60 seconds of Portugal. The country stuck on the edge of Europe that quietly became one of the best value destinations on the continent and is now trying to pretend it wasn’t.

Lisbon’s trams rattling up hills that shouldn’t have trams on them. Alfama’s tiled facades catching the light in that specific Portuguese way that doesn’t translate to photos. Porto with its port wine cellars on the Douro and the Dom Luís I Bridge doing double duty as transport and landmark. The Algarve’s cliffs and coves where the water is that shade of turquoise that looks doctored. Sintra where Pena Palace sits on a hill painted in colours that shouldn’t work but absolutely do. Madeira doing its “Hawaii of Europe” thing with levadas and cliffs dropping into the Atlantic. The Azores out in the middle of the ocean looking like someone dropped Iceland somewhere warmer. And pastéis de nata so good that every other custard tart you’ll ever eat is just a disappointing reminder.

Portugal’s prices have crept up. It’s still better value than almost anywhere else in Western Europe. Go before it catches up completely.
