Living with a Local Family in Dalat, Vietnam with Workaway (Part 5) #workaway #vietnam #solotravel
This next work away will always hold a special place in my heart. So much so that I actually visited three times. In the mountain town of Dat, a local family had transformed their home into a guest house and cafe. My days were spent helping guests explore the area, and every other evening, we’d all gather for a traditional Vietnamese barbecue. It felt more like a family gathering than an actual job. The hosts, Fuk and Van, welcome me in as one of their own, cooking me delicious homemade meals and teaching me real Vietnamese culture. They had a little boy named Muka who I loved spending time with. And during my first visit, Van was pregnant with their daughter. On my next trip back, I finally got to meet her. And by my third visit, I watched both kids growing up right before my eyes. But the biggest surprise from this work away was learning how to ride a motorbike. Not only did they rent out bikes to guest, they also helped me buy my very first one. And that moment reshaped how I travel and volunteer, setting the stage for all my overland journeys. In my next video, I had to head back to Europe. I wasn’t sure if I would continue work away until I found a very unique
This Workaway will always hold a special place in my heart—so much that I actually returned three times. In the mountain town of Da Lat, I stayed with a local family who turned their home into a small guesthouse and café. My days were spent helping guests explore the area, and in the evenings we’d all gather for traditional Vietnamese barbecues that felt more like family dinners than work.

Phuc and Van, the hosts, welcomed me like one of their own. They cooked incredible homemade meals, shared stories about real Vietnamese life, and even introduced me to their growing family. Their son, Mooka, quickly became my little buddy, and on my second visit, I finally got to meet their newborn daughter. By the third visit, both kids were running around the house—it truly felt like coming home.
But the biggest surprise was learning to ride a motorbike. They not only rented bikes to guests but also helped me buy my very first one, changing the way I travel forever.
This experience shaped everything that came next in my journey. In the next video, I return to Europe—and stumble upon one of the most unique Workaways I’ve ever found.
