral was built after the Great Fire of London in 1666, designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a masterpiece of English Baroque. Its iconic dome—one of the largest in the world—symbolizes London’s skyline and was inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The cathedral has hosted royal weddings, national funerals, and celebrations, including Winston Churchill’s memorial and the Queen’s Jubilee. Inside the dome is the Whispering Gallery, where even the softest whisper can be heard clearly on the opposite side. The Millennium Bridge opened in June 2000 as London’s first new pedestrian bridge across the Thames in over a century. Opened in 2000, the Millennium Bridge was built to celebrate the new millennium as a pedestrian link between St Paul’s Cathedral and Tate Modern. Designed by Sir Norman Foster and engineers Arup, it features a sleek, steel suspension structure nicknamed the “blade of light. It appears in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where it dramatically collapses over the Thames. Borough Market dates back over 1,000 years, making it one of London’s oldest and most historic food markets. Located by London Bridge, it became a vital trading spot for fruits, vegetables, and imported goods during the 18th and 19th centuries. After a decline mid-century, it was revived in the 1990s as a gourmet destination showcasing artisan and international foods. Borough Market appeared in films like Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Leaky Cauldron’s entrance was filmed there! Completed in 1894, Tower Bridge was built to ease road traffic across the Thames while allowing tall ships to pass through. It combines bascule and suspension bridge technology, with two neo-Gothic towers inspired by the nearby Tower of London. The bridge’s roadways still lift several times a day for river traffic, powered today by a modern electro-hydraulic system. Many visitors mistake it for London Bridge, which actually sits just a short walk upstream! In 1952, a London bus famously jumped across the gap when Tower Bridge began to lift unexpectedly—its driver, Albert Gunton, received a medal for bravery and £10 as a reward!
