Visit Albania
Tirana has undergone significant transformation since the fall of its Communist regime in 1992, evolving into one of Europe’s fastest-developing urban centers.
The city’s population is approximately 526,017 in the urban area and 800,986 in the metropolitan area, with the municipality having a population of 598,176.
The city’s economy is driven by manufacturing, telecommunications, and finance, and it is home to the Nënë Tereza International Airport, which serves 99 destinations across Europe, Turkey, North Africa, and the Middle East through 29 airlines.
Tirana has a Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and warm summers, with over 2,500 hours of sunshine annually, making it one of Europe’s sunniest capitals.
Key landmarks include Skanderbeg Square, the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the National History Museum, the Peace Bell made from old cartridge shells, and the 1830 Sahat-Kulla (Clock Tower).
The city is also known for its lively cultural scene, with regular art exhibitions, music and film festivals, and theatrical performances, particularly in the Bllok neighborhood, which was once the residence of communist leaders.
Despite challenges such as traffic congestion and pollution from rapid urbanization, Tirana continues to modernize, with ongoing urban renewal projects transforming its appearance.
The city is also a gateway to exploring Albania’s culture and history, with nearby attractions like Mount Dajti, accessible by cable car for panoramic views.
