We’ve Been Robbed Again in Southeast Asia

We’ve been travelling through Thailand and Vietnam and just discovered that a large amount of our cash has been switched out for fake notes—we still have no idea when or where it happened.

The counterfeit notes looked incredibly convincing, and because we always kept our money locked away and secure, we never suspected anything was wrong until now. The hardest part is that it could have happened at any point during the past two months while travelling.

This experience is frustrating, stressful, and honestly pretty shocking—we also wanted to document it in the hope that it helps other travellers stay aware and avoid a similar situation.

If you travel internationally carrying cash, this is definitely something to be aware of.

    1. Just watched this and could cry. I watch all your vids and was upset at the one with the motorhome robbing but this is even worse. Don’t give up. Sleep on it. I am also someone who sees good in everyone and it really knocks you when people let you down. As Emily said – it isn’t you. Hopefully karma will get them ❤

    2. Oh man, so sorry to hear this. you guys are so deserving of some good luck for once. So you have no idea at all when it was switched?

    3. Oh this is horrible, perhaps you can call each hotel and let them know that you don’t know if it’s there hotel , but this has happened to you guys etc etc . Maybe it’s a well known scam, sending good vibes 🙏🏽

    4. Vietnam and Cambodia are NOTORIOUS for money switching!
Massage shops fully unsafe especially CAMBODIA!, It is obvious since most all riverfront shops CANNOT MASSAGE at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hotel Safe is not ever safe for more than a Passport
Foods? RISKY unless at a resort

    5. anyone who has been to a saigon district one money change shop which is usually a jewelry shop notices Vietnamese grannies constantly exchanging hundreds to thousands of dollars for dong

    6. wow. ruthless. i always carry my cash. too risky otherwise. hotel safes are anything but "safe". what happens is these are coordinated hits. the hotel staff operate together. one monitors the camera system or main entry to get the all clear when you leave the room and building. they use their walkie talkies or phones to message each other to swarm in and do the hit quickly. this is a coordinated hit – make no mistake about it. i almost admire their professionalism with respect to criminal activity.
