8 day guided tour with Saiga. Constant security detail with us, couldn’t even roam independently at the ruins. Watched some of a rehearsal for the National Museum grand opening at the Red Castle in Tripoli, but just missed being able to visit the museum ourselves. No other tourists in sight anywhere. Saw Sabratha, Leptis Magna, and from Tripoli to Ghadames, nowhere to the East.

  1. Wow! That looks incredible

How was the safety and security? Did you feel the constant armed detail was necessary?

How was it getting a visa?

I’ve never heard of Saiga, how are they as a company to travel with?

  2. If anyone is particularly interested in the granaries there are similar structures in southern Tunisia and it’s a bit easier to visit, you can just fly in and rent a car.

The Star Wars one is being converted into a hotel so it’s lost a lot of original charm, but is an unusual place to stay: https://maps.app.goo.gl/kwFEjkS7a111DN2E7

I visited https://maps.app.goo.gl/G2eYJ9XbahPkXHKr7 which is mostly empty but has a gift shop. There are also a few on tops of hills, like https://maps.app.goo.gl/DzPd6hKq42YjAnWn6

In general you can just punch Ksar into google maps and make a big road trip out of it.

  3. Would it be correct to say that Ghadames is the furthest south you visited?

    How was the food?

Great pics, thank you for sharing.
