Der Flugplatz Kiel-Holtenau liegt im Norden der Stadt direkt am Nord-Ostsee-Kanal und ist einer der ältesten Flugplätze Deutschlands. Seine Ursprünge reichen bis in die Zeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg zurück, als das Gelände zunächst militärisch genutzt wurde und eng mit der Entwicklung der Marinefliegerei verbunden war. Im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts wandelte sich der Flugplatz zunehmend zu einem zivilen Standort, blieb jedoch stets von seiner Lage zwischen Wasserflächen und militärischen Einrichtungen geprägt. Heute dient der Flugplatz vor allem dem regionalen Luftverkehr, Geschäftsflügen sowie dem privaten Flugbetrieb. Linienverbindungen spielen nur eine untergeordnete Rolle, dennoch ist der Platz ein wichtiger Bestandteil der regionalen Infrastruktur. Charakteristisch ist die kompakte Start- und Landebahn, die parallel zum Kanal verläuft und dem Flugplatz eine besondere Lage verleiht. Von hier aus ergeben sich ungewöhnliche Perspektiven auf vorbeifahrende Schiffe und die Schleusenanlagen in Holtenau. Das kleine Terminalgebäude sowie angrenzende Hangars spiegeln die überschaubare Größe des Standorts wider. Gleichzeitig wird das Gelände auch für Luftsport, Ausbildung und technische Dienstleistungen genutzt. Die Nähe zu den Stadtteilen Wik und Holtenau sowie die gute Erreichbarkeit über die B503 machen den Flugplatz leicht zugänglich. Diskussionen über die zukünftige Nutzung des Areals, etwa im Hinblick auf Stadtentwicklung oder alternative Verkehrsformen, begleiten den Standort seit Jahren. Insgesamt verbindet der Flugplatz Kiel-Holtenau historische Bedeutung, funktionale Nutzung und eine ungewöhnliche Lage zwischen Stadt, Kanal und Förde.
Kiel-Holtenau Airport is located in the northern part of the city directly beside the Kiel Canal and is one of the oldest airfields in Germany. Its origins date back to the period before the First World War, when the site was initially used for military purposes and closely linked to the development of naval aviation. Over the course of the 20th century, the airfield gradually transitioned into a civilian facility, although its surroundings—marked by waterways and nearby military areas—continue to reflect its historical background. Today, the airport primarily serves regional aviation, business flights, and private air traffic. Scheduled commercial flights play only a minor role, yet the airfield remains an important part of the region’s transport infrastructure. A defining feature is its relatively short runway, which runs parallel to the canal and creates a unique setting. From the airfield, there are unusual views of passing ships and the lock systems at Holtenau. The small terminal building and adjacent hangars reflect the modest scale of operations. In addition to air traffic, the site is used for flight training, recreational aviation, and technical services. Its proximity to the districts of Wik and Holtenau, along with easy access via the B503 road, makes it well connected. Ongoing discussions about the future of the area, including potential redevelopment or alternative uses, continue to shape its role. Overall, Kiel-Holtenau Airport combines historical significance, practical function, and a distinctive location between city, canal, and fjord.
