Renting a Car in France? What U.S. Travelers Need to Know First
Renting a car in France is often one of the smartest decisions you can make when planning your trip, but only if you approach it correctly. In this video, I break down exactly what U.S. travelers need to know before booking a rental car in France, from timing and availability to where it actually makes sense to drive.
If you’re planning a France itinerary beyond Paris, whether that’s Provence, Bordeaux, Dordogne, or the French countryside, understanding when and where to rent a car can completely change the flow of your trip. Many travelers assume they need a car for the entire journey, but in reality, the strategy is far more nuanced.
We cover the most common mistakes travelers make when renting a car in France, including:
– Why rental offices may be closed when you arrive (and how to avoid it)
– The reality of manual vs. automatic cars in France
– When a car is essential and when it’s unnecessary
– What to expect when driving in French villages and smaller regions
– How to structure your trip so the car works for you, not against you
You’ll also get practical insights on navigating toll roads, parking, market-day traffic, and why tools like Waze can make driving in France significantly easier.
This isn’t about whether you should rent a car in France – it’s about making sure you do it in a way that supports your itinerary, your pace, and your overall experience.
If you’re still planning your route through France, I recommend continuing with my episode on why structuring a France trip like Italy often leads to logistical issues – it will help you think about your trip more strategically from the start: Planning France Like Italy? That’s Why Trips Go Wrong

Fabulous, what’s your biggest hesitation about renting a car in France?
I’m in France now. It’s my first time here. I’m driving from Annecy to Cassis with stops in Provence. My mistake was agreeing to an upgrade. I was booked for a compact car. When I picked up the car I was offered an upgrade, it sounded good so I took it. They gave me an SUV. It’s a nice car and it’s not as big as some of the SUV’s I see in America, but the roads can be narrow. Also, the parking with a small car would be easier. It’s ok, but now I know what I’d prefer. Thank you got the video. Im looking forward to the rest of my trip.
