We have this Coleman grill – is cast aluminum safe to use on it?

I also saw in a post somewhere on here someone used a cast iron on a similar grille and it melted the aluminum grates? Is that possible?

Trying to find the est griddle option – we bought a lodge 17×12 but thought cast iron would be better because it’s lighter.

I’d love your thoughts and suggestions!

The grates are made of steel, im sure it was the chrome coating on them that burned off. Older models likley use carbon steel instead of stainless.

  2. From what others are saying, it seems the cast iron would be fine, and regarding the grills melting, you will likely be pretty close to it when cooking and can always take it off the heat for a bit. Plus, at steel melting heats, your food would probably be pretty dang cooked, so it would be a good time to turn it off !! xD

  3. Aluminium melts at 660.3 °C and propane burns at 1,982 °C, while the grill on a propane stove won’t be that hot , maybe 450 °C, which means your aluminium grates should be fine.

I use my Dutch oven on it all the time and haven’t had any issues, and I run it for 15+ minutes at a time. I’ve used a griddle on it once, no issues, but I just prefer my Dutch oven.
