Carcassonne vs Perpignan vs Narbonne: Which Train Trip Is Worth It?
We left Béziers with two bags and three cities on the list: Carcassonne, Perpignan, and Narbonne. One train loop, two overnight stays, and $403 out of pocket for two people, or $672 if you count the hotel points at cash value. New to our story? What’s Inside This Episode
Carcassonne delivered exactly what it promised — medieval walls, dramatic towers, and a cassoulet dinner inside the city at night after the day-trippers left. It’s the most famous stop on this loop for a reason, and it earns it. It also costs more, draws bigger crowds, and doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a tourist destination.
Perpignan was the one we didn’t see coming. Catalan street signs, palm trees, pink marble, and a border city energy that felt nothing like southern France. Dinner for two came to $51. The city left us wanting to go back.
Narbonne was fifteen minutes from our front door and required almost no planning. Flat, walkable, and home to one of the best indoor markets we’ve visited. We dropped our bags at a tabac near the station using the Bounce app, spent the day on foot, and were back in Béziers by evening.
We used Chase Sapphire points for both hotels, keeping our actual out-of-pocket costs for two nights of accommodation to $11.20.
By the end of the loop, each city gave a different answer and only one of them is the one we’d send you to first.

We saw three completely different versions of a visit, but that’s not the same as living somewhere.

What makes a place worth staying longer for you?
Collioure, a coastal town , just outside of Perpignan is one of the most beautiful little sea towns I’ve been to in SW France .
We usually stay in Collioure for the winter from Canada – we love it there. So Perpignan is our closest (bigger) city and it is great. We don’t mind taking visitor to see Carcassonne, but you’re right on about being very touristique. I think finding the right place for you will of course be different for everyone. But it is great they you are showing people and providing your comments too. Well done 👍🏻

Great video.
I’ve not been to Perpignan, but I’ve heard from multiple people that it can be sketchy.
Thanks for this interesting video! I want to go to all three!
so dum….so touristic ? do they have the right to maké some money ? they dont know but france is kind of old and new e mixing eras expert
so maybe Spain would be a great country for you
There is NO Spanish influence in Perpignan.
Perpignan and this region of France is part of the historic region of Catalonia which was shared between Spain and France by the treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
So it is more a Catalan city with a (strong) French influence.
Both sides of this part of the border population feel being first Catalan before being French or Spanish.
It's the same in the Basque region also shared between France and Spain.
Carcassonne fortified old city is not really a preserved medieval architecture.
It was really close to a ruin in the 19th century having been used as a stone quarry during centuries before being restored by famous architect Viollet-le-Duc (of Paris Notre Dame fame) during decades.
So it is more an idealized middle-age seen from romantic 19th century eyes but it is still very impressive and well worth the visit.
