Hello!

New-ish to hiking and I have a question regarding ankle pain and hiking boots. I'm looking for hiking boots that work in the snowy Colorado mountains, but every hiking boot I try on seems to hurt my ankle (just my right ankle not the left!). It's a sharp pain around the Lateral Malleolus. Not a rubbing pan, but it just hurts. Almost like a bruised type feeling.

So now I've been on the hunt for a pair of hiking boots that don't hurt my ankle and work for winter. I've bought three pairs from REI and returned them. After getting home and going for a walk they hurt in the exact same spot. I also owned a pair of Merrells I haven't worn in years that also now hurt! When I was at REI I tried on several, and they all seem to hurt in the same spot.

Boots I Bought and Returned:
Renegade Evo GTX Mid Hiking Boots
Hightrail Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots
Shelter Waterproof Boots

I'm not really to sure what to do! Should I keep trying boots, or just go with a warm pair of hiking shoes and some gaiters? I've read a few other Reddit posts, like this one, but never came up with a solid answer. I've tried not tying the top lace. I've tried thick socks, and thin socks. I don't think it's just "breaking in pain", but maybe it is? Is it normal for breaking in to really hurt? Maybe my ankle is injured and I just don't know it. I can walk fine, just not in any hiking boots.

Sorry for the rambling! But I'm curious to know people's thoughts – Thank you!
