Why Are There Chequered Walls Everywhere in This North Yorkshire Town?
While walking through the streets, I kept noticing the same unusual pattern appearing again and again. At first it seemed like a coincidence β but the more you look, the more deliberate it feels.
In this video, I explore the chequered walls scattered across a North Yorkshire town, looking at their possible origins, historical influences, and whether thereβs a deeper meaning behind the design. Is it tradition, symbolism, practicality, or something else entirely?
This isnβt a conspiracy β just a closer look at a strange and fascinating architectural detail hiding in plain sight.

Chequered walls spotted throughout the town
Possible historical and architectural explanations
Why this pattern stands out in North Yorkshire
Coincidence or deliberate design?

Looks at nice place lass. Never been
Actually never even heard of the place if I'm honest π€£
Hello haley it's Tony and Wendy here. We were in north Yorkshire yesterday and done the roseberry topping hill climb. Really enjoyed it. It would be a great thing for you to vlog. It's only a 30 minute or 45 minute walk up to the top. You would enjoy it i promise!! X
Your face when that kid mentioned dje and veitch ha ha ha ha π π π could not change the subject quick enough
Nice place i recommended Harrogate beautiful place if you get chance to go
That hype button is on some of your videos but not all its on this one so i have pressed it
On a sunny day, the view from the castle down over the river is hard to beat in the UK. I live near (ish) & from there past Harrogate, Otley, Ilkley to Skipton is a great area to live. π
Cheers for exploring a bit of Knaresborough…. not sure I've been, or maybe years ago and forgotten. Some places are best seen in the sunshine, but at least you go anyway. Theres a hype button on this one….so hyped just for you because your channel deserves the recognition β€ Thanks for 11 months of straight talking…telling as it is…honest and sincere approach…all said with wry Barnsley humour, which is definitely your signature. Sending love and best wishes from a Durham lass in North Yorkshire ….Merry Christmas Hayley ππππ
Hi Hayley – Thanks For Your Video Its been A Great Tour Around – We Have Been Here On Our Travels It Was In The Summer Sometime – I Would Love To Go Back Its Beautiful – So Thanks Again – Hayley
Hey up our Hayley πso Knaresbourgh is apparently a medieval town with a lot of Normans about, all very lardy dar ππππ
There's a lot of black and white around Newcastle but that's to do with football β½ maybe in Knaresbourgh it's a Norman thing π€·
Your squeaky hip needs oiling…
Hayley I do know that Askrigg is a beautiful town I visited a few years ago after watching the original series of all creatures great and small 1970s/80s the original cast were really hands on with animals unlike the new version π
Very posh place Hayley. Knaresbro women probably pack clusters of grapes π in their husband's sandwich boxes.
Chequerboard design: good/evil, ignorance/wisdom, etc. also sign of Freemasons.. and the floor design in King Solomon's temple..
Thanks
Harrogate is bosh posh
Keep it up haley well in
Just wanted to say a big thanks for all your efforts and videos and looking forward to following your adventures next year our Hayley πππΊπ
