Torremolinos lies on the Costa del Sol, along the western edge of Málaga’s bay, with the Sierra de Mijas rising behind it. The town sits about 49 meters above sea level and is roughly 13 kilometers from Málaga city center, the provincial capital.
Back in the 1950s, it was just a quiet fishing village. However, it quickly grew into one of Spain’s leading sun-and-beach tourist destinations—becoming the first major hotspot of its kind in Andalucía and along the Costa del Sol. During the 1960s and 1970s, an influx of international visitors, including intellectuals, artists, bohemians, aristocrats, and celebrities, helped shape a relaxed, open-minded, and cosmopolitan vibe that set it apart from other nearby resorts.
Today, Torremolinos is especially known for its lively nightlife. It is also widely recognized as an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, with a welcoming and uninhibited atmosphere.
