Cologne Cathedral is the world’s largest twin spire cathedral.

Built from 1248 to 1880 but with a long break between approx. 1530 to 1842 due to a lack of funds and a waning interest in the gothic style.

From 1842 on the Prussian kings spent money to complete the cathedral so it could become a perfect symbol of the new German nation. In 1871 the German Empire (“Deutsches Kaiserreich”) was founded then as the first German nation. Until then, present-day Germany was a patchwork of small provinces and kingdoms.
