OSLO to STOCKHOLM by Train… Is It Really Worth It?

Today I’m traveling from Oslo to Stockholm by train on board an SJ Intercity service in First Class, covering a distance of 566 km by rail… despite the two capitals being only 386 km apart as the crow flies.

This 6-hour journey connects Norway and Sweden through forests, lakes and quiet towns, crossing the border almost unnoticed before continuing deeper into the Scandinavian landscape and finally reaching Stockholm Central Station via one of the most beautiful railway approaches in Europe.

But with flying taking just around 1 hour, and driving around 6 and a half… does this train actually make sense?

Join me on this trip as we explore the onboard experience, First Class comfort, scenery, and whether this train is really worth it.

    1. Love it. I was looking for more current information about this line for an upcoming trip and this was the perfect report on it. After having seen some other reports on your channel, it might be time to subscribe!

I’ve experienced other Norwegian and Swedish (classic) 1st class wagons and indeed they are so cozy and homely/inviting. The ambiance and heat radiating sides are the best! Not to mention the absolute beauty that is Scandinavia❤

    2. The line is ridiculously antiquated, not befitting a modern link between two capitals. Most of it is need of upgrades, parts of it need to be completely rerouted and shortened. I find it strange that neither country – non of which non is particularly short of resources or know-how – hasn't done something about it. The ridership would most likely increase significantly should it be upgraded to modern standards and expectations. It would also make it possible to increase freight volume. The latter is particularly important as the current network struggles with severe capacity problems.

    3. This was such a beautiful journey, I love snow, so this was one of my favourites, I can’t wait for next Friday, when the final Balkan Video releases 😊😊🎉🎉

    4. 4:08 This is actually false. SJ runs 5 weekday round trips, where the less prestigious SJ 3000 runs morning, noon and evening departures in each direction, while two SJ Intercity departures per direction fill in the gaps between those.

Also, as far as I’ve seen, a decent number of people actually travel the full way through. The most popular departures are the SJ 3000 ones, which are better timed.

    5. Did this route with the same IC 1kl (and back by X3000), it was a loyalty program trip so good deal to visit Oslo for a one night weekend. Leave early morning and come back Sunday evening. A few naps, coffee and good views actually made the journey very enjoyable! But also… we had a 1h delay,
Then of course, by plane there is the whole going to/from airports and waiting times.

About upgrading the line, there is "Oslo-Sthlm 2.55" which is some public stakeholder project with such goal of shortening travel times.

In general I like to take these older Lok+Vagn trains, they are cozy, have a nice bistro and with the loyalty program that is complementary!
