Austria’s Railjet Is Now Even Better!
Good morning folks, and welcome to a new video where today we will discover the new interior of the first-generation Railjet! Railjet is the brand for express and long-distance day trains operated by the Austrian state railway. The brand was introduced back in 2008. For these new services, ÖBB launched new trains produced by Siemens. The trains have been operated non-stop since 2008 and grew in popularity in Austria but also in neighboring countries. Newer generations of trains are now in service (Railjet 2) and more will come soon (Railjet 3). Since these trains are now almost 20 years old, a mid-life overhaul was long overdue! ÖBB presented its first Railjet with a new interior. The refurbishment program started last year and should continue until 2031 (!!). By then, all 60 trainsets will be completed. By the way, this first trainset will be used on the new Koralmbahn line that will open in December 2025. Alright, let’s see! As far as I understood from the press conference, this is mainly an interior overhaul; nothing major has been changed mechanically. I can tell that they’ve changed the carpet and added wood paneling to match the existing Nightjet and Railjet fleet. Alright, this is the second class (called Economy). The first impression is positive — it’s not groundbreaking, but it definitely looks better. I will show you later a comparison with the newer and older generations. If you want to see a trip report, of course, feel free to do so! The seat pitch seems to be better, but since ÖBB didn’t mention any increase in capacity, I’d say it’s a better seat design that feels roomier for the passenger. The back of the seat gives me intense FlixTrain vibes. Maybe it’s the same manufacturer. Small but very sturdy table. The seat is quite hard but still comfier than the second generation of Railjet. Each seat is equipped with two power outlets and two USB-C outlets. The table doesn’t seem to have changed. Honestly, not a revolution. The interior is still very similar to the old one, just more refreshed and of course more aligned with ÖBB branding. As promised, here’s a comparison video. Wood paneling and dots with mountains — just like on the Nightjet and Railjet. I’m curious about your opinion, folks, so far. What do you think? More surprises are coming ahead. Let me know in the comments below. We’re arriving at the restaurant section — something that every Railjet has onboard. Well, apart from the seating material, I don’t see anything different! Same layout as the old one (which is not necessarily a bad thing when we see the restaurant area on the Railjet 2). Let’s move to the first-class section of the train. And here I immediately saw the difference in the seats. I was never a fan of the old seats on the first generation of Railjet. This is the section for passengers with disabilities. I will show you more of the first class in a second, but so far I’m very pleased with what I see. Ahah, I love that they’ve kept the cool landscape sticker on the inside. It feels very… wild, ahah. That’s the first time I’m seeing it — there used to be only a button on the original Railjet, but here they’ve added a motion detector on top of it. And it worked perfectly! Good job. Let’s go back to our first-class topic! Yup, as expected, the first class is where we see the biggest difference (just like on the Railjet 2, by the way). From experience, I can see that this is definitely larger and comfier than the old one. Just like in second class, it feels roomier, probably due to the seat design itself. It has a larger table than second class/Economy, and it can extend to better accommodate a laptop. And just like on the Railjet 2, there’s a little tray to watch some content on your phone or tablet. I love this privacy blocker! No more weirdos watching what you’re doing from behind! The seat is by far more comfortable than the original fleet. It’s large and comfy, and it can slightly recline in two different positions. Each seat is equipped with one power outlet and two USB-C. That’s excellent! Here are the three seating positions of the seat. Of course, some countries might laugh about this “recline,” but it’s better than nothing and it gets the job done. Just like on the Railjet 2, this is where we see the biggest improvement in comfort onboard. I’m very happy about it! Let’s see how the solo seat compares with… Still, the Railjet 2 takes the crown as best first class within the ÖBB fleet, but this one is still good! Here’s a refresher for comparison. Let’s move to the front section of the train, where there’s still a small first-class section. And the most prestigious accommodation onboard: the Business Class. This is where they’ve changed the least in this refurbishment, and I’m so glad they didn’t change much. When we see how awful the Business Class is on the Railjet 2… They’ve just refreshed the seat and kept all the rest, and I’m so happy they did so. Great recline and awesome comfort. I tell you folks, going through the snowy Alps and enjoying a coffee here is the ultimate peak of transportation. The table remains the same too. By the way, you can find these on Executive Class on the older generation of Frecciarossa — these are the exact same seats. And just for fun, here’s a little refresher. Alright folks, that’s it for this little video about the new first-generation Railjet. To me it’s great — they kept what worked well, and improved what could be improved, which is the first class. I will do my best to be on the first ride in December on the magnificent Koralmbahn! In the meantime, I want to thank you for coming with me today, and I’ll see you next week for another adventure on the rails!
Servus!
Last week, ÖBB presented the first fully refurbished Railjet of first generation ? Is it an upgrade or a downgrade ? Let’s find out 👀

Nice Train
👏👏👏
2:25 It is the same seat model as in the Flixtrain
did you take part in the early morning press event? I visited the train later and it was so full of people I didn't even get into the business class
Nice refurbishments. Comfy seats. Brighter colors. Inviting business class. Thanks Thibault for your review.😋
Economy seats look meh, not as good as the Brightline, VIA, or Amtrak Venture coach seats as much as some people complain about those! Overall though, looks nice!
A shame the onboard café wasn't open yet. Would've been nice to at least be welcomed with a cup of coffee ☕
07:08 God forbid a man has a hobby
Please make videos of Amtrak Mardi Gras and DART silver line!
09:56 Worst seating in business class. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to open the doors sideways instead of the sliding doors? Now that person sitting there, who will pay a ton of money to be in business class, will have the extra amenity of having a door shoved against near their face.
Do you always have 'weirdos' sitting behind you?? LOL But very nice overall – not a waste of funds at all.
Merci pour la vidéo
Boa tarde muito lindo trem gostei 🎉 1:13 railjet
Filming this one must have been an ordeal, thank you for your service. 😂😘
The OG was great, this is even better! 😊
First impressions, looking good, nice work thibault

Austrian railways keep getting better!
I see no improvements from the redesign. The first-class seats are significantly worse. I don't understand why a commuter seat (Borcad Flexio) is now supposed to be better than the Grammer ICE3000 seat that was previously installed in first class. On the plus side, at least the business-class seats remain the same.
What's really bad is that the RJ1 is now also supposed to get the scratched windows. The unobstructed view of the Alps will then be gone.
the black and white displays looking very good…
Welcome changes are the 2 additional USB-C ports for every 2 seats and the fact that the seatbacks are now connected for more privacy.
I also like the red way more than the dull gray.
It is very disappointing that they chose cheap seats from Flixtrain, and did not expand carpets into second class. It seems that ÖBB is taking their passengers for granted, instead of offering them the comfort of good seats regardless of how much they can pay.
Love the red, black and gray livery.
good to see they didn't do too much damage to the business compartment
Looks very good. Thank you. The seats look more ergonomic. I took one of the newer Railjets from Munich to Verona last year and while the train and staff were VERY nice, the seats in 1st class were not ergonomic at all. They were large and spacious but my back started aching after the first hour. This looks like an improvement.
A couple of weeks ago I rode on a train from Senica in Slovakia to Wien HBF and back and I have to say the Slovak Trains were much nicer than the ÖBB Trains I was on. Hopefully some of these end up on the Vienna to Bratslava route.
Nice to see you back in the passenger's seat with all you do now.
Great way this was refurbished! Thanks for showing us!

Great video, overall for a refurbished train, this is huge improvement.
Wasn't aware that 1st generation Viaggios had cab cars (since 2nd generation aren't approved yet, I assumed they were first to have them).
I like the refreshed interiors. It's too bad the restaurant was closed. I wanted to see how it looked like.
From a "Railjet" branding point of view, I would have expected the refresh of First Class on Viaggios 1 to have the exact same seats as those on 1st class on Viaggios 2. Having different physical products advertised as Railjet First Class is not good. And a first class seat that doesn't recline shouldn't be designated "first" class. I get that they want to have a "fixed wall" behind so the minimal seat adjustment won't inconvenience the person behind, but with sufficient seat pitch, a real recline wouldn't incomodate passengers behind in first class.
So the seats in economy were actuually totally replaced or just re-upholstered with new cushions, fabric and fittings? (tablet, panels etc? )
In Canada, when they rebuilt 10 of the then 100 car LRC fleet built in early 1980s (rebuild circa 2010, so 30 year old cars), the seats look brand new, but are in fact the same seat structure form the 1980s but totally new cushions, fabric, tables, plastics around them. And they are in fact more comfortable than the original LRC seats and far more comfortable that the "european" seats used on the heavy steel Venture cars that VIA has purchased (which don't recline). The rebuilt LRC coaches have the "pocodot" livery for seat fabric.
Le Raijet 2 me fait penser au TGV 2N2 3UH (TGV l'Océane) avec un intérieur quasi similaire.
The chaaaaance
I miss the red seats in the bistro.
I was about to say, "Finally some large folding tables in 2nd class that you don't have to extend", but now they've done that in 1st class 😂
Great review. A quick request, as a cycle tourist, its always handy to see what the bike storage area is like as they vary so much (from super easy to “nightmare, avoid if possible”)
Excelent review on an updated set, Simon.
I am looking forward to ride it.
Did they steal from the Chinese?
Great review !!! This is what Via Rail should have bought :):):)
Super nice. If only we could adapt to rail travel here in America! Is Business Class
“above/higher than” First Class? The Business Class seats look better than First Class.
👍
Great video 😊 Even though Austria doesn't have high-speed trains like we do in France, I love classic Austrian trains, their beautiful red color and their simplicity which makes them so welcoming.
Is there no flat floor for people with reduced mobility?
For me, OBB is the best European service – comfort, style and onboard experience cast a long shade over the others. DB and LNER could learn a thing or 2 hundred from OBB.
Defenetly much better looking, more spacious and clean. A glimpse to the near future
I'd prefer the original Railjet for Second Class.
