Congratulations—a very well-executed introduction to the subject of "Croatia for Tourists." However, I would like to make one observation regarding the history. It was not the Austrians and Hungarians who liberated Croatia from the threat posed by the Ottoman Empire. Quite the opposite was true—as is documented even by those Austrian historians who do not view history through a purely nationalistic lens. For centuries, we Croats served as Europe’s bulwark against Islam and against the Ottoman Empire’s ambition to advance further into Europe.
We—the Croatian soldiers of the Military Frontier—served for centuries as the Antemurale Christianitatis for Europe. The Hungarians—who today like to portray themselves as the defenders of Europe—actually fought on behalf of the Ottoman Empire for extended periods. They were its vassals.
On January 1, 1530, my ancestors in Topusko elected a Habsburg as their king. Elected, mind you—for they were acutely aware of the fact that we needed Europe, that we needed the Holy Roman Empire, in order to withstand Islam and the Ottoman Empire. Thus, while the Habsburgs ruled over vast parts of Europe "by the Grace of God," each of them was required to be elected King of Croatia by the Croatian *Sabor*.
It was Croatian counts and princes—and their armies—who defended not only Croatia, but also Hungarian cities, fortresses, and lands against the Ottoman Empire, while the Hungarians themselves were colluding with the Ottomans. Out of cowardice and complacency. So please—do not lecture me, a descendant of the Croatian Military Frontiersmen, on the history of my country or my ancestors.
