    The World’s MOST Famous Hanging Railway

    We came to Wuppertal, Germany for one thing: to ride their world famous hanging railway!

    Admittedly, this was a city we’d barely heard of before discovering its incredible suspension railway or Schwebebahn. Built in 1901, this engineering marvel has been carrying passengers above the Wupper River for more than a century, and we were lucky enough to visit during its 125th anniversary celebration.

    But we quickly realized Wuppertal is much more than its famous railway. We uncovered the unbelievable true story of Tuffi the elephant (yes, an elephant really did fall from the railway into the river), learned about Friedrich Engels and his connection to one of history’s most influential political works, sampled the region’s famous Bergische waffles, climbed through the city’s endless staircases, enjoyed a tasty schnitzel and German beer, and found one of the best panoramic views overlooking the Wupper Valley.

    By the end of the day, we couldn’t help but wonder why more people don’t visit this fascinating city. Sometimes the places you’ve never considered become the ones you remember most.

    And we ended the evening with a rock concert in a neighboring city!

      When people say that you probably don't know where a place is, I always wonder why I know that place. Turns out that I remember the elephant. I had completely forgotten that whole train…😂😂

      Not a single cat. I guess Germans are not so big on cats? They like dogs better? Not sure. Wuppertal looks pretty, like so many German cities. Clean, quiet, nice architecture, very friendly people. And then there's the schnitzels and beer. Very nice video, perfect for a lazy sunday afternoon.

      An interesting video AGAIN, we are definetly going to visist Wuppertal too 🙂
      Tip as an alternative for a botanical garden (which is mostly inside), try an Arboretum! It's a garden specially about trees (arborteum = tree in Latin).
      In the Netherlands the best known are: Arboretum Trompenburg in Rotterdam, Nationaal Bomenmuseum Gimborn in Doorn en Pinetum Blijdenstein in Hilversum.
      But there are others too (Google is your friend). 🙂

      That’s funny, because I had planned to go there this weekend to visit as I live on the east side of the Netherlands (I know you weren’t there this weekend), but unfortunately, my car broke down so that will be for another time, but I didn’t even know about the railway anniversary, and I didn’t know about the waffles, now I’m even more convinced because food is life 😂

      The strange tree that you loved so much is called a monkey puzzle tree or Slangeden in Dutch.I have a 3 meter one in my backyard…😎 😇

      What a nice place! Love it when you two explore the lesser-known/toured cities in Europe! The suspended train was so interesting, except of course, for the troubling incident involving Tuffi the elephant (thank goodness she turned out to be okay, though. But I do HATE the circus)! Anyway, those waffles looked good, and like that several places there were named after Fredrich Engels. Always love when you climb any tall(ish) structures wherever you go. I might have asked before, but(t): have you ever climbed the Church of Our Saviour (aka the "Spiral Church") in Copenhagen? If not, it'd be great to see you do that someday – as well as explore the nearby community of Christiana, and get your impressions of them. So cool you got to the Def Leppard concert – they are great! Another great Sunday morning with N&K and coffee! xo

      15:12 because you ask fried and then you get fries (frieten) you should have asked baked patatoes. Americans says frying to everything you put in a pan. But in Europe/Dutch we say 3 main things: Koken (=boiling) in water like pasta, Bakken (=backing) in butter in a pan like a steak or sausage and Frituren (=frying) as said for fries or fried snacks.
