Welcome! 👋 Today, we are stepping into Riquewihr, that fairytale village in the Alsace region of France. 🇫🇷 This place is like an open-air museum… Most of the houses you see here date back to the 16th century and remain untouched. Riquewihr was lucky enough to survive WWII without any damage. That’s why history is still so alive here. Notice these colorful “half-timbered” houses (Colombages). In the Middle Ages, this technique was used for earthquake resistance. 🪵 Although the town’s roots go back to the Roman era, the actual fortifications and urbanization began in 1291. In the past, these colors symbolized the owner’s profession or religion. Now, they are just part of this visual feast. 🎨 This place is also known as the “Pearl of the Alsace Vineyards.” It is world-famous, especially for its Riesling wines. 🍇🥂 Feels like walking on a movie set, doesn’t it? This is one of the places that inspired the village in “Beauty and the Beast.” 🌹🎬 Having remained under the rule of the Dukes of Württemberg for centuries, it bears traces of both French and German culture. Walking on these cobblestone streets, it’s impossible not to imagine the sound of horse-drawn carriages passing through back then. 🐎 To the right and left of the main street (Rue du Général-de-Gaulle), there are hidden courtyards; each one is a world of its own. It is beautiful all year round, but at Christmas, this place takes on a completely different identity, as you will see shortly. ❄️ It’s starting to get crowded. People from all over the world come here to breathe in this medieval atmosphere. 🌍 That large tower you see ahead is the “Dolder Tower.” It was built in 1291 to protect the western entrance of the city. 🏰 Standing 25 meters tall, this tower served both defensive purposes and as the home of the town watchman. The way the houses lean against each other isn’t just architecture; it feels like a symbol of the solidarity culture of the past. 🤝 The weather is slowly changing; we are approaching that magical time frame. ✨ Riquewihr is so well-preserved that it always keeps its place on the list of “The Most Beautiful Villages of France.” 🏅 The lights have started to turn on, and the romantic face of the city is emerging… 🌇 It feels like time has stood still… Far from the hustle of modern life, we are taking a peaceful walk. 🍃 Now we are heading downhill. Notice the color of the sky; this blue creates a wonderful contrast with the buildings. 💙 As it gets darker, the shop windows light up the path. The atmosphere has suddenly taken on a more mysterious vibe. And here is the moment we’ve been waiting for… We are entering the Riquewihr Christmas Market! A sparkling world welcomes us. 🎄🎁 Those lovely scents reaching us are coming from the mulled wine (Vin Chaud) and freshly baked gingerbread. 🍷🍪 Christmas markets in the Alsace region are a deep-rooted tradition dating back to the 16th century.
