Beyond Bastei Bridge: A Calm Saxon Switzerland Hike near Schmilka Germany

Ep.13 :Saxon Switzerland hike near Schmilka, beyond Bastei Bridge — a quiet trail with sandstone rocks, forest sounds, big views, almost no crowds, and 14.3+ km of real hiking in Germany.

Bastei Bridge is incredible, but Saxon Switzerland is much more than one famous viewpoint. This time we wanted the quieter side of Sächsische Schweiz: a calm hiking route near Schmilka, close to the Czech border, with forest paths, sandstone cliffs, peaceful viewpoints, and almost no tourists around.

In this long calm hiking vlog, we start in Schmilka, see the ferry between Germany and Czechia, find a small food vending machine before the trail, look at a huge long-distance hiking route, and then begin our own “short hike” through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

    You will see:
    – a quiet Saxon Switzerland hike near Schmilka
    – sandstone rocks and viewpoints beyond Bastei Bridge
    – real forest sounds, footsteps, birds, and calm trail moments
    – a waterfall detour that did not go exactly as planned
    – 14.3+ km / 8.9+ mi tracked before our Apple Watch gave up
    – a peaceful hiking experience without the Bastei crowds

This is not a fast travel guide. It is a slower hiking vlog from Germany — more walking, less rushing, real trail sounds, family moments, tired legs, and the quiet beauty of Saxon Switzerland beyond the famous Bastei Bridge.

Would you continue to the waterfall, or turn back and save your energy for the main trail?

    1. We turned back from the waterfall because we still had to finish the main trail before it got too late 😅
Would you call that giving up — or a smart hiking decision?
Also… would you choose the famous Bastei Bridge crowds, or a quiet trail like this one?

    2. This is a very beautiful area in Germany. But like many other places, we haven't been there. We have agreed among ourselves that if one day we can't travel as far as we used to, we will visit all these places.

    3. A very peaceful hike where rock formations and natural scenery create a strong yet calm atmosphere. The Saxon Switzerland region always offers a deep sense of immersion in nature.
