Located in Normandy, France, Mont Saint-Michel is a medieval abbey built on a granite rock in the middle of the sea. At low tide, you can walk across sand as if you’re crossing a biblical desert. The abbey rises like a stone dream from the Middle Ages. It took centuries of engineering miracles: anchoring foundations into granite, climbing staircases cut into cliffs, and lifting heavy stone with human-powered treadmills (massive wooden wheels that monks and prisoners walked inside like human hamsters). Beneath the church lie inverted crypts that support the entire structure—proof that medieval builders solved problems modern engineers still admire.

Over its 1,300-year lifespan, Mont Saint-Michel has been an abbey, fortress, royal stronghold, and even a prison during the French Revolution. Imagine the isolation—stone walls, salt air, violent tides—earning it the nickname: “The Bastille of the Sea.”
