We’re Helen and Andy, and we’re so glad you’ve joined us for this latest leg of our journey. As retirees enjoying life in our campervan, we are currently embarking on a brand-new series: a “Grand Loop” around France. Our adventure started in the beautiful Saint-Benoît and is taking us south through the Dordogne, across to the fairy-tale villages of Alsace, and eventually north through the Somme.

In this episode, we’ve arrived in the heart of the Périgord Noir at Les Eyzies. This village is famous worldwide for its dramatic limestone cliffs and prehistoric heritage. We decided to head out on foot to explore the “Gorge d’Enfer”—or Hell’s Gorge. Despite the intimidating name, it’s a stunningly beautiful walk that takes you past ancient rock shelters and through lush, quiet woodland.

The sheer scale of the overhanging cliffs in Les Eyzies is something you have to see to believe. Walking these trails is the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere of an area that has been inhabited for tens of thousands of years. It’s a peaceful, green, and deeply historic part of our French road trip that we absolutely loved exploring.
