Nerja lies on the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga, around 50 kilometres from Málaga city and less than a 90-minute drive from Granada and the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

Protected by the striking Sierra Almijara mountain range, this former fishing village has grown into one of the coast’s most sought-after tourist destinations, home to more than 12,000 residents. Despite its popularity, Nerja has avoided excessive urban development and large high-rise buildings, preserving its character as a picturesque seaside town that appeals to travelers seeking a more refined and authentic holiday experience. For this reason, it is often called the “Jewel of the Costa del Sol.”

Among the town’s standout landmarks is the Balcón de Europa, a stunning promenade built along the top of a dramatic cliff where a Moorish castle once stood. From here, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline framed by surrounding mountains.

Nerja’s rich Andalusian heritage, pleasant year-round climate, and cosmopolitan atmosphere have made it one of the Costa del Sol’s most appealing holiday destinations. The town’s old quarter has retained much of its original charm, with narrow winding streets, whitewashed homes, and wrought-iron balconies adorned with colorful geraniums, often accompanied by the sound of singing canaries.

The town also offers a wide variety of cafés and restaurants, along with charming plazas where visitors can relax and soak up the local atmosphere. Tapas culture remains an essential part of daily life in Nerja, and many bars still serve complimentary tapas with drinks. Local specialties include De La Doncella, a traditional red mullet dish, and Pescaito Frito, a classic platter of fried fish. Alongside authentic Spanish cuisine, the town features an impressive range of international dining options, ensuring there is something for every taste.
