Kotor is one of the most talked-about stops in Montenegro, and for good reason. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the best-preserved medieval centers in Europe, set between dramatic mountains and the Bay of Kotor. In this video, we spend two days in Kotor exploring what it’s really like, covering the city’s main sights, the famous fortress hike, and a popular day trip to Perast.

We explore Kotor Old Town on foot, walking through its narrow cobblestone streets, stone archways, historic squares, and centuries-old buildings shaped by Venetian rule. Highlights include the Sea Gate, North Gate, St. Nicholas Church, St. Tryphon Cathedral, and sections of Kotor’s city walls, which stretch for several kilometers and date back over a thousand years. Along the way, we also visit places like Cat Park and the Cat Museum, learning why Kotor is often called the “City of Cats.”

One major focus is the hike up to Kotor Fortress, also known as St. John’s Fortress. We take the trail with over 1,300 steps, passing the Church of Our Lady of Remedy and reaching the summit for panoramic views over the Old Town, the bay, and the cruise port below. We also talk about the Ladder of Kotor, a lesser-known route many travelers ask about.

With Old Town mostly covered in one day, we use our second day to visit Perast, a small coastal town about 30 minutes away. Perast feels calmer and less crowded, with historic palaces along the waterfront and views across the bay. While there, we walk through the town, visit St. Nicholas Church, and take a boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks, one of the Adriatic’s only man-made islands.

We also share practical details throughout, including dining in Kotor at places like The Square Pub and Pizzeria Pronto, staying in Old Town, and taking the Blue Line bus between Kotor and Perast.
